Help me pass emissions with my weber
spazomatic replied to Lachlan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my weber to pass emissions....with a gutted catalytic convertor! the testing center I went to was right around 6500 ft (castle rock, co) my carb had come from sea level, and sounds set up identical to yours. after much trial and error, it passed with 115 main jets (it runs stronger with 125s). all the other metering orifices I left alone. make sure it's got new plugs, and that the rest of it's bits and pieces are in good shape (cap, rotor, wires, good oil and air filter, etc) for the idle, turn the mixture screw in a 1/4 turn at a time until the RPMs begin to drop, then turn it back out a 1/4 to a 1/2 a turn. what carb linbkagfe are you using? if you can get it, use the "universal" style that comes with the weber adapter kit. it doesn't open the carb all the way, and prevents an idiot tech who doesn't know the right way to drive a carbureted car...from opening it up too far. Good luck! -
Got the studded Hankook 409s on my Baja, and serviced the transmission. test fitted my tire chains... On the ol 84GL, I removed the throttle linkage that came with the universal Weber adapter kit, and re-installed the stock carb linkage. it opens all the way now! test drove it through some mud...got the tire chains stashed in the back of it now too.

Meyer makes (or at least they used to make?) a model E-46 that should be relatively easy and cheap to find. it's a simple electric/hydraulic unit. they're reliable, don't weigh a lot, and wiring one up is a piece o'cake

*Colorado Roll Call*
spazomatic replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I live in the Palmer Lake area. We've had lots of subarus in our family. my first was an 86GL, and now we have our 84GL (affectionately known as Krusty) and '06 Baja. Coloardo snow is what sold me that subarus are awesome! that, and the abuse I dealt to my 1st 86 as a teenager. that thing just ran and ran and ran. -
I've had lots of rodent problems. I love livin out in the sticks, but geez this gets old! freakin rodents! after several heater plenum R&Rs, I've affixed expanded metal to the plenum intake, and that seems to help quite a bit. The old school "Victor" spring traps work great. The trick: take a Reeses peanut butter chip, and super glue it to the trigger. works way way better than just peanut butter. other than that, I use my spare time pickin off the mice and chipmunks with an old scoped bolt action Marlin .22.

The 185 x 85 - 13s. sorry I didn't specify:drunk: it wasn't until I installed my 195x75-14s that I had to cut my fenders

I had those on my stock height 84GL, and had no issues with fender clearence.

Got my 84GL through emissions with the Weber! and now I have a nice assortment of jets to handle any altitude. at 6500ft, it passed emissions with the 115 jets. anything bigger, and she failed, anything smaller, and it has a lean misfire. runs strongest with 125's. I am so glad to be done with that!

dumb question...did ya make sure the headlights themselves are okay? I had a buddy who had (unknowingly) been drivin around with one lamp burned out. then the other one failed, so he pulled his hair out tryin to find the problem. I went to help him, and found out that both headlights were burned out.

I need to post some pics of the roads I plow. 2 miles of roads, climbing 1400ft in elevation. I would destroy that car!

aaah, you're using linkage from the stock carb on the weber! (the bracket on the throttle shaft) I hadn't thunk of that...I was just going to drilla hole in the bracket that's on my weber, closer to the throttle shaft, so that it takes less cable travel to obtain all the movement it needs... but, I guess I'll be pullin the stock one back out of the trash to strip it

I got my weber rebuilt, installed, up'n'runnin. port matched the adapter to the intake, and because of that, ended up needing to plug the port into the coolant gallery (1/4 npt). I finally understand why everybody who has a weber was promoting them so much. this thing runs great! idles great, transitions are nice and smooth, better low end torque, and a slight improvement on the top end. MPGs I dunno yet... y'all ever notice that in order to have the throttle cable long enough to idle correctly, it only opens the carb just over 1/2 way? I'm gonna correct that right after I pass emissions (failed the 1st try, new jets on the way)

oh thanks, that did help. sorry, i'm impatient, lazy, and computer stupid. what I like to call, e-literate. 'preciate it!

but on the other hand...it was no help at all. seein's how it says a lot of "if you do not know the original blah blah, buy a selection of jets".... which is what I'm trying to avoid. a lot of spare parts I won't use, and time spent on needless teardowns and rebuilds. so um...you guys with webers at high altitudes...what size jets are you using?

Hey thanks! wiseass! lol

brake cleaner does work best for sure. If you do use something else, ie- carb cleaner, soap'n'water...that's fine, but wipe it down with rubbing alcohol after to remove any residue. it's cheap, and works good

Howdy readers! just got a used weber, and I'm curious what size jets you're running in yours at high altitudes. my place is at 8000ft, but I typically run around as low as 5000 ft, up to 10000 ft or so. the carb came from just above sea level, and has *40 jets in it. thanks for your input! Dan
