Ok fast forward five or six months, I have finally torn into the XT... I got the transmission droped... now I just gotta get my car higher to get the trans from under the car.. This is my first time dealing with trans/clutch issues... Not quite sure where to go from here as far as telling what my problem is. I tried cranking on the input shaft of the trans and It only can spin about half a turn, also it seems like the linkage is locked up. The spring for the linkage was nowhere to be found either. It doesnt seem like the clutch disk broke. the clutch only had 6000 miles on it. I think I might just replace the disk itself, what do you guys think of that? Since everything else has really not had that much use, and I dont plan on keeping the car for more then a year. Summarized three questions: As far as the Trans, Should I open it up? also is the Input bearing supposed to be loose on the shaft?? I think I might just replace the disk itself, what do you guys think of that? sorry for the long post, but im a novice at drivetrain stuff. -

Yup I definitely was the one your stopped for.. HA ha small world. Yeah I waited for like two hours for a damn two truck luckily i had AAA.. Yeah Im going to probably start pulling the tranny this week sometime. gotta organize the garage first. Thanks for your replies, Ill probably have more questions soon.. -
I have an 85 xt fwd turbo.. Anyways I was driving on the free way, it started shifting a little funny.. like it was snapping into gear.. and then Boom!.. I started hear some loud rotational noises sounding like the clutch, but also the car basically wanted to slow down real quick almost like my front tires were locking up.. i pulled into nuetral and pulled off to the shoulder.. With the car running even if its in nuetral it makes a scratching sound if i let the clutch pedal out. I cant get in into any gears..(i was able to get it into 3rd at first and even go a little bit, but i could feel the clutch grabing and letting go (like it was shaking) but after ten minutes Nothing, especially 1st and 2nd gear are bascially no existant. ) The clutch was done 10k ago by aemco... I can tell the clutch is messed up as well, Im pretty sure the trannys toast.. with only 155k too... But could it just be the linkage? I think i heard a loud clank sound just before this happened and then all hell broke loose. I found some used trannys for not more then 200$.. my questions are : How hard is it to do? What else should i replace while im back there? rear seals? Flywheel grind? Has anyone ever converted a fwd to the awd or 4wd tranny? how hard would it be to get that rear diff. SOrrry Lots of questions Please Give me some Guidance as this is my only transportation besides my landscaping truck. Oh yeah and i just did THE HGS on this thing litterally a few months ago.

ITs an 85 xt turbo fwd... Anyways one of my coolant lines sprang a leak so i pulled the trubo out... I am replacing the rubber hose and all the copper washers... But before i pulled this sucker, my stock boost gauge only would either show it being at the very lowest or all the way up.. It would never stay inbetween.. SO do i have a problem with my wastegate? What do i need to do to test me wastegate? it doesnt have any wire hooked up to the turbo itself, so how does my stock gauge on my digi dash even work?

Hey PPL have had my Lovely XT turbo fwd 5 spd for about two years now.. I so far have taken care of all the vaccum issues, done a hg job with timing belts, converted the alt to the maxima one (25 more amps) and converted to two electronic fans controlled by an in dash switch.. and had the clutch replaced(but i suspect it was a botched job as i think the mechanic didnt service the flywheel or replace the rear seals!) Anyways Wondering if anyone here might have been the prevoius owner as this car was given to me for FREE FREE from my friend that joined the navy. His older sister bought from someone in the washington area prolly on the western side. Whoever had it had installed a msd coil and i think a distributor.. (my friends brother took these out before the car was given to me :-\) And had fog lights installed with the switch above the fuse box. ANY one?

85 XT Turbo coupe fwd... Repair work: Did HG job, valves services, replaced a cam, rebuilt all the lifters, did the oil pan, cam and crank seals, rebuilt oil pump, resealed water pump, new gaskets for exhaust, intake and valve cover. Fixed all the vacuum leaks. new timing belts. sparks plugs + wires + cap.. air filter, and synthetic oil. Modifications: Electric fan swap for mechanical fan, Maxima alternator swap. Future plans: gut the CATS(not the animal) get a TMIC and bypass valve, boost controller and gauge.

A quick update.... I tried getting brackets off a legacy with an ea82 with A/C and PS.. It bolts right up to my compressor and block on my 85 XT. Now I need to decide whether I should swap my old pulley on there or get a larger belt? My old pulley is 3/8-1/2 shorter in diameter (both are the 4 ribbed style which is what the rest of my pulleys have). Would the smaller style pulley damage the alternator due to the gear ratio being different? I'm worried it will make the RPMs in the alternator go too high when i am in high RPMs. Then again trying to track down a different size belt isn't going to be easy i think. Any recommendations?

Hey, so my alternator is fried and i have a 85 XT Turbo FWD. My alternator is actually a different size than ones found off of other ea82's (as I found out the hard way at the junkyard today) I pulled a Maxima alternator though and bought one, looks brand new. MY question: Can I swap out the mounting brackets from the other ea82's to make the Maxima one fit, or to be able to buy a cheaper ea82 alternator (mine costs around 200$ rebuilt) ? I also have A/C and power steering so I don't know if it will work, but I'm mainly concerned of getting her off the side of the road and driving it home. Anyways I will try this tomorrow, will let you XT owners know if it works or doesn't work - hoping the other brackets will bolt up, don't see why Subaru made two different alternators for the same engine.

EJ22ed Loyale clicking 2nd gear 1k-2.5rpm?

i have the same thing happeing on my xt, i can hear it even in neutral... im thinking the axle or the wheel berring.. -
Ok so i just replaced my hgs and almost every seal and gasket besides the piston rings and rear seals... I also replaced the timing belts. Took the car to emmisions and passed with flying colors, and the car was running great.. started going up a hill and the giving it a little gas and suddenly it died, and i heard a rotational sound. pulled over... took my cap off rotated the engine by the starter and the rotor was only wigglin g. got a ride home got my tools, and i took the belt cover off, found the belt was very loose ( loose to the point that the camshaft was not even spinning while the crank was spinning). I was able to get it back on time(within a tooth) withoutremoving anything else besides the fan and i drove it home after loosening the tensioner and tightening it. i redid both brand new belts and started the car; but the driver side belt(the one that slipped) seems to be wiggling back and forth. I checked the tensioner and idler and both seemed to be in good condition (no sound and no play), im also broke so i didnt buy new ones. Is this small amount of wiggling normal (about a 1/4 an inch) ? what could i have done wrong? I thought i had it tightened down the first time but apparently i didnt put tension on the cam sprocket while tightening, but i did it this time. I have to use the car for work (pizza delivery) so im very nervous that this will happen again. by the way its a 85 xt fwd. BTW : last year for emmissions woop woop bye bye cats..
