Suspension improvements for Subaru Loyale
Naked Buell replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Suspension
Here is the pic of the spacers dropping the diff slightly to correct cv angle. Notice how straight the cv's are. No stress here. -
So in my Brat I have 2.2T. I have an Sti 5 speed. My question is how to make the speed-o work? The 5 speed has the vss coming out of the tranny and I am not sure how to make this work. I know someone mentioned that I had to connect up the vss to the dash of the ea. Any advice?

Respect for the EA81 and performance mods!
Naked Buell replied to RAD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am not sure where he got that number for the swap. My donor car was $500 and then I rebuilt the 2.2T motor. It is a lot of work, don't get wrong, actually more than I had anticipated. I still have my ea81 rebuilt in the Rx with only 6,000 on her. As a matter of fact, my ej swap isn't done still and I have been working on her for years now. I actually thought of putting the ea81 heads on that they make for the airplane heads. More flow and polished but that isn't cheap. I would love to see more mods for the ea81 you may have or have done that I could use on the Rx. I think most go the ej cause they are already lifted it and are pushing way bigger tires than stock and it eats up that 85hp rather quickly along with the mpg. I am not trying to discourage in fact I like what you are doing. It would be awesome to do performance mods that didn't cost huge amounts of money and you didn't have to change a bunch of stuff. So keep what you find coming. I am interested and of course we love pics. Nice points GD -
I rebuilt my ea81 just because it is such a great little motor and put it in my Rx. But I wanted more for my Brat and that is why I decided to do the Ej swap and put in a 2.2T. I was afraid to start but just did it anyway and if you just do the adapter plate ej-ea, get the 5 speed ea tranny, then you aren't really changing anything but the motor and upgrading to a stronger tranny.

anybody ever cut open their fuel tank?
Naked Buell replied to Bratastick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm liking what you are doing. I may have to do a custom fuel tank for the Brat because I have the 2.2T and are being told that the older tanks don't have the baffles to work with the efi engines. Plus it is such a small fuel tank. Either a custom one or a surge tank. But a surge tank doesn't fix the capacity I can carry. -

I must comment RAD; I love the ea81 and is why I fell in love with them and proved itself to me over and over again. But as you stand by the ea81, u should also be standing next to the ej. The Ej is based from the ea. Why do you think it is easily getting 300,000. I had one in my Brat. But the amount of money you can put into the ea to get more out of her, you could easily upgrade to the Ej and have more in hp, fuel injection, torque. If you did just a regular ej engine upgrade with the adapter plate it wouldn't be difficult. I took my Brat ea81 rebuilt her and put her into my Rx. But when you want to pass someone, you really have to get on her and being screaming way to high just to pass safely and I didn't like having the feeling of not knowing if I have enough room to make the pass. I needed more Hp and torque and the ej was the way to go. Like others have said, you won't be able to get that much out of her. You have to come to the point that even though the ea81 is great, the ej is better, hands down. It's just technology. Subaru took a great motor and improved it to the Ej. But the ea81 is a swiss watch. -
I already asked in another thread, but the disadvantages or advantages this mod. It seems the easiest is just to re-drill.

4x140 - 5x100 Wheel Adapters
Naked Buell replied to Naked Buell's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So have been researching and have to ask, especially the ones that have changed the lug pattern; It seems like the best and economic solution is just do a re-drill of the hub. Cheaper and you don't put any added stress on the hub bearings. So my question is, what are the advantages, disadvantages of the 6 lug to the 5 lug? Is it just that you can do a brake upgrade???? Comments please.. -
Why biz and scion in this group?
Naked Buell replied to 1997reduxe's topic in BRZ and its Sister the Scion FRS/Toyota GT86
I second that notion. Subaru not being Awd. I was disappointed. -
Thx for the confirmation.

First off, I am sorry for your lost. Second, way cool that you have your Best friends car and are going to do something with. I like to do a mix of both, street and offroad. I like to make it performance wise as if I needed to take it off road and had to get on it, it would only grin at me.

For anyone out there who likes to learn stuff, I taught myself how to weld. I went and bought a lincoln flux core, Lowe's, $400 with the rolling stand, and then on youtube, a guy lists all the parts to buy and how-to guidance to convert it to a mig. Best thing I've done so far. You can do the thin sheetmetal to fix our cars and you can do thick stuff too. But I always have the arc welder for the big thick stuff. So my advice, don't be afraid to learn, you just have to jump in. I never thought I would be able to do what I did to my Rx but check it.

Anyone else like to comment.

Yep, What DaveT said; get underneath it and grab ahold of the driveline and try to turn it by hand, shake it, see if you can't get movement. If not, not your u-joints.

1993 Loyale Wagon 4x4 water inside door...
Naked Buell replied to Len Dawg's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You have to think too that it isn't going to fight against gravity. You would have to be driving through water all the time and 4 wheelie through water all the time for that to happen. More likely it is coming from above. I had water in the way back of my Rx under the carpet where the jack is and crap and would pool water until it rotted it out. I couldn't figure out where the water was coming from until I decided to try to take out the tail lights and I found the problem. It was running down the hatch gutter to the tail lights and running into the inside of the car. Made a huge mess out of the car. But if I hadn't of found it, I wouldn't have made the awesome rear tail section that I sport now. Check out "What have you done to your Subie Lately", close to the end. I am going to go with "What is water from above for $200 Alex". -
So I have an 88 Rx with disc all the way around. My question is; is the hubs the same all the way around? Front and Rear the same? Comments and advice please. Oh, and you will be graded and this may be on the final.

Welcome my fellow Subie Brother. I did not know that about Yonkers NY. Interesting fact. See you around on the site.

Might have to build a custom one. Research begin.

That is B.S. I haven't checked but one site that used to do that was Edmunds.com. It would tell you what the dealer buys the cars for. One guy, found out what the dealer bought the truck he wanted and then offered $500 more than what the dealer bought it for and it took 5 dealers but the 5th one took the deal. So it is the time when you buy. Best time is very beginning of the month or right at the end of the month. That is when they are trying to make there commission. In a book a read that was written by a car saleman. You just have to shop around, know what the car is worth and deal. The Dealer who wants to make the deal will deal. There is a place close to me, DaveSmith, sells car and trucks, and he awesome on prices, and I have found Subaru's there, people fly in, he has people pick them up at the airport and bring them to their new vehicle. He has dealerships all over and can get "any" vehicle you may want. I would give them a call or look them up. DaveSmith.com. Plus the money you may save, it can be shipped.

Oh yeah, one more modification. It is mentioned in the write up that it may increase cv angle from the rear diff outwards. So what I did, because no one likes to do a mod that causes more problems down the line, is the four bolts that hold the the rear diff, I lengthened. I set my floor jack on the rear diff, with the tires on the car, removed the bolts that hold the diff., then slowly lowered the jack until I liked the angle of the cv's. Then I measured the distance and with and bought spacers and longer grade 8 bolts and re-installed and my cv's are perfectly straight. I will take a pic and post later.
