  1. That's what it sounds like to me. A faulty HG could pressurize the cooling system like that, so even though the engine isn't overheating, the cooling system is so pressurized it boils over the resevoir tank. Keep a sharp eye on your temp gauge that, from what I could tell yesterday, the temp was fine the whole time. Also, lets give credit where credit is due... it was ME that noticed the puddle under your car
  2. I recommend you see this thread. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15033
  3. I'd recommend a early '90s (say 90, 91, or 92) wagon or sedan. Go with AWD if you can find it, and 5-spd. A manual tranny is so much easier to work with/on than an automatic, and will be more fun. A FWD Legacy may be cheaper, but AWD would be great for winter.
  4. I can't decide whether to bring my Turbo Legacy... which I'm not so good at with the clutch (I can only do a respectable launch every 3rd or 4th time) or my Thunderbird Supercoupe, which is having cooling issues right now.
  5. I bet it'd be pretty easy to modify (read: CUT) your old turbo heat shield to work in the existing application. Then you wouldnt have to worry about super hot fuel lines exploding (we can just call your car a fiero ) or melted turbo piping. Also, how bad is the leak on those fuel rails? I know you're sick of hearing it, but another coat of that gray stuff and I bet you'd be good to go
  6. My lifters were so noisy it sounds like the engine is about to explode... they've been ticking like that for about 2 years now. Recently drove the trip from Seattle to Ocean Shores (170 miles?) and then Seattle to Pullman (300 miles?) both round trips. Trust me, the lifters are embarrassing, but mostly non damaging and wont cause engine failure anywhere in the near future
  7. Grr I hate Tahuya! I got a nearly $300 speeding ticket there!
  8. When I lost mine, I just drove around without a cap for about 30 minutes. Oddly enough, not a drop of oil came out.
  9. I know, but I was implying that they needed to be invited. I know people who may never come to the USMB, but are parts of other threads. I was just hopin they'd get an invite thread as well :-)
  10. Sounds great! I'll be there! What's the spread on posts in other clubs inviting people? I know this isn't a club thing, but a subaru thing. I'd love to see some guys from NASIOC or I-Club or LegacyCentral there.
  11. I dont have much helpful to say other than my opinion... In my experiences (both working on cars and reading about others working on cars), adding a turbo to an N/A engine (especially a carbed one) is way more work than its good for. You can probably find a turbo wagon or RX for $1000-$1500. Putting a turbo into your car means pulling the engine and doing extensive work on it, most likely tearing it down to the block (I havent read the other thread on it, but I suppose it may be possible to put it in without tearing down the engine, but just taking it out). This extensive labor, coupled with at least a few hundred in parts.... also keeping in mind the hit in reliability... its just not worth it.
  12. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11832 Thats my thread for my 85 GL wagon I'm selling. it's a 5-spd D/R, but its pretty close to your needs, and I'm in Seattle too.
  13. That's because it's not DEFINATELY up for sale until tomorrow, when I'll be buying myself a new Legacy :-) I'll let you know tomorrow.
  14. Rust CV Axles (listen for bearing noise in the front end as well) Clutch Oil Leaks Lifter Tapping. That's what I'd look for at least, I'm sure others have other things to keep an eye out for. I've never heard of the FAQ, but then, I havent been active on the board long.
  15. Are you a goon too? I was wondering why half of those links were already viewed... and that yellow block looked familiar :-P Also, two people can lift a whole EA82 engine and carry it around, but I doubt they could pull it out of an engine bay (hunched over and all). Keeping that in mind, I bet a short block would be way easy to pull out.
  16. Apparently they didn't have the correct color for an '85. The dude at the parts counter said that an '85 came with either black/white or orange, and neither one of those was in stock. I know some of the newer ones are red... or blue... or whatever, but in the interest of keeping my car pretty stock, I just ordered the same color it had before.
  17. I bought one from the dealer (it was pretty cheap). I'll scan it before I apply it, that way we can hopefully reproduce them easier.
  18. Hey everyone, in an effort to spiff up my car and make it look better, I want to find a new decal to replace the "4wd" on the tailgate (mine is very faded). Anyone know where I can get either a new decal or an image file to have a new one cut?
  19. a dead alternator wouldnt explain the oil pressure being at 0. Sounds like a belt to me... either slipping/loose or completely broken.
  20. Gee, thanks for the help guys, I just finished the job :-P Ugh, now I gotta do the drivers side one sometime. It's BARELY leaking from there, but it's a bitch to get to so I dont wanna do it now. Tex, If you think we can push the stuff out of the way to get the nose of my car in the garage... I'd really like to get those done tonight. I dont work tomorrow so it's a perfect time.
  21. I'm about to replace the psgr side Valve Cover gasket on my 85 Wagon and I was wondering, do I need any kind of sealant for the gasket? It's not a typical gakset (it's a rubber ring) so I figured it wouldnt need sealant. Any tips I should know before doing this? Also, Tex, if you read this while at work, are you still down for helping me do my wheel bearings tonight?
  22. I dont mean to derail your thread, but I wanted some clarification on something that was said. You said "sounds like a bunch of marbles are rattling around, this points to a bad cat". Well, lately my EA82 has been making odd noises at idle. Whenever I'm in a fast food drive-thru (which causes the engine noise to echo around me) I can hear what sounds like a marbe rattling around. I thought it was a loose piece or something. It's very irregular, and only happens when I rev the engine slightly. I was going to check for a loose part somewhere, but is this usually indicitive of a bad cat?
  23. I think the best way to describe is to imagine older Muscle cars.. when they sound really aggressive but the engine always sounds like its about to die.
  24. To be fair, it's possible he thought the car was running great, and had no idea the suspension was in any way bad. He had know way of knowing... and it would suck to sell someone a car and then an hour later have them call you and ask for the money back because they broke it (I'm in no way accusing you of being at fault for the damage, but trying to throw light on his perspective). On the other hand, I know your pain. When I bought my '90 T-Bird Supercoupe, the crank sensor went out on the drive home. The car completely died. It was a small fix, but a huge PITA to get to. Luckily i called the guy and he was kind enough to tow it home and have his mechanic fix the problem. I really lucked out, but he would have been within his rights to say "sorry, the car is yours now, deal with it" and left.
  25. I just replaced the thermostat with a brand new dealer-bought one, and the mechanic I dropped it off at said he burped the cooling system for me.
