  1. Its something i always remember after the fact. Im pretty A.D.D., so i really try to concentrate on getting it all done right, and applying band-aids to myself. My wife says, "if you arent bleeding, you must not be done yet"
  2. What a nice guy! I sure appreciate the thought, but im good to go now. Thanks though brutha
  3. Here i am serving myself some crow to an old thread. The gasket material id used previously, cant be reused and is prone to fail! I guess the ticking id been hearing gradually getting worse, was my gasket slowly getting blown out bit by bit. When I tore it all down for my trans swap i saw how degraded it had become. It was a high density material that appeared real similar to the asbestos material the old guys used to use. It did last a long time, so i guess i cant bitch. Went to napa and got a reinforced type gasket...i got the closest match they had and had to elongate the mounting holes (from 3.5" to a 3" spread) and after 3 miles they seem to be doing fine!
  4. Finally! Got my old crusty GL moving under its own power again. Its only been since february....5 speed swap is done, new front axles, pads and rotors, all new fluids, yadda yadda yadda. Rolled up the windows, and turned the air on to keep the dirt road out of the car, and was assaulted by rodent nesting material. Thats just...thats just great
  5. You pretty much answered your own question there. Drain enough to add the conditioner. Voila!
  6. Oops, i lied. I reread my previous post...im running 205x75-14s, not 215x75-14. Doesnt matter. My bad. Carry on.
  7. Still working on mine here and there. Got my new driveshaft for the 5spd swap (my wife is gonna have kittens when she sees the bill) ordered new front CVs, as well as new pads and rotors. Once thats all in, it'll be time to add all the fluids and fire it up! It hasnt been driven since february, so im a little excited to feel how well the 5 speed harnesses the 80 raging horsepower
  8. I always use napa gold 1361 on my old GL, and its good to go. If your filter is hitting the fan, you have other issues. I didnt know an FL1A would work on it. That would effectively increase the total oil capacity, and mean that (for me) i could quit stocking the 1361, since i already have cars with the fl1a
  9. It may be worth it to a buyer who is looking for that. But you may wait a looooong time before that buyer shows up. Most people will see it as "an older subaru" and see it from the perspective of; is it reliable, good on gas, etc etc. id see it as a good first car for a teen, and so wouldnt pay what you're asking. So dont ask if its worth it...ask yourself how badly do you want to sell it?
  10. In my experience, a bad cat will show other signs as well. Has it lost power? Does it smell terrible during heavy acceleration? Even if you just replace it for peace of mind; that car is still very worth keeping. But, im a gearhead so i look at it from that perspective. I can do the work myself and am not afraid to get dirty in a junkyard scrounging for parts. Paying somebody of dubious integrity and skill to work on it? Uuuuuuh i dunno. If i were in those shoes id probably have a lease and get a new car every two years. Luckily, my skills afford me to be able to drive around in old pieces of character saturated crap!
  11. I would just drain it out, leave the plug out while you do your repairs, then refill it and not worry about it. Its most likely an intake gasket, but you should consider doing the head gaskets while you have it torn down that far. 4.3 heads arent prone to cracking, but do warp sometimes if theyve been real hot, so check for that too.
  12. That looks pretty badass! Exact same color as mine...the wifes, i mean... So i saved the pic, to try and help me convince her that its a good idea! Did driveability suffer at all? How much power did you lose, rolling the bigger rubber?
  13. Got my trans and engine mated back together, and set in to the 84. I used the ea81 flywheel and pressure plate, and an ea82 clutch disk and TOB. Im confident that setup will work juuust fine. Put it in the car as an assembly, no issues there. Cleaned the radiator real good with the hose, and started buttoning things back up. Used Jerrys kit for the trans mount, and that went as smooth as id hoped. Thanks Jerry! Didnt get as much back together as id hoped...but my boy wanted to go to a park; so away we went! I still need to get a rear shaft made, and my front axles boots are about to let go as well (so ill put autozones lifetime warranty to work...again)
  14. Another colorado boy! Im a bit south of castle rock... When it comes to ea81, tire size and driveability, its all relative i guess. You could throw 35s on there and run it offroad, but would you personally be able to deal with that on the highway? not me. Im runnin 215x75-14s (26" with no lift) and my ol' 84 is a bit of a pig out on the highway. But hey, it was with stock tires too! Off road mine does ok...theres only been a couple times atop a gnarly climb where i was like, "aw shoot, she isnt gonna make it and ima hafta back down this mess"...but it always made it. Amazing how slow that little motor will spin. Im still in the middle of swappin in my 5spd, so i cant opine as to whether the low range in it will make a lot of difference over the 4spds. But I'll say go for it and get the 27s. Better that, than wishing you had gone bigger. Gesundheit
  15. My pressure plate was too small as well...and joy of joys, the only other parts they have listed; are out of stock! Woohoo! So im swearing off Rockauto. If i can source it locally, thats what ill do.
  16. I know this; the pressure plate they have available for an '84 GL with a 1.8....is not a pressure plate for an '84 ea 1.8
  17. Some people weld the holes closed on the front and the rear, but i just cut the unused studs off, flush with the face of the hub.
  18. Your eyes picked up a .3mm difference? You're good! I wasnt even aware of the difference initially when i did the conversion to my hubs, so I didnt look for it. Good thing too, it probably would've driven me nuts! My $.02...As long as the holes are drilled properly, you will not notice any difference in how it rides. Mine is smooth as butter, no matter how fast i take it. ("Fast" being a relative term, with my ea 1.8) And though it used to be hubcentric...changing it to lugcentric makes no difference; one's as good as the other.
  19. You can put some nickel anti-seize on the threads so its not a problem in the future, too.
  20. Not saying this is the best stuff out there; i use mobil1 synthetic 5w-30 and Wix filters (Napa Gold)
  21. Mine has a borla Y pipe, and then a single 2 1/4" running all the way back to a thrush turbo muffler with a turndown at the end. Its got a nice burbly idle, and is kinda loud at speed, but not so much that you cant have a conversation with a passenger while accelerating. If i had to do it all over again...id do it exactly the same way
  22. An ea81, with 4 people and gear, at altitude? Let me know your route and days of travel so i can be sure not to be behind you! I guess the plus side is that you'll be able to stop and smell the wildflowers without (intentionally) slowing down! On a weber equipped car, id say bring some smaller jets. On an original colorado car and hitachi, it should still have the altitude compensator dealy (drawing a blank as to what its really called) and so should be okay. I keep an assortment of jets in the glovebox, since on any given day, I may potentially go from 5k to 14k feet.
  23. I think if the cars up on jackstands, and you have a load leveler (cheaper than dirt @ harbor freight) its totally doable, and a lot less brain damage than trying to stab the trans to the engine, already in the car. Thats my theory anyway...
