  1. one of the lines needs to run to full manifold vacuum, and the other to the air filter. I have the weber also, and have an "L" on the bottom of the air cleaner housing just for this purpose.
  2. I'm gonna go get some and see if it'll help my 3rd gear grind in my GL. for engine oil, I use mobil1 5-30 in my '06, and valvoline 10-30 in my '84. I use Wix filters exclusively, and in both of them I add a bottle of STP. it's real clingy, and has a lot of zinc in it. the 1.8 in the '84 (229k) doesn't tick at all, and the 2.5 in the '06 doesn't have a noticeable slap. well now that I think about it, I guess it does have it a little, if I put a load on it when it's cold out. not enough to bother me though!
  3. here's a couple that sort of qualify... one where I just kinda slipped off the road while helpin a neighbor and the other two were from a dukes of hazzard moment, ran through a ditch and was airborn 28' after launching off a culvert (no beer, but a late night deer!) this accident is what prompted me to lengthen the front strut rods, do the 6 lug conversion, and sawzall the fenders:cool: when I'm wheeling, it's pretty drama free. my adventures happen during normal commutes!
  4. you can patch stuff up with fiberglass if it's not structural. like say a fender or door skin... but the way I've seen them rust out underneath...fiberglass would be a superficial "fix"...depending on pics (hint hint:-p) a welded repair that retains (or improves) structural integrity would be the way to go
  5. really? mid 80s accord calipers will work on the rear? no mods for brake line or mounting?
  6. found this one...not a great shot of the GL, but it sure was a beautiful evening!
  7. here's a couple... one from a snowstorm in '10, and then one where I got stuck by my casa a couple weekends ago
  8. I was out horsing around in the mud and snow in my GL, and the exhaust kept getting louder and louder...got home and found the right side pipe going into the Y was cracked about 3/4 around, and it had blown out my plug where the o2 sensor used to be. took the pipes off, got out the ol' handy dandy mig welder and got it all tightened up.
  9. after the gutted catalytic, I have 2.25" pipes with a thrush turbo muffler. I don't know if it sounds good (can't compare with a rumbly v8), but I can definitely hear it!
  10. mine also had the mismatch. about 10 careful minutes with a die grinder and they were matched up real nice. as a consequence, I had to drill/tap/plug the coolant passage cuz it kept blowing through the gasket
  11. installation damage an/or crappy quality aside I hose my cv boots down with silicone spray on a fairly regular basis. it soaks in and (in my mind anyways) helps to keep them pliable
  12. I think my problems wheeling always are related to approach and departure angles. I'm always bangin the front and draggin the rump roast on something! on my baja especially. I've pretty much givin up wheelin it on rocks cuz it's gettin all boogered up. my 84GL has that problem too, but not near as bad. it's ugly anyhow, so I just use more momentum if it doesn't make it up the 1st time:burnout:
  13. That carb would make for a miserable drive. the engine won't even come close to suckin that much air. Ironically, a 600cfm 4v would make for better driveability than the 500cfm 2v (the 4v primaries being smaller than they are on the 2v = better vacuum signal) get a weber. drives great and it's sized right....er. a stock 1.8 still doesn't use all of it's potential either
  14. when the roads are bad enough to keep most sane people at home, that's my favorite time to go for a drive in my ol' 84GL. but no matter how capable the vehicle, you hafta have tires up to the task. I usually run studded snow tires, but this year I have siped BFG ATs, and they do pretty good. not great, but well enough
  15. driveability is so much better on my '84 1.8, I wish it'd been one of the 1st mods I made. I'm only getting around 23-24 mpg, but that's about what I was getting with my hitachi
  16. I have 195-75-15s on my 84, with no lift. but my Isuzu wheels stick out more (less offset) so I had to cut the front fenders about 3", and the rears about 1.5". It looks okay, and it's more stable having a wider track. sorry I don't have pics handy...
  17. yes and no...it's pretty easy to align where the holes need to be. drilling them "true" without a drill press is tricky. the real problem lies, IMO, with machining the seats for the stud heads on the backside of the hub. I attempted to do it, but the first one wasn't excatly flat, and I took out more material than I would like, from the surrounding area. if this area is not true, the integrity of both the stud, and the hub is definitely compromised. I took the easy route, and took my hubs and studs to a machinist and had them do it. the holes and the machined surfaces came out perfect. well worth the $100 to have a machine shop do it. but that's just me
  18. you lazy slacker! I um...uuuh.....let's see here, um....put on new windshield wipers!
  19. Good luck in finding another sube! my first car after I got my license was an 86 GL, and that's the one that made a subaru believer out of me. I brutalized that car like only a reckless and leadfooted teenage male can! and so now I own an 84GL, and an '06 Baja. love em both! see ya around the site:drunk:
  20. I tried hookin up the egr on mine, T'ing off the same line aas the distributor. but it just didn't run as smooth as I like. with it unhooked, it runs great. I had to have it hooked up to pass a visual, so I screwed a small bolt into the T, and then put the hose back on it. so it's plugged, but looks operational. with some main jet fine tuning, it still passed the tailpipe test ( with no cat, to boot)
  21. I definitely recommend the weber. the pieces can be found to set the hitachi for the higher altitude....but all in all the stock system will crap out on you sooner or later. not the carb itself really, but all the doodads that tie into it fail. and trackin down the quirks is a waste of time. and there's more power to be had from the weber as well
  22. I converted my hubs to 6 lug, instead of modding the 6 lug wheels to fit a 4 lug hub. that way, if I ever need a wheel I can find one anywhere and bolt it up without having to redrill it first.
  23. the back of my GL looks like a redneck warehouse:drunk: -25' tow strap -a couple clevis's -tree saver strap -come-a-long -full size studded snow spare tire -clutch cable -throttle cable -misc. metric hardware -bag 'o tools -german military folding shovel -tire chains -coolant, oil -gallon of tap water -couple cans of food -coffee can heater (folgers can, roll of TP, couple bottles of 85% pure alcohol) -spare ammo! i think that's about it
  24. oh I forgot! I also painted my Bajas grill a dark metallic grey, and removed from the tailgate, the giant SUBARU emblems, as well as the AWD emblem. looks much cleaner
