ok, THATS what i forgot. i scored a nice bullbar/skid plate/transfer case support, off of craigslist. i screwed with it and screwed with it. couldnt seem to get it to match up. eventually i met true2blue, and he had a nice lift. and we at least got the back mounted up, it all used the original crossmember bolts. but the front still didnt attach. eventually i realized it was a gen ONE bullbar. but i moved the front mounts a bit and made it work. i still havent managed to convince the skid plate to fit. -

i didnt even know they MADE tracers for rimfire cartridges. im kind of a tightass about tracers and such in my yard, anyhow. or shotguns. you know, im on well-water out here. phosphorous, lead, etc, no fun. plus i got 2 dozen free-range chickens. and apparently they havent been told of the danger of eating lead..... dummies.

okay okay. that was easy actually.... so i drove the brat about a year, no problems except the fuel filter clogged up. then i swapped out the exhaust for a nice magnaflow full exhaust. VERY nice piece, and relatively cheap. thick material, like 14g. very smooth bends. i feel like i did some other mods but i cant think of any. i guess i got some wheels from qman. not sure if new wheels is a "mod" per se... so THEN i pulled my ea81, it was working but high miles. figured id refresh it. yknow the story. just new gaskets, degrease the old crud, maybe a real shy head deck, delta torque cam, markjw had some spfi pistons for me. got it all apart, couldnt get the block split. got frustrated and some family drama came up, that distracted me a month or two. at that point id just lost my momentum, and my "familiarity" with the different bolts and details of assembly. so i swore id never go OHC, or fuel injection. i LOOOOVED the simplicity of the ea81. but the ej18 called to me, suberdave hooked me up, and here i am. just got the ej18 in the bay today, not technically hooked up or bolted in yet. the radiator looks like a very pinched spot. if it DOES fit, i dont think ill be able to slide a credit card in between the belts/pulleys, and the fanshroud. long story short, heres a few build pics i took in january. wait.... ok, AFTER i watch the simpsons. i swear. -
got it off of craigslist, some guy in everett. he was cool. he had done a few mods. different seats, stereo with custom center console box for 3-way 4" mids. 6x9s behind the seats. not quite the HEAVY BASS or wattage some of you may brag of, but it sounded pretty cool. he had done the weber conversion himself. so i never got the honor of enjoying the AMAZING POWER of the stock hitachi carb. it had/still has the bed seats. got a hi-top canopy. my sister needs ride to pickup a dresser. i have the only truck in the country apparently, lol..... having a reliable pickup is a blessing AND a curse.

yea i know, i know. i should just take my toyota to some of the meets. but ill feel like a mexican at a klan rally. lol..... no racism meant. its just an analogy. and yes, i AM a serial killer. but only hummer owners. you guys are all safe. i swear. im a serial killer. not a liar. we are an honest bunch. really. but on a serious note, even if i had wanted to drive my other rig to a soob meet, i didnt have tabs for a few months, and couldnt renew em til i cleared up some court stuff. <fines, not murders> lmao..... and p-town, yea. im a *********************, hehe..... but for the record, people HAVE been known to roll cross state to hang with strangers. just another handy excuse to travel and roadtrip in a car you love. speaking of DENMARK!!! maybe we should all have our next wcss in amsterdam!!! ill buy the first round of Lattes....... i was in amsterdam overnight in 2007, on a routine stopover from south africa that got delayed 18 hours. free room for the night, and free taxicab coupon, courtesy of the airline, KLM. thank you. awesome city. anything americans would call "old" in new york or boston, is still fresh and green by dutch standards. anyhow im rambling. yea i will be at wcss, even if i gotta take my tacoma there or hitchhike or drive my womans mustang. dont laugh if i show up in a ford product though. buncha dang elitists...... and yea, im always meaning to post pics of my brat. its juuuust.... it doesnt compare to yours. bratmans is super clean and shiny, even though i know for a fact that he actually plays in the mud. id mention a few others but i dont wanna miss anyone and seem rude. qmans ive seen and touched. veddy veddy nice. but he is a crawler, and i lean more toward the rally style. you know, mild lift, 195-75-14s AT tires. ok fudge it all i will post a couple build pics RIGHT now.

so..... P.S. not meaning to discourage anyone from further off, geographically, from hanging out with me, i am always down to hang with any sooby fans. but let me rephrase my original post. does anyone between ENUMCLAW, ISSAQUAH, KENT/AUBURN, and NORTH BEND type area want to make friendly with me and hang out for a beer/burger and some garage talk? im next to the river. you are welcome to take a dip if its hot out. PRIVATE riverfront. a.k.a. zero broken beer bottles, tweakers, drama, used-condoms, etc, that one usually finds at "classic river hangout spots". soooo..... yup, thats about it. enjoy my private riverfront acres while the weather is hot. i set up a riverboard, also. does anyone here know what riverboarding is? its not like what they did to political prisoners in cuba. thats WATERboarding. riverboarding is much more enjoyable. its a lot like waterskiing in the sense that you are tied to a rope. but you are semi-stationary. the water moves, you dont. just a 2 foot X 2 foot piece of plywood tied to underside of bridge. or tree. whatever. im sure the same type of personality that thinks driving out to the middle of nowhere, and breaking your car in knee-deep mud, is ENJOYABLE and FUN, would enjoy riverboarding also. i know I love it.

