  1. Put the new rear arch seals in and fixed the rear arch rust. Luckily I caught it before it was rusted badly. The paint had started to peal and it was just surface rust. A little time with a grinder and por15 it should be good for a while now! I need to touch up with a little white paint but that can wait. at least i don't have rust creeping in on my rear quarters.
  2. Installed a new pcv, changed the oil, (up to 209k now!) and took it to boston last weekend to see a show. The Car went great as always 27mpg at 75mph and super high rpm due to the 4.11's. Oil consumption seems to be way down with the new pcv. I also repainted the hatch for the third time this year, the paint keeps falling off when I wash it. I took it back down to metal and washed it with dawn and scotch bright pad, and used different paint. I also used an adhesion promoter and cleared it when I was all done. It seemed to do the trick this time as it didn't fall off it when I washed it today. I also was able to order rear quarter seals that go around the wheel arches, mine are starting to fall off, although they can hold the salt in place, they keep the edges from getting sand blasted all winter long. I'll be putting those on after I do a little bit of rust work, the paint has started pealing back there as well now.
  3. Just put some new bearings in it, it will be fine Looks like a good start! I really liked what you did with your last wagon, can't wait to see how this one turns out!
  4. Thanks man! I'm loving the lights/bar already. I'm in the Northeast, Vermont to be exact.
  5. Thanks guys, scooner I can't really add more projectors into the headlights without a lot more work, plus I'm happy with the way they are now, it was a lot of work just to get the single projectors in them! rrgrr, I'm not really feeling the teeth Glad you like the light bar! Tonight I hooked up my hellas, and got them all working. We also got a new (really expensive) headlight aimer at work today, so I put that together during business hours and got to use it on my car tonight so I could learn how to use it. I aimed the two center ones as high beams, and the outers as low beams. I tested them out on the way home (when there was no oncoming traffic) They are super bright, so much better than the old hellas I had. Infact I'm glad my sister smashed them off my car, it turned out for the best!
  6. Brush guard looks great! I just fabricated up a light bar for my legacy. Making them bolt on does add a lot of complications, but it is very worth it.
  7. Thanks! I'm luck as I don't have to convince anyone to keep mine! I had a lifted 92 legacy, I really liked that car, but this one matches what I do much better. I mainly use it just go to work, and on the occasional road trip.Got my light bar finished and installed tonight! I'm super happy with the way it came out. It's so much better than the old mount set up I had. I've wanted to make this light bar for as long as I've owned the car. I'm running out of things to do to it! Here are some pics! I still need to hook up the center too lights, and aim them, but I should be able to get that done tomorrow.
  8. Started building my light bar last night. I attached it to the front tow hooks by welding a small bracket onto them, and the top is bolted to the bumper below the grill. I still have to add a lower bar, and drill all the holes for the light mounts, but when I'm finished it should be able to fit 6 hellas. I'm only doing four right now, but I have room to grow if need be! Some pics of the progress so far. Top light mounts Where the top brackets bolt to Welded up, and that other bar, is the lower one which I will hopefully be fitting tomorrow, than it should be ready for paint/ drill holes for the light mounts.
  9. 4 new hellas on the way. When they come in I'll be making a light bar!
  10. Did some more welding on this today. most of it on the drivers side of the bay is finished at this point. Up next I need to figure out a way to hide a washer jug like I did on my wagon, than I can finish up the passenger's side, and spend hours grinding all the welds down. Progress is being made!
  11. So my sister backed into this yesterday. Luckily it just smashed my hellas off it. I'm think I'm going to make light bar, and mount 4 of them this time around in a triangle patter /\. Now I might have a reason to make that light bar I've been wanting. Also thinking about going yellow lenses, any one have experience with them?
