Trust me it's not worth it! I found a ea81t with the whole harness and decided to put it in my brat, after a year of chancing down wiring "issues" and rebuilding the motor, I gave up. I would suggest doing a weber swap, or if you want bigger power gains (way more than the stock turbo) for less money do an EJ swap. They are also way more reliable than the ea81t and get better fuel economy! just my .02. Even if your's came with a turbo originally, and it is carbed now it probably has the normal aspirated ea81 heads and block, which are entirely different from the ea81t. And you can't put the factory turbo fuel injection on that engine.

Welcome aboard always nice to see another person with older and newer gen. cars! -
I agree! I had a 97 coupe and it was a pain to put people in! I just recently upgraded to a 2002 WRX sedan

You will also need a 4x4 gas tank for the ea81 unless you plan on lifting it... the 2x4 gas tank does not have the spot for the rear diff to set into it unfortunately, or mine would have been a 4x4 a long time ago.

Looks good! I love the gen 2 lego wagons!
-
Get all the parts for the ea81 to make it 4x4 and put the five speed dr out of the one you just got in it (Just my .02) I like the second gens much better, and one with one of the five speed dr is awesome! Or you could pick up an ea81 for cheep and drop it into the car you just got to make it a good driver until you feel like EJing it.

If I were doing a lot of interstate driving I would get an EJ car, the early Legacys are pretty much bullet proof as 92_rugby_subie has already stated, they go forever. I too love the old wagons, I own an 1982 but the are not good interstate cars, they are slow and aren't geared correctly for modern-day traffic with the stock 4 speed. -
1982 GL fender on 1984?
1982gl4 replied to CoolestDudeEver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah the 1982 fenders have the antenna on the drives side and 83 up is on the passengers side. It should fit the car fine except for that. -
First of all I have seen your hatch and that thing is sweet!!!! It's been quite an inspiration for my brat project! I'm actually starting one of these builds this week in my automotive engines class! I have my 2.5 block which is getting all new bearings, rings, gaskets, ect... I got given a 1997 brighton 1.8 so I'm using the heads off from that from what I've read they're the same?? I'm using a Lego five speed behind it I figured that the ea81 trans would turn to shrapnel with that in front of it, plus I need another gear bad! I'll try to take pictures as I go along!

The only issue I really had was I had to make a panel that goes form the back side of the rocker to the floor because that was missing as well. also you may have to remove the doors and fenders to make them properly fit. Also make sure your doors shut well before they are attached to the car because I have a little issue with one of the doors shutting hard. Even though it's a lot of work, it is well worth it, It's sooo much better than making your own. In fact i just ordered another set of the rockers they offer to put on my 84!!!

Bringing home a new one...

Yes it does flip up there is a motor on a bracket behind the bumper that runs it! You could cut a hole in the grill you have zzz, or find a grill with the hole in it when you find the third eye assembly. They seem most frequent on the 1982 Gl 4x4s they may have come on the years previous to 1982 but I have never owned one so I have no idea. A switch runs it, it's located in the panel that's under the steering wheel with those holes kind of precut into it. -

It peps it up a little bit I wouldn't say its "fast" or anything but it adds a few hp and on a car with 72hp stock, it makes a difference. I don't have any under side shots of the exhaust but I can get some (yes it still has a converter) but the link below has some pics of where it exits, and I also had the same shop do the green Impreza in the album. I think the pics are on the third or fourth page if you are looking at all of my photos. http://s1207.photobucket.com/home/1982gl4/index -

It does give better visibility, and it looks cool, from the factory it was only wired up to work on high beam (the way mine still is) but you could wire it up so it would work anytime. And my .02 keep it stock you won't be disappointed with it. My 82 wagon is pretty much stock with the exception of a weber and a full custom exhaust (built by professionals not myself), I have never owned a more reliable automobile -
Looks pretty good for a 1983! Wicked low miles too

That thing is sweet! I love the fwds I have an 84 gl wagon with a five speed, gets great milage! I just sent one to the crusher with that steering wheel wish I had kept more parts off from it... Anyway here is a picture of the third eye! -
Q's about 12 spoke alloys 4 hole 13"
1982gl4 replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have never seen a set of those! I would go for clear coat just to protect them in general, but for winter absolutely! That will also solve your flat black issue if you want gloss that is. -Cheers -
I have used the rear wheel arches and rocker panels on my 82 wagon! With a little cutting, a lot of welding, some filler and paint I think they fit pretty well! Much better than making your own (which I have also done) And the prices are pretty good as well. Here's the best pic I have of the work I did ( I used the Loyale rocker panels )

83' GL Sedan-"new" subie owner
1982gl4 replied to kfitz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The 83 doesn't have a timing chain or belt! The motor you have should be the EA81 witch if you don't over heat it and keep clean oil in it will last pretty much forever I have owned several of these old subarus and I keep coming back to them! I don't think you will be disappointed with your purchase, welcome aboard!
