Are California Subarus different?
skishop69 replied to franbev's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There a still a few aftermarket direct fit CATs, the O2 is available and the ECU can be rebuilt. There are still two companies willing to work with the old Subie stuff. I got one for my XT GL10 a few years back. -

+1 It has an electronic feedback carb, ECU, CAT and O2 sensor. -
5 speed compatibility between generations?
skishop69 replied to jaytee's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Uhhhh..... No. No adapter/spacer. It bolts right up. Cross member and shifter linkages need to be modified as well as the driveline. -
Volltage problem now, 1988 Subaru GL
skishop69 replied to carpyblue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bad ground. Yeah.... bad ground..... definitely bad ground. lol Check the voltage at your battery. Then test the voltage from the positive coil circuit to the negative battery post and compare it. Then test the voltage from the negative coil circuit to the positive battery post and compare it. That should tell you which circuit is bad. It might not be the ground, I just felt like going all Rainman for some reason. lol -
You have to lower the engine as part of the lift, so front CV's are not the issue. The rears are the ones you have to worry about. You have to make the call on whether or not to drop the rear diff. Dropping it saves stress on the CV's especially if you're wheeling, but you'll lose 2"-4" of clearance at the diff if you do.

EA82 to EJ22 in progress!
skishop69 replied to firehawk618's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Woohoo! I really need to get my home projects done so I can get my XT GL10 converted. I've been sitting on the whole package for a few years now. You'll love the new found power. Congrats! -
Worlds record Subaru parade....
skishop69 replied to old sub freak's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is a good joke and I do find it funny. Even though I was being humorous, I hate everything about working on European cars. BS connectors, required 'special' tools, over engineering to an alarming degree and making things waaaay more difficult than they need to be. Ever change a belt on an Audi? The car has to be put in the 'service' position before you can even start. IE: You have to separate the entire front grille, bumper and core support assembly from the car. WTF!? We should pin this for now. I think the older gen people should make a good showing for this record and even dominate it. lol I love my Baja, but 9 times out of ten, I will take my Brat out. -
Rear Brat Window Seal Differences?
skishop69 replied to BratRod's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nope. That seal will only work with a one piece window. The sliders have a wide frame around them. -
Brat dashboard speakers
skishop69 replied to Downwash77's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They are replaceable, but it will take a little bit of work. You want to purchase 3x5 speakers. Remove the old ones. I believe they have a little frame around them. You'll need to file or Dremel the frame to accept the new size. Cut the wires (with connector) from the old speakers and solder them to the new speakers and install. I did all the speakers in my Brat some time ago and finally got around to building a factory looking custom center console for a new head unit. I even installed an amp (well hidden) and two subs under the seats. The install took a while as I made sure the way things are fitted would deter anyone from trying to take them IF they found them.. Unless they happen to carry very specialized tools and have about 2 hours to waste removing them. Hehehe. -
Rear Brat Window Seal Differences?
skishop69 replied to BratRod's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So I did a little more checking and the DL DID come with a one piece rear. Still don't know if the seal is the same. -
Rear Brat Window Seal Differences?
skishop69 replied to BratRod's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, the seal is the same unless it is gen 2, then the window is aftermarket because IIRC, the gen 2 didn't come with a one piece rear. At least, I've never seen one in a GL or DL. Pics would be helpful. -
Okay what am I missing!
skishop69 replied to PleiadesUnited's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Weird. I get the premium wires from NAPA (Balkamp) for my '84 and they're spot on. EA81 turbo and N/A are the same wires so.... -

Is this trans what the seller says?
skishop69 replied to Zebbadiesel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There was never a 4.11 or 4.44 EA82 trans. 3.70 or 3.90 was it. What is he claiming it out of? Those are EJ ratios and will not adapt to an EA series engine. -
The ticking sure sounds like a lifter or rocker arm issue, It is definitely at valve train speed. The rumble isn't as clear, but from what I could pick up, there are two possibilities. Either exhaust or driveline vibration/drone. If you can duplicate it free revving or power braking it (IE, not moving) then it's exhaust.

That's because they are getting them from Australia so you're paying for that shipping too.

thread repairs - your choice for our old girls

Yeah, they're not cheap for sure. I only use them at work or if I really booger up something at home like a head bolt. -
Is a wrx or sti swap worth it?
skishop69 replied to Dawes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
+1 It all depends. Is a Loyale worth dumping $5000 - $6000 dollars and hundreds of hours of fabbing and wiring work? IMO, hell no. A Brat, yes. A wagon or coupe, maybe. Plain EJ swap. Hell yes! Cheap and easy. An STI swap depends on if you find the 'miracle' donor car for under a grand. Otherwise, you'll pay through the nose. -

Yes, the green sleeve locker Loctite will resist exhaust temps. It's good to 700 or 800 degrees. Only way to get it out is with a torch. I don't back the tap up more than a turn when cutting aluminum. I've found it tends to wallow out the hole. I do, however, blow compressed air around the tap to clean the chips out and use plenty of lube. Timeserts are not truly removable. Because of the installation method, the whole becomes expanded when installed. More so when installed in aluminum making it near impossible to get a tight fit if you try to install another. They are extremely hard and I've never seen or heard of one stripping out. Seen plenty of bolts strip , but not the Timesert. -

Helicoil is the cheapest and easiest and will hold fine when done properly. Always use Permatex green sleeve locker on the coil when inserting it the let it cure overnight before putting it into service. The sleeve locker will permanently bind the coil to the part and stop the coil from unraveling when the bolt is torqued down. The other repair, which is more expensive, but far superior is a Threadsert. Yes, the hole is slightly bigger, but it will never fail. We use these to rethread the Cadillac Northstar engines when doing head jobs. Nothing better. -