  12. Did some stuff to this tonight. Washed another layer of salt off the poor thing for starters. I than removed the rest of the ac as I had already removed the condenser during an emergency repair in North Carolina this fall when my cooling fans died (it has never had a charge in it since i have owned it, and the compressor was no good) so that is gone. And I'm trying out a new set of shoes. I think it looks pretty good with them! Took a while to clean them up from the brake dust that was stuck to them. Mothers aluminum polish worked wonders. before after
  13. Spent this afternoon welding up some on the strut towers. I cut all out all the rusty areas in the bay well. I was making great progress until I ran out of welding wire. I'll get some more at work tomorrow. Progress has been kind of slow on this as I have been tearing down an engine to send out to have the crank turned for one of my other projects, but I really want to start focusing on this heavily again!
  14. From what I have gathered on mybratbrumby It's factory, I think it's a Uk model. They had a "Brat" package for their pickups that came with decals, as their trucks didn't come with any from the factory, and they also came with light guards in both the front and rear.
  15. I knew the trans was bad when I got it, so that was no surprise. Keep in mind I only had it about a summer, it was never anything huge, but it was a little disappointing getting in it and finding something else broken. The power antenna was the first to have issues, the drivers seat belt stopped working, power windows, the trunk gathered a lot of water, the speedometer drive liked to break too. I was very happy to have a parts car. Mechanically it was pretty good. I had some trouble with the IAC, and it fowled a new set of plugs I put in it once, but that was about it. Never had trouble with the wheel bearings (I knew it was a problem so I kept a close eye on them), but it only had 55k on it. I also had problems with the five speed swap I ended up putting a weak clutch in it the first time around, i'm not blaming that on the car, it was just annoying to have to do it again as it shredded the clutch in about a week. Every now and then I found my self looking on craigslist looking for one again, they are super fun unique cars, but I wouldn't want one as my only car. I'm much happier with my 1991 Legacy Sports Sedan (also not an only car, very far from it)
  16. I agree with the statement above, I had an svx a few years ago. I swapped a five speed into it and it was amazingly fast and super fun. But there was always something broken. It's not something I would used as an only car, or a daily driver, its what I would call a pleasure car.
  17. I've been thinking that over as well for my 92, but its reliable, and I have soooooooooo many projects already....
  18. The hood is gone along with the car! I sold the 97.... I ended up having to repaint my tailgate as all the paint fell off about a week after I did it. So now it should be good (fingers crossed) I also cleaned it inside and out. I also touched up around the wheel wells with fluid film, and a few rust spots that started on the drivers front fender. The left rear quarter has started to show a few rust bubbles so I need to touch that up next. I also took the plastic out of the rear and fluid filmed the rear quarters from the inside. Trying to keep this thing in decent shape is starting to become harder than it used to be.
  19. I've been using fluid film for 3 years. It seems to working well. I try to keep my car clean, but that's super hard where I live this time of year. If you can avoid driving it after a storm for a couple days that will help. Going around and touching up rust spots every year will help it last a lot longer. if you drive your old subaru in the salt it will eventually rust. That's why I have a legacy to suck up the salt. The best rust protection is a winter beater....
  20. And I thought those wheels looked good on your wagon As far as the wagon with the BMW badges, I remember it being on E-bay a few years back. I don't remember the reasoning behind the badges, but I do remember the car was pretty much stock except for badges, and paint.....
  21. I had one of these break like two weeks ago. But I work at a shop so getting them out is fairly easy for me.I would try vice grips first and work up from there. Like 987687 said I welded a nut to the top of it, and used heat as I worked it in and out. Unfortunately it was super stuck, and I couldn't get it to budge with normal hand tools. We ended up heating it one last time and using a 3/8 impact on it and it came right out. And IIRC those bolts are smaller 6x1.0 maybe. I remove the coolant cross overs because the metal hose that goes from the water pump to the heatercore have been rusting out and spraying coolant everwhere. I've changed probably 5 of them now got to love salt.
  22. It sounds like this car has had its share of bad luck for sure. I'd say keep it brown, I really do like that color on pretty much any old subaru. Are you planing on painting the whole car, or just the sections that need it? Maaco should be able to a pretty good job at matching it. They did one of my friends saabs and it came out really well, and another friend had his S-10 done there as well. As far as the jambs go, the local shops near me can mix up custom spray cans, usually $20 each. They tend to be a little flat, but for the jambs they would look fine.
