I have yet to find a replacement panel for new gen stuff. So I cut sections of of rust free cars that have been wrecked, but on new gen stuff it's a pain because the rockers have other layers of steel behind the outer, and there are spot welds everywhere. It's a pain to cut off, and more of a pain to weld back on. It can be done, but it wont be the most fun thing you've done... I just cut out the rust and weld new stuff back over it seal it up the best I can.

Thanks! I can't wait to see finished pics as well, That means that I will have completed it haha. I have this week off so I will be working on this my legacy and my Brat for the majority of it!

Thanks! I wish I had a tubing notcher, I used a grinder, and had to weld some pretty awful gaps We do however have a tubing bender. It's ancient, but it works awesome. It's a crush bender so not the best for high flow applications, but worked out awesome for this. And I love our shop I'm there all weekend every weekend ( I'm at school during the weeks so I have the need to work on my cars during the weekends)

Thanks yours is coming along nicely as well! Today I por15'd even more of the floor sealing it well (i hope) I also added turn signals to my front bumper in the stock location. It tuned out to be kind of a pain because one of the light housings had rusted so I had to break the bulb out of it, and remove the bottom half with pliers. I then took a grinder with a small tip and cleaned out the socket. I was amazed that it worked when I was finished...

About the color I'm going for with mine just a bit darker. It looks very nice. I really like that cluster a lot as well, ours never had the silver trim around it, I may have to look into doing that! Glad to see somebody else fixing one of these up, most people just drive them into the ground. -
Alright so today, I spent all day building bumpers. Both front and rear. Started out by cutting these out with the plasma cutter Made some mounts off from those and attached the upper bar Attached the lower bar And then welded it all together At this point I would have killed for a tubing notcher ( i'm using a grinder) and I still had one to go... Did the same with the rear cut out mounts I made the center sections too long so I had to cut some out and re-notch them after that i welded it all together. I still want to add a section under the tailgate to make it look a little more finished.

We work on a few. All of them high milage and doing fine, one of them approaching 300k. Living in New-England I would suggest taking a really close look at the steel coolant lines that run under the engine. That seems to be a common fail point, and the only issue's I've really seen with them, besides bearing failures on the serpentine belt pulleys. That's about the only thing we have done to them mechanically, besides regular maintenance. They are very good cars, just the rust kills them up here...

My grandfathers did the same thing on the same side, they handle really funny like that ... You have any parts lined up? They are getting hard to find up here :-\

Got all the metal work that was left done. And POR-15 everywhere, the car, floor, my hair, and my arms. I even took the time to re-create the pinch panel at the bottom of the rear quarter. Came out awesome. Another once bad spot Same spot other side.

Nice love both my ea81 wagons some of the best car's I've ever owned. Those and my 92 legacy. I'm not from your area, but my 1982 wagon came from Montana to begin with!

Todays progress first I prepped the floor some more (just sanding off some of the rust) These took forever to make. Came out pretty well. I had to go around the edges with tin snips, cut, bend, weld, and then grind everything down. A test fit. I also spent a lot of time grinding down the underside so I can por-15 that tomorrow. This thing is going to be sealed up well!

I'm pretty sure this is what you are looking for, these are for the new style, but same idea, just different bolt locations. I had to swap out the one on the right for the one on the left when I went to 2.2 heads (the ones for DOHC have a tab for the timing covers) You can see two of the mounting bolts in your pic near the top.

KYB Excel-G vs. Gas-A-Just Question???

I don't have Excel-gs (different than gr2's or gas-a-just) I do have GR2's in an ea81 wagon and brat (for the rears anyway) and I like the way they ride. I also have the gas adjust in my 2x4 ea81 and that one rides stiffer, but it's still not awful, it could also be effected by the fact my 2x4 is a lot lighter in the rear. I'd say you would be fine with the GR2's I drive a lot of dirt roads as well and have never had an issue with them or found them to be annoying over bumps or other obstacles -

My brat has a crown royal bag shift boot you can find the bags for super cheep on ebay. Kind of a bad pic as the brat's in pieces but you get the idea... And my 82 gl wagon has full on plaid interior, but I can't find a pic of it... -
For today I finished up the welding on the drivers side ( I still have a small spot to weld but I ran out of time) I also painted it all with spray balm today to prevent rust until the por-15 comes in. I also welded all my patches from the bottom so they are double welded and now super strong. This week I'll be ordering both fuel filters, headlights and start working on the bumpers and such. Waiting patiently until I return next saturday.

I'm a former owner. Mine had the typical trans issue, I opted for a five speed conversion. It made that car absolutely amazing. I miss it often, and kick myself for selling it. I miss the torque that that thing put down. As long as I took care of it, it never let me down. I had a few issues with a leaky trunk, and a sunroof that had a hard time opening, but other than that I never had an issue after the trans

My dad took this down to the shop last week so I got to spend a long time welding on this today. I also put new rear brakes in it (the wheel cylinders had puked) Now it has a peddle again. I got the passengers side rocker done today, I'm hoping to get the other side done tomorrow and start working on the bumpers maybe PICS!!! Putting the new wheel cylinders in involved new lines so I made some copper/nickel lines for it so they will never have to be replaced again! After all the welding Hole Hole be gone! And her on the lift (the rear is on a jack hence it sitting so high)

Welcome aboard! I live in New England as well, you will not find a good one around here (unless it has started it's life some where other than here) Most of them have rusted away into nothing. Best to look out west, next year I plan on going out west for a good early 80's wagon and make a road trip out of it, but I'm the adventurous type Good luck on your search, you have found the right place to start!

I couldn't agree more, once and a while you will get lucky, most of the time not. I usually avoid cars that have been tinkered on by their owners, you just never know what you are getting into... Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I'm glad all the ea82s are rusted away and gone here, no more reseals, stupid radiator fans, or that cursed timing belt set up At least you have it in good hands now, and it will be back up and running again.

Thanks. This upcoming weekend I should be making some big progress, I'm trailering it to work to finish welding on the underside and get some brakes back in it. I'm hoping to work on the custom bumpers as well. As for the mirrors, I like them a lot too, they are super easy to install (well I had my fenders off already, so that could be a challenge because the bolts like to snap and you have to take the bumper off along with the grill to get the fenders off) the hard part is filling in the doors, that took a good hour or so, but it's well worth it. I got to take it for a quick drive up and down the road ( I live in the middle of nowhere so no one cares if there's a half apart subaru rolling around ) and I already like these so much better then the door mounted ones, it makes me wonder why we never had them? It seems like I can see out of them much better.
