  1. +1 to this. Every time I drove mine it put a smile on my face, and money out of my wallet They are beautiful cars. I miss mine, they go really good with a five speed swap
  2. Got some more work done today, it shifts sort of, I have to do a little work and shorten the lower shaft still, but it works. And I started in on the trans mount. I'm going to strengthen it, but it's a start!
  3. I agree with this too, I have talked to the owner of the black brat posted above on another forum, and they said that they would never do it again, it was a really big pain and took a lot of time to get it right. They also are a bit wider so it needed those flares, the gas tank has to be removed and relocated, and you have to build your own strut towers.
  4. Did you have to bend then new mount up a bit so the trans cleared the brats x-member, or did it clear okay being flat? It looks like mine may have to get a bend in it. I most likely will be doing this tomorrow. (if I get motivated)
  5. Not if you are doing it like I am, I will still have the brats stock suspension, but most everything in the front is now ej/xt6 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=117101 Soon I will be upgrading to coil overs in the front, and I'm going to get upgraded sway bars. I don't think that it will handle that badly when it's all put together!
  6. Okay thanks GD, sounds like it would be easier to find another set of 2.5 heads (or an engine) locally, I was just trying to save the customer some $$ by selling them used parts I had kicking around, but swapping the pistons out will be time consuming, and at that point the labor will be way up and it wont matter anyway. If it were my own car I would think about it, but not something someone has to pay for the labor for.
  7. Here is a Brat running a full Wrx running gear including the subframes. http://z15.invisionfree.com/Mv_Brat_Brumby/index.php?showtopic=178&st=0 It's a very cool build!
  8. At work today, my dad, had an outback sedan come in I'm not sure on the year or the trans yet as he isn't home and I haven't talked to him fully about it yet, but I will get that info soon. Anyway it spit the timing tensioner. It has a phase 2 2.5 in it (the one were the spark plugs go in through the valve covers) And it destroyed the heads every valve is bent. I have phase 2 2.2 heads out of an 2001 impreza sitting on my shelf and my dad was wondering if these will fit it? I know that you can make a Frankenmoter out of the phase 1 engines, but will this work with the new style? and will it have the same results high comp and more hp, and if they do fit will the owner have to run higher octane fuel as well? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks in advance! -Shaun
  9. I'm looking at some new ideas for it this week. I want coil-overs in the front because I don't feel like messing with my strut towers and they look like they will fit much better then what I have in there now. I also have been thinking about doing stand alone engine management. I know it's more money, and I know I have the harness already to cut and splice, but it would just be so cool to have it It would give me such added tuning abilities. I have been looking at Megasquirt it seems like a good kit. If anyone has an opinion on these two ideas, I would love to here it!
  10. Thank's it is challenging, I haven't worked on it in a week now because I have been crazy busy, but I have this next week off so I'm hoping I can find a lot of time to work on it. Luckily I go to school about 40 min away from my house so the weekends give me some time. And thanks for the complements about the brat, it's been a long work in progress, I got to drive it some last year on the stock drivetrain, but then I decided I wanted to go in a new direction with it.
  11. That's my thread! Here is one of the links http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118612&page=2 fitting the control arm mounts was pretty easy, I think that it was probably easier then fitting the whole subframe out of an ea82 with some ands some zzz they fit pretty well. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to use for CV's as I'm using a legacy trans, but I'm working out the kinks. If you have any questions about it just ask! As far as struts go I don't think it really matters the stock ones are pretty good in the brat, the fit the tower, and they have a built in hight adjustment, but the ea82 ones are decent as well, I have pounded them off road and they hold up pretty well over time!
  12. You have done such a nice job on picking everything else out for this project so far, i'm sure what ever you do will look great! I just never really liked them on the V-Dubs, I'm just having a hard time picturing them on the car. Keep up the good work!!!!
  13. Never been a big fan of those, I think a small diameter single tube bumper would look awesome in the shape of the original one, you would just have to find some one to bend it, or do yourself, but it's really up to you and your preference, you are the owner after all I have full access to a pipe bender so I just make my own bumpers for my old GL's.
  14. Welcome aboard, that is an awesome looking 82! I have an 82 gl wagon as well, it has been one of the best cars I have ever owned!
  15. I respectfully disagree, Turbo's are surprisingly efficient in stock form, I have gotten up to 29mpg with my (stock) WRX which is far better then the other cars that I have owned, the only downfall is that you have to buy higher octane fuel. Anyway, 92_rugby_subie those wheels look sick! Keep up the good work!
  16. There is a clip that you slide away from the strut that holds the lines in place. They usually can be removed with pliers, but sometimes I have had to take a punch with a hammer to get the really stubborn ones out. Oh and I can't remember if this applies to the older gen of cars, but on the newer ones you have to unbolt the brake lines, or cut the strut (carefully with a hack saw) where the line goes through the strut, as they are trapped because the strut brake line bracket goes all the way around the line so it can't be pulled out even after the clip is removed.
  17. I love that project flight_of_pain great work! As stated about most of us do another subaru engine. Right now I'm putting a 2.5 with 2.2 heads in my Brat (this combo has higher compression, and will fit between the unibody on the Brat) There are a couple known with a WRX swap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enMDCVKVjUc&feature=related And the next one is just crazy, I'm not sure what it's running for a drivetrain, but it's fast This one has a WRX swap http://z15.invisionfree.com/Mv_Brat_Brumby/index.php?showtopic=69 Along with this one http://z15.invisionfree.com/Mv_Brat_Brumby/index.php?showtopic=178
  18. Welcome aboard! Sounds like a great car, would love to see some pictures of it!!!
  19. I can't get over how good it looks! I have the same problem with my Brat the driver's door does not like to close I think it may be the door mechanism at this point, as I have adjusted it 10 times or so by now.
  20. I need to get more pics of it, I have the body a little more together, as these photos were taken when I first got it, I have around 4-5 boxes full of NOS parts mostly to do with the engine, so I'm hoping someday I'll be able to get it on the road, I have driven it, when I rebuilt the brakes, and when I had the engine in the car. It was interesting to say the least. I also have one of the rare dual carb engines that produced 63hp! So I'm hoping I can rebuild that someday. The engines seemed to fail mostly due to sludge problems, and another huge problem area is the front Cv's.
  21. That would be the generator/water pump it has a shaft all the way through it that runs the impeller on the back. And yes they always leak because they have leather seals
  22. I know the people on here are fans of strange and wierd cars (as most of us own them ) This is my 1958 Goliath (the company was partnered with Lloyd and Borgward) The engine is an 1100cc horizontally opposed four cylinder about 46 hp, it's water cooled and front wheel drive and is a four speed with column shift (even if the shifter actually does come out of the dash) It has many features that are far ahead of it's time including rack and pinion steering. It has a very odd front suspension as you can kind of see in one of the photos. This car has 14,000 original miles on it, and is the only Goliath Wagon that I know of in the US to have a sliding canvas roof! The engine was removed and put in another car that was on the road, I have plans to put a Ea81 in it someday, but I have most of the parts to rebuild an original one now. It needs floors, and has some other issues, but after I repaint my 84 GL wagon, and finish the EJ swap in my Brat this is on the list of things to do! Hope you like it!
  23. I had one shipped to my house in Vermont from California for a gen 2 so it is slightly less rare, but I think I ended up paying around 150 for it including shipping, but the thing was mint, and where I live you can not find them (they rusted out before I was even born along with the rest of the cars) -SB
  24. Yeah, they over paid for it, there is no reason you should do that as well.
