  1. So as many of you know I have been having probs with my 5MT in the Lego. Mysterious sounds, me frantically trying to figure it out with no avail, well tomorrow is the day that we shall see just what is happening down under(no pun intended). I'm bringing the wagon to GD, we are tearing down the car and doing a trans swap, found a used one from a IMP with an EJ18 and 3.90 rear end, probably have more power in 5th due to the tranny being geared for the EJ18, but no biggie since I travel on Mt.Hood almost weekly, the extra pull will be nice:) . I'm just stumped at why it has failed at only 142k?? I know they have bad input shaft bearings but I thought those tend to last more than 142k miles. I've had the car since it had 113k, the day I got it I took it and replaced the front and rear diff fluid and all scheduled maintenance. Only replaced the clutch once. and I did the fluid again about 4 months ago. I don't beat it up per say, just a lot of mountain driving and forest roads. I'm going to try and post pics of the inside and of what we find. Its growling in 1st,2nd,3rd,4th on decel but not much in 5th, getting tougher to get into 2nd gear, some slight grinding in 3rd and 4th, clunking in between all gears. I'll keep everyone posted on our findings... it should be interesting, and fun:banana: Learning from GD is like Yoda to Luke:lol: master Recent work, within the last 4 months. Timing belt Kit Water Pump Oil pump re seal New KYB GR2s, I did them myself and it was a pita. 2 oil changes, castrol Syntec blend 5w30 new cam seals (dealer purchased) radiator hoses. Thermostat Coil pack spark plugs plug wires PCV valve new fog lamp bulbs New interstate MT-35 Wix fuel filter Wix air filter New crank seal (dealer purchased) New set of Toyo Observes studless snow tires, yeah they rock:grin: pretty aggressive tread pattern.
  2. vacuum leak?? is it an AT or 5MT? check the EGR. sounds like a vacuum leak to me or failing fuel pump.
  3. just because it pulls up hills doesn't always mean the clutch is good. I'd put my money on the disc and TOB any day.
  4. agreed, do check the more accessible items first, but it does sound like your clutch and TOB are done for, I'd get it checked out and fixed before you have a bigger problem.
  5. if your positive its an input shaft bearing, you do know how much work that is to do?, you might be better off with a new clutch kit and a good used tranny from a yard. Save you alot of time and money, I think the bearings for that trans are pretty steep. I have basically the same trans as you. I found one for less than $350.
  6. The noise you are hearing is probably a long destroyed throw out bearing, like I said your due for a new clutch kit, and throwout bearing.
  7. Your clutch is done. Find a reputable shop or local USMB board member and get it replaced. Its not the accessories belts, not when you stop on it and it sluggishly moves, that's a fried clutch. Mine is being done by a board member whenever I can shake this bug I've had for 5 days.
  8. HF has some pretty good stuff, but I have always preferred craftsman over many others. My tool box in the Subie is full of HF tools, I figure if I end up losing any, I rather it be those:lol: Daredevil I had no idea you are a "professional tech" I recall something about a rod knock....but it was and still is good ole EA82 lifter tick. I think I may hit up HF soon, they have a pretty good deal on a press and scanner.
  9. it takes more than 1 qt of oil, I believe the front, well in my 97 takes 7.4pts, and the rear is 1.7pts.
  10. google gear hack, there is a link for subaru transmission codes, as long as the ratio is the same as yours you should be fine, you could use an OB or legacy tranny as well. I think... check out the site.
  11. is it the round style reservoir? or the square?, I was told the square are far better.
  12. grinding,howling,jerking,clunking,buzzing,thumping..... was it really ran that low? if so a replacement may be in order, or just try draining it out and putting fresh oil in.
  13. Anyone have a early model legacy power steering pump, that's not leaking? I need it for my 97 Lego EJ22 5MT, it has the ghost turbo effect and squeal at start up, I was told by GD that the early model was way better, I'd also need the mounting bracket.
  14. So does anyone know "if" Subaru finally found a fix for the HG problems?, I have seen cases of 05's leaking but haven't heard of anything newer than that happening.
  15. So does my 97 lego 2.2 have a center diff?? I know its a funny question, but I though they only have a front and rear diff. Its a 5MT, I'm getting ready to change out the trans soon, I was up on mt.hood today, and noticed some slippage as if the system is not operating properly, along with all the gear noise(hence the replacement:lol:)
  16. If your worried about the power loss do the EJ22 swap and get some torque cams.
  17. a shop can make one like that for probably less than $200, painted and mounted, just find a local fab shop and ask away, as for the lights, I would run those in a heartbeat.
  18. do you not remember you are driving an AWD, "brakes" and suspension will need to be done. Along with tranny etc. If your planning to do all of this, why are you wasting your time with an older car? why not just buy a newer WRX for the same if not less than what your going to spend on a swap? that would make the logical sense right? otherwise just do cams. I think you need a turbo car not an NA. As I have stated before, go to NASIOC for boost help. I have seem many WRX's for sale all over the US on craigslist etc for less than 10k! thats about how much your going to end up at in the long run, and whomever your going to pay to do it. If you had a 98-2000 RS then I would say you better do it! but ya dont, your wasting your time and money.
  19. go with the franken motor, or just a set of cams, but if you have the money to dump into it, by all means go for it. But finding an EJ22T isn't the easiest thing, they are fairly desired. Check on NASIOC they are boost heads over there, I'm sure one out of 100 may have some tech advice, just don't fall for the bolt ons.
  20. yeah its pretty insane, I'm hoping GD with do a build thread for all of us that would like some insight on things. I bet he is going to put it in his own brat:banana:
