5sp d/r disassembly - question
b88185 replied to b88185's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Trans is almost back together. Working on getting all the rear case bits and pieces back in their correct spots. Could anybody scan the page in the manual with this area in it? Been working from an XT manual that does not have all the D/R detail. Lots of little springs and balls here... Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
5sp d/r disassembly - question

Thanks guys, will have to give that a shot. Had some trouble with the similar shifter shaft pin situation - got the pin out, parts are still corroded together. Hopefully this one works a bit better. -
I'm taking apart a 5sp d/r tranny to reseal and then drop into my '86 GL wagon. Got the rear housing off and now trying to split the forward halves. Do I need to drive the pin out of the high/low selector shaft here in order to get them apart? They're hung up on something but not sure what. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

May have to take you up on that transmission...

Drained the oil a while back and ran it on an ATF/oil mix to see if that helped and it didn't. Back on normal oil now and still making noise. There was definitely some metal on the magnetic drain plug, guessing that's not a good sign. If it is a mainshaft bearing failing would it be worth replacing that rather than sourcing another used tranny?

And it's got 230,000mi on what I'm assuming is the original trans

My transmission sounds like it's on the way out - second gear makes loud clattering noises under load until the engine/trans are warm, and 4th-5th both make a lot of gear and/or bearing noise (sounds like a jet engine). Is this something that sounds repairable to you guys or should I just drop in a new old unit? 1985 GL wagon, 5sp D/R

Tom, congrats on the new add to the collection! Cool stuff. Also, add me to the list of people that wouldn't mind taking that bumper off your hands. I could trade you some cash or whatever for it. Ben

That's a KTM 620 enduro stuffed sideways and sticking out the back. Did 60-80mi like that. -

I can't even keep track of what goes on in the DI thread, much less that one and this one!! Fox, I'm planning on getting started with the head gasket replacement Friday night and finishing it up on Saturday (or sunday if it takes longer than expected). I'd like to pull the wagon into the shop tonight or tomorrow night - is there room right now? -
It hasn't overheated recently. Had a couple episodes of it a month and a half back, but replacing the thermostat (it was sticking) fixed it. It doesn't overheat at all now (at least not on the gauge). Just smoking and frothy/gunky coolant. I wouldn't mind doing an EJ swap, but would have to find an engine. If I can make it for two weeks I'd be up for swapping gaskets weekend after next, if you're down.

I think I've got a blown head gasket on my '86 EA82 wagon. Frothy, bubbling coolant with brown gunk in it plus white smoke from the exhaust. Power seems fine, but it does idle pretty rough. Now for the questions: -Could it be anything other than the HG's? -Should I stop driving it right away, or would it be OK to keep using it for a while? It's my daily driver unfortunately. -Is there a good chance my head(s) are already done for, or can I just swap out the gaskets and be OK?

I've seen a few posts on here mentioning adapters to go from acorn to ball, are they similar to these VW adapters? http://www.jbugs.com/store/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=JBUGS&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=9508&utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase&cvsfa=2714&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=39353038 If not, where could I find some?

Good catch.

Some Hondas use ball lugs, does anybody know if they will work with Pug alloys? They're pretty inexpensive and seem to have similar geometry: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/20-ACURA-MDX-RDX-SLX-OEM-FACTORY-STYLE-BALL-LUG-NUTS-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5ad6768314QQitemZ390145147668QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_3010wt_1165 Product Description: A set of 20 brand new chrome lug nuts for your factory Acura/Honda wheels. Should've looked here first I guess: http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/wheels/pugdiffs.jpg http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/wheels/pugnuts.jpg

Do steel and alloy pug wheels use the same lugs, or will steels take standard lugs?
-
Did a little searching on this topic and couldn't find anything. Is there someplace that will sell you just the lugs for the peugeot wheels?

EA82 Weber Adapter and Coolant
b88185 replied to b88185's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Took the hose from the carb coolant outlet and plugged it - turned the engine over a couple times w/out carb or adapter on and coolant bubbled out of the opening even without the hose. So it looks like the hose was not the coolant supply? New gaskets are in and don't leak air, but I can't tell if it's burning coolant anymore or not. The cold weather here means there's water vapor coming out the tailpipe most of the time regardless!
