  1. to me it sounds like the well known 99 AT problem, try flushing the tranny and the give it a bottle of Trans-X, then top off with your regular ATF. But it could also be the MAF but they rarely fail. If it continues after doing the tranny flush then I'd seriously take it in. Those specific trannys have a seal in them that fails and causes it to not engage correctly, it sounds as if yours may be beyond the trans-X fix, if that is the problem.
  2. did it! smoothed out my idle, and it is going like a champ, the old one was all gummed up and the little thing inside barely moved. I pulled off the hose and cleaned it out as well had some build up.
  3. So... this may be a dumb one, are there 2 PCVs on a 97 EJ22? and they are towards the back of the valve cover on both sides right? forgive my idiocy:lol:
  4. I agree I always run a WIX filter, they just seem alot better, the only thing from Bosch that I would use on a Subie would be the alternator.
  5. if I was you I'd try to scrounge up the $$ for the EJ22T and do the swap! and try to get your hands on a WRX TD04 turbo, they are a direct upgrade from the stock turbo, my friend did it and WOW a big diff. But it does require a bit more work to do the swap.
  6. might as well replace the fork as well, my 97 broke the fork a while back and I have heard that its a pretty common occurrence.
  7. I will also PU new accessories belts as well, ALT belt so squeaky.
  8. nice, I will hopefully have the cash next month to do all the work and I would rather you do it/show me the way, than take it to someone who knows nothing about them. Do you think it would be wise to do the front wheel bearings while in the hub? just for safety measures, car has 140k and I really dont think they have ever been done.
  9. went to the bank today, NA on the loan, geez our credit isnt even that bad! cant beleive they wouldnt loan us the $.GD I was going to come look at the car ,but our bank is stupid. we are sitting at 600 and they still wouldnt give us the damn loan. Oh well gotta love the economy. I went and test drove that 99 Legacy, it did great no oil leaks HGs looked fine BUT it took 8 sec to go into drive, so I told the guy about the known issue and they said and I qoute " oh all AT trannys do that, its just a normal thing" so I turned my back to him and told him he was an idiot! there was no way in hell I was going to pay 6k for a car that needed a tranny job done. he said ok then 5 1/2k I laughed at him. I just dont think the Trans X would hold up for more than a year at best, and the wife said there is no way we are financing a car that has a tranny problem. Oh if only it was a 5spd, or a year younger. Live and learn I guess. oh GD how much do you charge to do a T-belt job? and new front CVs?
  10. you will probably get fairly sqiurrly with it, so building a beast engine would be a waste of time, I had a 68 camaro rs when I was 18 with a 383 stroker, 3 tickets 1 85 in a 55,92 in a 55, and 75 in a 55, not too fast but enough to get a ticket in the safety corridor over Mt.Hood, then I totaled in due to young person error, downshifted to 2nd @ 60mph when I meant to go to 3rd and bam into the ditch and a tree, car destroyed and broken collar bone. I learned my lesson very quickly.
  11. "try" to find a EJ22T, and do the swap, then ditch the turbo and find a TD04 from a WRX, I was told they are basically a direct fit, thats what my buddy did and WOW! a beast, he did it in a legacy sedan I think a 92, he then found a SS hood at a yard, how I have no idea. But doing the hybrid build works great, at least I have heard good things about it, GD is the guy you want for advice on that one. He had his legacy on a dyno @ 221HP
  12. agreed! just do some kind of cat back, your not really going to gain much HP from the exhaust, I'm guessing your going for the sound more than the performance, and in that case, nothing sounds better than a boxer engine rumbling @ 2000k, at least thats when I like the sound.
  13. its at Affordable Auto wholesale on 82nd, yes I know 82nd is bad news:mad: but I checked the reviews online and 2 out of 20 are bad, but then again they could be the ones who posted the good ones...just saying
  14. thanks guys, I really appreciate all the advice, I think I will go down there and see what I can do, the car is actually listed for $6,995, so I'm hoping if in good condition I can get away with it for 5 1/2k or so and the new timing belt WP pulleys etc. You guys should check it out, its on Autotrader zip 97055 then select legacy and year 1999, its the beautiful green Legacy L.
  15. Have the tires balanced and rotated, somtimes and tire off balance will cause a vibration over a certain MPH. There are a lot of threads on here about the torque bind, try replacing the fluid
  16. yeah, I havent asked them yet if they would but odds are they will tack on another $800 to the price and if the tranny needs help another $1000, we shall see.
  17. unfortunately our credit is somewhat in the hole at the moment, hence the purchase of a car to build it back up, but our banks are real sticklers.

  18. So I called the dealer and the guy said that the car shifts fine no delay between D and P or P and R, so maybe the issue was fixed by the previous owner( I hope) I'd hate to buy it then have the issue and have to dump more $$ down the drain. Hopefully they have service records.
  19. I'd be interested in the car you have but we dont have cash to buy one and unfortunetly have to finance through a dealer.

  20. What about the Lucas oil tranny fix stuff? I've used it for the last 2 years on my 97 2.2, the injector cleaner that is and it has worked wonders surprisingly. GD whats your take on this issue? have you seen this problem at your shop? ideas!!!!
  21. well thats great:lol: hopefully the probelm happened with the previous owner and the had it fixed! arrgh, but if it does have the delay well there is bargaining room:banana: but dealers can be !@#^ haha. So that bottle of stop leak stuff is that at the dealership? or napa? so will this mystery bottle fix the issue if it has it?, I may just look else where if this tranny turns out to be a flop.
  22. well the thing is we will be financing the car, I love the EJ22 motor and this car is flawless! I just went to look at it, it looks brand new, no leaks nothing and the dealer agreed to have the t-belt and water pump and other things done for me. GD I'd love to take a look at the OB but she loves this car so sadly I must decline, but at least I know now that the 4spd at is a good tranny so she will have many years of service if we get it.
  23. are these 4spd AT trannys reliable? I found a car my wife wants real bad, but I hate ATs so I'm still in the decision mode, its a 99 Legacy L wagon, 87,500 miles:banana: criuse, air,PWD,PDL,moonroof, roof rack, just overall immaculate! they are asking $6,500, which to me is a good deal, since it does have the EJ22 and then freakin car has less than 100k.
  24. thanks for all the advice and info, I'm a bit of an extremist when it comes to my cars, I love them to run as well as they where at 0 miles(most of the time) so I do overkill sometimes, but your right I'll just stick with the basics. I dont think the 97 2.2s lifters can be adjusted, I thought they are hydraulic? I could be way off though
