front wheel bearing replacement
Alex C replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A big hardened punch, that is if its an ea81. This is how I did mine about 4 years ago, no problems since. Just make sure you dont forget to put the dust cover back, as once its left off you might as well wait till the next time you pull it all apart. There was a way of unbolting the strut that made it very easy to pull and replace, Im not as sure being its been so long but I think it was the mounting plate bolts on the top. Alex -
What are some good times and places? What do we want to do, just talk shop? or actually drive somewhere? Who has been to china mine, there is a good place. Alex

Unfortunately I am finishing a rebuild on a tempo with a friend, he needs it going before he moves to salem. We rogue valley nuts should set up a meet though!!! PS, took my school bag out and weighed last night with myself a friend, and all the other crap I keep in my car, and the reading was 3000! Poor car, no wonder the gears whine. Alex

what is the optimum quantity of r-134a?
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, but how much total? I know its supposed to be less. I used the napa kit, and ~ one bottle of the r-134a. If you had a rough guess how many ounces did you use? -
I installed the conversion kit, went fairly well, except, how much should I put in? Its only kinda cool now and Im sorta wondering if I put too much in (higher pressure preventing proper evaporation, but just my theory). I have the 82GL.

where can I get new oil pressure unit?
Alex C replied to teasdam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
34!, wow, I think I paid 14 for mine.(at napa) Yes the teflon helps the oil from leaking through the threads. Alex -

Im in ashland, basically as far south as you can get on 1-5 and stay in OR., You should probably call them for details, or if you want I can try and call them tomorrow afternoon when I get out of class. It still has the white spoke wheels, maybe I can get a picture tomorrow. If your driving south I might ask if you want to pick up a tranny on the way from one of the other members who was willing to get rid of it. But you dont have to if you dont want to. Alex -

Too bad your not down here, there is an 82gl wagon for sale, 500 O.B.O., they say it runs great (on the sales sign). its the same shiny maroon as my car, I think the left front fender hit something, as it has the slight collision ripple and the turn signal lens is broken next to the headlight. Other than that it looks in good shape. If I had the money Id grab it. The number to buy it is 541-488-6260. I drive by it twice every day which is why i know. Alex -
Im up to 209k on my 82 ea81, no tranny work ( its an automatic) and the ND dist is still perfect. the engine has been rebuilt though. Axles only were replaced because of repair shops messing up the threads on one and the other had a torn boot for 2 years. I also bought it in 97 with 96k on it, basically brand new. Alex
-
No prob, Im new here myself. Just happened to know the answer to that question. Alex
-
thats the thing, my engine regularly gets up to 4500RPM, which equates to 75 MPH. So does taking it up past that by 1500 do that?
-
When I bought the cable I also got the one for the fresh air vent. However I did make sure to check that I was using the correct one. I also tried a bunch of variations on the alignment of the cable.

After semi fixing my AC this morning I went for a test drive and ran some errands. First thing I noticed is It idled just fine when cold, which is a first in a long time, and second ran really good. The only things I have done recently was today replacing a cable ( obviously not it) and yesterday I had the motor up to 6k RPM in second getting on the freeway (automatic so about 55 or so MPH), I also took the car up to 85 (about 5.1k RPM) for about 2 minutes. What did I do and how do I keep it running better? Alex PS, still hoping someone will know the answer to my earlier cable question.
-
AARGHHH!, I went to replace my cables today( I thought the mode control and fresh air were broken) and the mode wont work right. It was all fubared up, not only broken but the linkages were all disconnected etc. I took out the broken cable and replaced it with the new one, but no matter what I do the travel for it is now half the distance from def to acmax. What did I do wrong? Good news is the fresh air cable wasnt broken, the end was off of the lever. Anyone want to buy a fresh air cable for cheap? Worrisome thought though, I spotted a bunch of white grease pencil marks sayign things like OK or 83 and so on, Im beginning to wonder what happend to the car? Alex

what's a crank angle sensor???
Alex C replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Crank angle would be the measure of the crank with respect to the number 1 piston and its distance from TDC. Basically sets your timing and in some cases controls the ignition. -
HI, I just thought of a solution. Call the subaru parts department and see if the part number for that sticker and cover is the same as the one on your 75. Also they might even know and have documentation. Alex

Anyone in Rogue Valley have a mig torch?
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Donno, Sounds like the math works except I weighed it on the scales one day, got 3100. I dont know how accurate ODOT scales are, I was figuring they were under weighing me. -

Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have no clue why it weighs so much. You should know though I have about 100-200 lbs of tools in my trunk and the normal 50 lbs of crap in the back seat, plus I have added heavier wheels, and then of course im 220 lbs. So all that will bring me up to about 3600-3700 lbs total. Here is my Data plate http://id.mind.net/~alexc/Subaru6.jpg Its a 4 door sedan, so I have no idea why is heavier than the wagons etc? -
Anyone in Rogue Valley have a mig torch?
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Great info for the pipes, so I take it its then just a matter of cutting off the 3 adapters (two head and one exaust) and welding those to the new pipes and then welding it together in place? I think I might be able to afford this. How much would the torch usage cost from you guys? No I never got any meet or greats other than from matt and mike (But I do know those two). I cant make any trips for two reasons. I work saturdays and my tranny is on the verge of death, works around town but if you heard it youd know it wont hold up for much heavy duty stress. It has been pulling a 3200+ lb car around for 22 years and 209k miles. Alex -

I have a problem with both of my front seats, the outside rear spot where the seats bolts to the frame(of the car) is broken. I think the body needs to be built up and solidified. Also how much is it in materials to scratchbuild a new Y-pipe (1.75 tubing) minus the cat? and do I need to leave in the O2 sensor?
