  1. All the fluids will be changed, no choice on some since the engine is not in it atm and all the gaskets being replaced.
  2. I stopped in today to have a look at the Wagon and check the brakes. All the brakes checked out fine. Stopped by the junk yard and picked up a stock radio with the CD player and a cargo tray. Me hard at work.
  3. Great news, the brakes were fine. I pulled them and checked each one and did some clean up. Hit up a You Pull It and landed a stock radio w/ a cd player and a legacy liner for the back as well. Today is a good day.
  4. Unfortunately it sat for 4 years behind the garage, so it was unaviodable.
  5. I haven't had a chance to look at the brakes on my 98 Legacy Outback but my mechanic said they might be locked up. I will be going out to take a look tommorrow, if it is the case, what can you all recommend in dealing with it so I have a clue when I go?
  6. I have been reading through the Subaru site about the various engines and am not sure what I have as 1, it's at the mecahnics and 2, it's in pieces. The vin says it's a 2.5L H4 DOHC 16V. Is this a turbo or not?
  7. Ok, thanks. I'm thinking of bulling the engine anyways and worth while parts and scrapping the body. I'll just wait til I do that to work on the engine.

  8. Hey Rick, how hard is it to replace head gasket on an e81 while still in the Brat? Thanks

  9. My Brat's body has finally seen it's last day. So now I am at the point of deciding what I want to do. Currently I am thinking of getting/making a rail buggy and resurrecting the Zombrat. Anyone have links or such for this idea? Thanks.
  10. I found a 96 outback that doesn't run. I am waiting to see if it is still avail and what engine it has in it. If it's worth getting what else is compatible with my 98 outback legacy?
  11. I was stoked when I saw the 5 speed. After a year in the Brat I have gotten to dislike driving an automatic. I drive my wife's Jeep Liberty to work for the time being and I feel like I am forgetting to do something or I will try to throw myself out the windshield when I attempt to hit the clutch when I am not paying attention. Now I'll have to remember there is a 5th gear.
  12. That is one thing I do not like about Craigslist. People will post vehicles that are either junk, have something wrong with it, yet they will ensure you it runs great. It did not occur to me what he said about the engine, then again I just hit my 1 year mark as a Subi owner and addict, so I am still learning.
  13. A friend of mine out in Ohio was in need of a new car for their paper route. I jumped on Craigslist and searched for Subaru. The first car on the list said "1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon automatic power windows remote start new tires new brakes and rotors all around 193k on the body motor has under 80k this is a 2.4 liter boxer motor runs and drives great very dependable car lots of room all wheel drive" So off they went to look into it and by noon they will be proud owners of their first Subie.
  14. The owners manual says you can disengage the AWD for service reasons, can it be driven like that on a regular basis?
  15. With my Brat sidelined I was out looking for another car. Things were looking bleak. Then my wife's ability to spot a Subie didn't fail us. She spotted a 98 Outback Legacy sitting behind a building that turned out to be the dealership we were looking to pay a visit to. So we walked out in the back to take a look at it. It is is excellent condition. Only one minor rust spot due to a ding, the rest is clean. The interior is like new, non-smoker from the looks of it. 120K miles The kicker, the engine is sitting in the back. The owner was a mechanic that worked there and it had a blown head gasket, so they pulled the engine to do the work but between lack of time and lack of exp on Subie engines, it got mothballed. Has all the parts and gaskets for the job. Got talking with the owner of the dealership and he wanted $750 for it but said he said it was worth $300 for scrap when I first talked to him. SO when I came back I offered $300 and I'd have it off his property today. He chewed on it for a bit and said $500. If I waited a day or so he would let it go for $300 but he would be trying to get money back on the gaskets and new parts. The gasket set alone is worth $200, so after consulting my mechanic who was there to look it over before the offering began, We took it for $500. So now I am having it put together for around $500. All told I'm looking at $1500 to have it up and running and tuned up. Anyone have links for engine rebuilding in case it's needed?
  16. That one came from TN I was told. Drove it up there to trade. Odd.
  17. Got a person interested in that part but I'm not sure what to charge. ideas?
  18. For me it wasn't a deal regardless of the cost. Looking up parts locally turned up nothing. There are no local junk yards with Subies and I am in need of a car I can safely drive when I buy it, with no major repairs needed. I have neither the time nor the spare money to throw into anything. For anyone interested, it is at the Sam Swope in Clarksville, IN. They said a few people have came out to look at it but none have returned.
  19. No pic at the moment and I am going by what my wife told me when I called. I'm at work so I have yet to see the dmg
  20. RIP ZomBrat. Last week or so I started noticing a steering issue with my Brat. I knew that I woul;d have to work on it eventually and now it was telling me it REALLY needed to be fixed. I has also heard a clunk sound towards the back but could not see what it was. On my trips to and from home I started noticing that the car was getting into the habit of lurching when I hit a pot hole or tugging towards trucks when they passed. Then Wensday came with the snow and when I tried to get home, it was all I could do to stay on the road. So it sat at the truck stop until I could get it home. The wife took it in to have the front end checked to see how much repairs were going to cost us. Turns out the cost would be nothing because it wasn't the front end that was the issue, it was the rear. Turned out the axel supports rusted off and we were lucky to have been able to drive it at all without getting in an accident. Scary to think I was doing 65/70 with the axel just sitting there. They had to lift the body to get it off the lifts at the shop. So now the ZomBrat is now dead. Now to get it back hoe so I can start stripping off what is left of use and decide what to do with them.
