EA82T Turbo Delete
scoobiedubie replied to wilsonjacob8's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I predict that you will be disappointed in the results. You could have bought a used turbo for $100. John in Laurelwood, has Subaru parts up the wazoo. He probably has a dozen turbo's. -
The hot wire to the alternator, fries itself and eventually breaks at about 15,000 mile intervals. Before it breaks, it causes all kind of problems with the idle. You need to splice in a new 6" wire section at the end of that wire, after you cut off the brittle portion of the wire which occurs at the very end. You will want to change out this wire splice every 10,000 miles. Other indications that this is the problem is that the engine runs even worse when you turn on any accessory like lights, defroster, or run the electric windows. Also, the points inside the distributor get corroded after only a few thousand miles. Use fine sandpaper to take that corrosion off and improve the spark.

Jack up each front tire separately, grab the tire and see if you can twist the front wheel in any way.

Recommended rear springs '86 Turbo wagon
scoobiedubie replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just slapped on some Loyale shock/spring combination and it looks pretty sharp. The left side sits about 3/4" lower than the right side. And you do not want to fully tighten the top bolts until you lower the car off of the jack. Otherwise it twists the shock shaft when you hit each bump. -
White smoke could be the fin in the exhaust port has cracked and is leaking coolant into the hot air exhaust. If the plugs are normal color and show no white, then this is a likely cause. If a dark gritty residue is on the bottom side of the radiator cap, that would be bits of a bad cylinder head gasket. If the compression is way off in one cylinder, then that could indicate a bad gasket. White on the plug indicates that the coolant is probably from an intake gasket leak. Quick engine overheating and the coolant bottle exploding as you drive, indicates that you have a bad cylinder head gasket since hot gases are pumped into the cooling system. if the intake gasket shows lots of degradation and possible gaps, then you better have replacement gaskets right there. A rough running engine would be indicative of bad intake gaskets.

Buying advice for 85 GL turbo wagon
scoobiedubie replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The rear differential case is the same for all GL's. Buy one for a GL, if you can't find one for a GL-10, and swap out all of the innards. -
Sloppy steering fix? Loyale
scoobiedubie replied to Subarocket's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My ball joint went out on one side. Steering was not tight and there was a frequent click when I turned. Grabbing the front tire and moving it from side to side, revealed the culprit. -

86 GL wagon questions
scoobiedubie replied to TheWanderer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Save your money and buy a wagon at the end of your move, in the city that you move to. 86's are not that great. The loyales get a lot better gas mileage. -

As an alternative to you decommissioning your vacuum system, you find a gal who can suck a golf ball through a 10 foot hose, and let her ride shotgun. -
Two-row radiator heads up for EA82
scoobiedubie replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When you buy a new radiator, you would want to take along the thermostat for the auxiliary fan, because on some brands, there is an interferring raised lip around the hole which prevents the threads from going all the way in. -
The bolt that hold the fuel line supply tube rack, first goes through a standing strut/spacer/leg, then it goes into the manifold . The manifold bolt only goes through the manifold and attaches to the cylinder head. You can touch a long screwdriver to the top of the fuel injector while putting the handle to your ear, and by doing this to each injector, you can compare for any differences. What does the plug color tell you?
-
First of all, you are guessing as to the cause of your problem. White smoke usually comes from coolant leaking into the combustion or exhaust mixture. That white smoke can occur to either leaky intake manifold gaskets, leaky cylinder head gaskets, a crack in the cylinder head between the intake and exhaust valves or a crack in the fin between the intake and exhaust ports on the bottom of the engine. If the spark plugs are white, then you can rule out the crack in the fin. In a hot start, the pressure from hot coolant was probably pumping coolant through a crack or through the cylinder head gaskets, into the combustion chamber. If you are continually replacing coolant, then you have a coolant leak problem. You do have 1 bolt on each end of the intake fuel tube network, that holds the fuel injectors in place.

It is a pretty simple engine. You will find that if you remove anything, the engine won't run well. You can upgrade to a double core radiator and Gen 3 cylinder heads.

Sealing Ea82 valve covers
scoobiedubie replied to Skysm182's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Or you can get the grooves and the gasket sparkling clean, and then coat everything with some gasket sealer. Also put some gasket sealer between the special washers and the bolt stem. -

Ea82 head bolt stuck in head
scoobiedubie replied to Skysm182's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You are going to have to ream the bolt hole out, so that the next bolt can be inserted, so you might as well drive that one out and use the threads to do the reaming.