sounds okay to me. just get a good clear plan. and material. i uhhhh, sadly dont have any great way to cut material. i mean, i make it happen, but i use a sawzall. and its slow, and crude. i need a nice plasma cutter, but havent had the budget for one. i wasnt really looking for anyone in PORTLAND to hang with me. but thats cool, i am not fighting it. come on over. if you are a gun fan, i can legally shoot on my property. this "neighborhood" shoots like all day every day in the summer. i am very safe and i dont consider guns kids toys, im real real picky about using the safety, pointing them down, etc.... so no worries about any of that.

any way to lift my brat WITHOUT lift kit?
tallwelder81 replied to tallwelder81's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
now thats what im looking for!! do those options hurt suspension travel or handling noticeably? i dont mean the higher center of gravity aspect. i mean, you know, camber, axle angles, etc.... -

What do you have for EJ swap exhuast?
tallwelder81 replied to Mr. Brat's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
nobody is using the magnaflow y-pipe deal with the built in cat? i have that on my ea81 brat. kinda figured id do the same on my ej18 now. any thoughts on that? -
anyone done the mini lifts? 1" or 2"?
tallwelder81 replied to tallwelder81's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
michel appel is kinda new and unproven. no offense to him, you gotta start, nobody is born running. and sjr looks good, he has a great reputation. but kinda expensive for some chopped up rectangle mild steel tubing. and his site doesnt list anything like a 2". but maybe theres a reason for that. lack of demand? or maybe some technical problem, or 2" inch just isnt worth the trouble of tearing apart your car. -
hey, damnit. YOU arent supposed to hijack MY threads. only i am supposed to do that to everyone else. what the heck??? lol.....

i seem to recall reading of them on here but now cant find any info. i want my brat a bit taller. but im a rally man, not a crawler. and i take corners fast. plus, i honestly LIKE the way a brat looks with bigger tires, say 27", on a not uber-lifted body. kinda gives it that beefy, brawny, butch CAR look. compared to like a big truck with a shrunk down body look. to each their own. i figure if my brat can climb over an abandoned dishwasher on an old remote logging road, its doing anything and everything i will ever ask of it. so yeaaaaaa.... anyone have any input on shorty lifts? 1" seems like more work and pain than its worth. maybe 2". posssssibly a 3 inch???? my whole view is that, if i refuse to run 29s or 30s, then my actual pumpkin and exhaust will still be not much higher than factory stock. if my ground clearance doesnt grow, a big lift does me no good in rally style play. i get the whole concept of approach/departure angles. and yea, it could help me some. but its not a priority. steady balance on a 40mph corner on loose gravel is more important and not something im willing to compromise. does anyone sell 2 or 3 inch for ea81? i keep seeing ea82.

so maybe like 250 US cash? thats not bad..... out of my budget TODAY, but very attainable in the future at some point. wonder what shipping would be.

johnsons DOES have a very respectable stock of bolts, nuts, etc.... first place i went. no studs though. just bolts with heads. home depot, no dice. im just gonna go to tacoma screw or fastenall. driving around is eating up my savings on buying a USED transplate. home depot had all-thread. but allthread is a very low quality steel. anyhow, apologies for the hijack. pretty confident about being ready on saturday.

no no, its an ej18. not 22. my question is WHICh ej18. i was looking around the web. and saw a couple places <most notably wikipedia> that there are THREE possible ej18s. with three possible power ratings at very different rpms. ej181 108hp @ 6000rpm ------- 110trq @ 3200rpm ej182 113hp @ 6000rpm ------- 114trq @ 4500rpm ej183 118hp @ 5600rpm ------- 121trq @ 3600rpm im just curious. it doesnt really affect me in any mechaincal way. but, call me crazy, its something id like to know. whatever the case, yes, i know that even the weakest version is heaps stronger than my stock ea81. 73hp @ 4800rpm

Awesome! now thats the kind of solution i was hoping for. some relatively cheap and relatively easy factory parts swap with a solid and noticeable improvement. but this all brings up a NEW question. where do i get ej16e pistons, and how common are they, or to put it another way, how high should my hopes be of finding them? P.S. thanks leone. big clear pics are always a help. and thanks to everyone else also.
