advise on rear shocks and front strut.
1982gl4 replied to HATCHY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think some one on here was running VW struts as they fit in the subarus mount pretty easily, but that was to lower the car. It was Pooparu that did it as seen here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98829&highlight=pooparu&page=8 He got more parts later on in the thread to get it back up to a reasonable ride hight again! Anyway, just another idea. -SB -
I'm not worried about the seals right now. I'm using the hubs off from a legacy. This way I have camber adjustment. The struts are pretty tight in the towers but I think I should be able to make them work. Any way still go to know if I ever have to swap them out! -SB
-
I have to lengthen them due to the fact that I have xt6 control arms which are longer, I planed on using my ea82 PS rack from my donor car but the line were way to rusty. As of right now I have an ea81 PS rack in it. Plus with the added length of the struts and spindles I used the angle is way to steep and could not get them to go into the spindle. But hey what's some more fab work on this project! -SB

Just got this done (the five lug swap anyway) tonight. I sill have a bit to do with the suspension and tire rod ends. It's getting a 2.5 frankenmotor and AWD! The suspension is stock in the rear (so far thinking about ea82 coilovers) xt6 rear brakes and hubs the front has xt6 control arms custom ea82 mounts welded to the subframe 1997 Legacy GT front spindles and brakes Front struts are from a 92 Legacy impreza springs ea81 strut mounts ea81 turbo sway bar and more to come!
-
Got the five lug swap done-ish it's back on all four wheels again anyway. I need to figure out tire rod ends now because the ea81 ones no longer work due to a wider track, and the legacy hubs. Right now I kind of have a crazy strut combo going on. It has gen one legacy struts, impreza springs and ea81 mounts. I may have to do some fitment later with a BFH, but I think they will work alright! Also have the new brakes fitted and the look SWEET! I know everyone on here hates pics
-
The project was a success! I'll have to figure out tire rod ends because the legacy hubs don't work with the ea series ends at all, but that's okay I'm just happy I got everything to work so far thanks for the help everyone! -SB

I also agree with MILESFOX, I live in the rust belt at it's worse (Vermont) And I bought a rusted out 82 wagon because I love ea81's and it's the only thing i could find paid $100 for it and now it looks like this It had no rockers or rear quarters or door bottoms I made them all myself. I say go for it I love this kind of thing! There's nothing like the satisfaction of being complemented on you car. and being like "yeah I built that!" -SB

Rarest Old-School Subaru Part or Option?

How about an NOS rear bumper -
EA81 Rear suspension parts 4WD vs 2wd.

I think there are mounts that hold the rear diff hanger in place, you will need those. The front struts are different they have a hight adjustment on them, but you should be able to use the 2x4 ones for now no problem. The rear shocks should be fine as well. And unless the clutch looks good I would get a new one. Also get the linkages and the shift boot that attaches to the tunnel of the car. I'm trying to think of anything else. I have both a 2x4 and a 4x4 wagon so I'm trying to compare them in my head as it's dark and cold outside now and i don't feel like leaving my heated home -SB -
Is tehre anyway to run an $WD trans in a FWD car?
1982gl4 replied to aaronxs400's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Anytime! This is my 1986 brat gl, but pretty much any 4x4 console in an ea81 will look the same. My 82 wagon has the same exact console, it's just tan. -
Looking to buy, what do you think??
1982gl4 replied to noSubiYet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The auto's suck for interstate commuting. (If that's what you are doing) they are only a three speed and get pretty annoying after a while. If you need an Auto an early legacy would be much better for a commute (also much nicer to drive and the early 2.2 engines are indestructible ). Other wise I would look for a five speed. Also I believe the timing belts are do every 60k?? So those may need to be done again if they were done 50k ago. Other than that a muffler is an easy fix (unless the whole exhaust is rotted) and it looks in pretty good shape. I think the price may be a little high, but than again I don't live anywhere near you and don't know how much they go for out your way. -SB -

Here are a couple. My shifting levers are out right now as I'm doing an AWD swap, but I think you can get the idea. I think all you will have to do is get a shift boot (there is an upper one for looks and a lower one to seal up the tunnel), and a 4x4 lever/mount/linkages. The 2x4s also have a place for that second boot -SB -

The entire console is set up differently on a 2x4. And if you are getting it out of an ea82 style car the whole thing will be different. From my brochures it looks like the ea81 2x4's have a separate console that sticks up a bit just for the Autos. It looks like you could remove that and just get a 2x4 five speed shift boot and it would be ok. Also there is a plate behind the shift console where the 4x4 gear select goes that will have to be replaced with one for a 4x4. That is if you are using a linkage off an ea81. I have no idea if the ea82 shift linkage will fit the same. Also be warned that the 2x4 and 4x4 ea81's had a different gas tank and it will have to be swapped out to fit the rear diff! (And no and ea82 one doesn't fit, I've been down that road myself:rolleyes:) I hope that info makes sense?? -SB -
You will get it right all of our projects have issues at first I'm running 205/55R16's on it right now. They aren't enormous or anything, but they do keep it from looking goofy with the taller stance. This is how close they are to the wheel well. I'm using the 97 ob springs in the rear (I think I had to space the mount in the rear so the threads would grab using a couple of washers) with the 92 legacy springs in the front (the ob ones I had were broken) I would think that the top hats would fit fine on the forester springs/struts, but I don't know for sure.
-
That's how I rock my 92! Caster off. The OB's do have different trailing arm mounts that will drop them down and correct this a bit. But I have had no issues with mine. And I would think that the top hats off you early lego struts should work just fine. I have them on my 97 outback struts and everything went together great! And here is mine after some bigger tires and the lift! -SB

They also came in a few Tercel 4x4 wagons.

Question on building new exhaust for EA81
1982gl4 replied to aaronxs400's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry it took me so long to get these, The cars kind of in a shed right now and behind some stuff you know how it is Anyway this is what I did (my dad has a pipe bender at his shop so that made it easy!) It sounds really good too! -
Whats broke on your subaru lately.
1982gl4 replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had my radiator hose explode on my way to get my hair cut. I thought something was up when I lost the heat, sure enough the temp gage started to creep up and then my car was surrounded in a steamy not so goodness. With a gallon of coolant and a screwdriver I got her home. All new hoses and clamps were put on the next day -

if it's an ea81 ( I think you have an ea81), and you did the ea82 five speed D/R conversion you could still just run the front half of the drive shaft and you would have a much better five speed gear ratio as well. it would be more complicated if you used a 4speed D/R as they have a one piece drive shaft. -SB -
There should be a silver tag right on the rear diff (if it hasn't fallen off) that will say LSD on it or it will give you a gear ratio. Also welcome aboard I also live in VT! Just north of Montpelier!
-
Control arms in Also you do not have to use the EA82 radius arms the EA81's fit just fine
-
Welcome aboard! You will fall in love with subarus! This forum is amazing you will find all kinds of info and the people are awesome! -SB

The gaskets where the exhaust mounts to the cylinder heads fall apart fairly often. I know I've changed mine a bunch of times.
