love at first scoob
1982gl4 replied to experience780's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Welcome aboard! Mine was about that rusty when I started with it (it's coming back through again now after about 5 years) I cut out all the rust and welded in new panels I got from http://www.rustrepair.com/index-mf.html I used the rocker panels from a loyal they offer (they are a bit short, but with some trimming you can make them fit, and I got rear arches from them as well, but I can't seem to find the listing for it. I'm putting on another set on my other wagon now, but that has good rear quarters. I would check out the seat mounts closest to the b-piller and repair those if needed, all of mine have been trying to fall through the floor Here's mine after all the work, mine had now front door bottoms, rocker panels, or rear quarters. (I didn't take any before pics, I have no idea why...) And I have build thread in the 80's section where I'm fixing a bunch of rust if you need any pointers let me know, I've fixed a lot of rust on these old things at this point -
The day started by cutting out annoying shapes (very hard with a pair of tin snips I may add) The holes in the doors where then filled, welded, and ground. And now they have some bondo on them, it just needs to be sanded I also picked up an older set of tails for it
-
The wing mirrors came in today! I know some people aren't a big fan, but I really like them. I need to figure out how to plug the holes in my doors now, but a little welding and some bondo should do the trick! Anyway here are the pics

I have a full set of alloy lug nuts and they look to have the same taper as my steel wheel nuts, the only difference I have noticed is they have more of a flat top than the steel wheel nuts and they are black. Last year I ran a set of alloys with steel wheel lugs nuts, and they were fine, never had an issue they didn't loosen up or hurt the wheel.

Looks really cool. I like it low plan on doing this to my ea81 wagon project. Can't wait to see the new wheels on it! Any other plans so far?

Not sure on the turbo 2.2's I've never owned one, but I have heard good things about them, the are by far better than the ea82t. As far as the trans goes the 4eat (auto trans) is really good, by far better than the the three speed autos subaru used to have. My last 92 legacy had 225k on the original drivetrain including the auto trans. The autos in the early legacys also have some cool features, like power mode, and a sort of primitive version of traction control where you can lock it in a specific gear to prevent wheel spin (very nice in the winter) I now have a five speed, and those are very good as well plus it's what I prefer. Both of my first gen legacy's have had over 200k and I have never felt like they were going to leave me anywhere or even break for that matter.
-
My perfect subaru has no rust Everything else can be addressed and changed out. But as others have said, First gen legacys are awesome cars, I have owned everything from my 82 GL wagon, to an 02 Wrx, (and everything in between) and I have to say the early legacy wagon is my favorite for a daily driver. Decent milage, parts availability, reliable, I can get something other than 13" wheels for it, and the interiors are very comfortable, and nicely optioned/finished.

For today I finished welding the drivers floor, and some of the passengers side rocker. I also had some fun with my shifter Look what went missing And the new shorter shifter feels much better. It was like driving a truck before.

When manifolds go bad!

That's what I did as well. Lucky for me my dad runs a small exhaust shop they are pretty easy to bend and flanges are pretty standard as well from what I remember (or if yours are still good you can cut them off and use them). I used an f-150 cat on my ea81 (Two in, one out) came out very well, sounds great too -
I buy a big piece of sheet metal, I think it's like 4x4 feet. And then I cut it using tin snips, grinders, whatever I have. I forget the gauge I get, but it's about the same as the factory Subaru metal. I get it from my local auto parts store (Bond auto). I don't think they have any stores down your way, but you should be able to get some pretty easily.

Pretty much spent the whole day welding on the floor here are pics! Welding along the fuel and brake line's is always kind of sketchy I used a screwdriver in a hole to move them out away from where I was welding worked pretty well, and my floor patch came out awesome! And here's the front passengers side floor

Right now I have 205-55-16's on my white one (that has wrx suspension) I used the same wheel and tire combo last year on the black one with the ob suspension, but it had room to spare. I just had the tires/wheels so I used them. I later switched to the 15's which were taller and that was about as big as I could fit without cutting. I think they were 205-70-15's but I'm not 100% sure, as I have sold the car now and can't go and look from what I can read on my blurry pictures I took of them that's what it looks like

The strut conversion is a great idea. I did the same with winter car for last year it was great for what I used it for ( I can tell you it did not involve doughnuts in a parking lot and drive through snow banks as tall as my car's hood ) This years car I went with a kind of different approach. The skid plate is a great idea too. I used one off from an 80's ea car. With some minor fab work it fitted very nicely. You need fog lights for sure and some mud flaps. I've added a lot of the bits you are talking about, just with the less rare non turbos Here are the pics of my set ups (this years car started as an auto now five speed) And last years with the ob suspension conversion (yes those are purple wheels) I have yet to try the new one in the snow as I'm waiting for it to come.... Last years I had I-pike studded snows and they were great. That car would go anywhere. We drove it on a fourth class road with about a foot of snow on it and made it all the way through. These early legos are so good for the winter. I can't wait to see what you do with this one! I also oil undercoat my cars for the winter, and just in general, VT winters are about the toughest you will find for a car, where you are you won't have to worry about it...you have no idea how lucky you are.

My '92 Landcruiser: Safariwagon-II
1982gl4 replied to TheLoyale's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
Awesome purchase, looks solid. These are a rarity where I live, I have always had a soft spot for them, more so the fj 60's but still that's a nice looking ride. Love the strait 6's as well. I can't wait to see what you do with it! -
Thanks, as funny as it sounds this is the most solid ea81 I have started with. All my others were far worse than this and they came out awesome, so this one should be a really good platform. And I can't wait for the wing mirrors either. I hope they come in before this weekend so I can get them mounted up!!!!! For the wheels I actually have the ones pictured above, but they are staying on my other ea81 wagon. I have a set of the H style wheels, as well as both of these ( I have the white 8 spokes on it now) I think I may switch to the rally wheels (the ones with the egg shaped holes) as I just refinished those last summer.

Thanks it's hard to fit my projects in with school, but I'm doing my best . This car got low 30's pretty easily when my dad and I were driving it around. It's surprisingly peppy too!

Wow looking great. I hope my current wagon project can come out looking this good. Keep up the good work! -
This is my goal pooparu showed this to me a while back and I fell in love with this car I also was able to remove all of the water traps (sound detaining) on the floor

So this weekend I was feeling guilty about this car, as it has been neglected for far to long. I got the car when I was 15 for parts for my brat, but after realizing that it had come from California, and had only been in the north east for a few years, I found the car to be too good to part out. My dad and I drove it around that first summer (working A/C and all!) and then it just kind of sat, and I haven't done anything with it. Being in the north east it has now developed rust, and some other issues. It needs paint (it's pealing from its formal west coast life) This weekend I have been replacing rocker panels and starting to cut out rust that has developed in the floor from sitting. I also have removed all the sound detaining, and found that the rear shock towers are 100% solid My goals for the project are to lower it a bit, make some of my tube bumpers for it. I don't really like the stock FWD bumpers. New paint and some stripes. do up the interior a little. Black out all the chrome. I already purchased some wing mirrors they are on the way! Fix the rust, and leave it fwd with the stock engine. I like the Mpg's it gets and it runs amazingly well with only 178k on her, she's got tons left as is. Here are the pics and progress so far! When I first got it And after sitting in VT for a couple of years.... Really good rear shock towers Cutting Welding/new rockers!!!!

Rally Armor Mudflaps
1982gl4 replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah they are pricy I got these for my lego and I really liked the looks of them. The one's you looked at have a larger decal, I'm assuming that's the only difference in price..... http://www.rallyarmor.com/store/universal-urethane-rally-flap-white-logo-p-273.html -

You just trim them, I didn't have to at all on my 92 lego so you may get lucky and not have to touch them. I would just get their universal kit and get some hardware at a local store to put them on (I just used stainless self tappers) I would also go with the urethane ones, I have the harder ones they offer on my WRX and they rattle around, and drive me crazy, whereas my urethane ones on my lego don't make a sound. My brat will be getting a full set soon enough but I need to get it running before I spend more money on how it looks. -
Last year was bad enough moosens, I had all of that before I did all this work, I can't imagine what it will be like now.... As for updates, I have none. I'm back in school now so progress is going to be slow. But that's not the biggest of my issues. My ecu is messed up, and I have no idea why. It can't get a cam or crank input. And the person I contact for this works monday-friday, guess when I'm at school.... So getting this figured out is going to take a long time....

Haha thanks, I walked away from it a bit, and think I have found the problem. for some reason my Ecu isn't getting a tach in signal. It's not that it doesn't have one it's that it's not reading it. SO I'm going to be contacting Matt at Diyautotunes (for like the millionth time, I feel like I'm nagging the poor guy) , and see what he thinks on the subject. Maybe I can get this figured out.... Turns out the starter issue was a pin that fell out of a connector on the steering column that was an easy fix. And for my wiring I had the two relay out puts mixed up. So those two problems are solved. Now I just have to figure out what the heck is up with the ECU.
-
I'm so sick of this computer crap I've spent all day on it, and still nothing. For some reason I can't get a tach signal to my MS on it's stim. And when I tried on my car something's now wrong with the starting circuit and it won't turn over, on top of that some of my wiring's screwy so one of the relays is not getting power from or too where it should. I'm feeling rather frustrated at this point. I wish I had just cut down a stock harness it would be running by now at least
