  1. @Loyale 2.7 turbo, thanks for the brochure and pics in general.
  2. Hi, a friend owns an Outback at 171,000 miles...someone recently told him that he can get a specialized airfilter sytem that will boost horsepower while reducing gas mileage ....maybe he was referring to the Cone Air Filter stuff?? He has tried to find one specific to Subaru but all in vain, all other makes apart from Subaru are available. He asked me if anyone here has knowledge ofbwhere to get one or if anyones here makes one. Thanks!
  3. thanks for the updates, wont be around...still overseas with my cousin..retrun date unknown.

  4. Welcome aboard...your local junkyards are the best bet for decent, cheap used BRAT parts...especially if your area is not prone to vehicular rust issues.Otherwsie you may have to go a bit further.Best of luck with your most recent Subaru!
  5. Just bought my neighbors 97 Legacy station wagon with a decent body and interior...power options all work as they should, auto tranny and AWD()...270,000 miles on it. Main reason he sold it was beacuse it starts but engine would only run if your foot was on the gas pedal.Once you take your foot off the pedal, engine dies.He had changed the spark plugs thinking it would fix the problem(as advised by his mechanic).Trying to see if it is a cheap fix or should I just go ahead and swap engines?Trying to make this my reguar winter ride.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.
  6. Thanks for the heads up..will look 'em up then contact 'em.
  7. I know that this has been done successfully....wondering if any board member on the East Coast can assist with this...I have my eye on a vanagon Syncro and would like to do an SVX conversion...can source a low mileage engine+wiring harness+ECU on my own...just need some expertise on how to do it..or someone to do the whole project for me...if no one available on my side of the USA...can ship it wherever(within the continental US)and get it done for reasonable price.
  8. '98 Legacy L Wagon(AWD and 5-speed)...difficulty steering to the right more than to the left...recently started to notice a small puddle on the ground if parked for over two days at same spot...power steering fluid seems to be low...every time I add like half a small bottle, the problem goes away...have searched to see where the leak has sprung...the container that holds it(the pump?)...all the lines seem intact...cannot seem to find the leak?!
  9. Thanks a lot for all the useful info(I hope that the main SUBARU PLANT guys in Japan or here in the US get to visit this site)...will be posting some more info here, once I obtain the car and as I make progress with the work...will definitely still need help and advise.
  10. I have seen a lot about EA to EJ swaps but couldnt find a thread to completely provide the answer.Just wondering how a pushbutton Loyale tranny from '90-'94 would hold up against a much higher powered engine like the WRX...without causing the so called "tranny grenade".Will soon have access to an 88 wagon and had a project in mind...of course going the EJ direction while ditching the D/R tranny(from what I understand, its a weaker tranny for higher powered engines).
  11. Subaru Reworks Its 21-Year-Old Boxer Engine (From Articlee In New York Times,September 24th 2010 edition) The new Subaru engines are coming in the same sizes as the old ones, but the United States will get only the 2.5 liter. Now that Subaru’s engine is old enough to drink, the automaker has taken steps to make it less thirsty. Subaru announced on Thursday that it has redesigned the horizontally opposed 4-cylinder boxer engine that has been a key component of its vehicles for many years. This reworking marks the first substantial change to the engine since the current version was introduced in 1989. Horizontally opposed engines incorporate two banks of cylinders. But unlike most other engines, where the two banks rise to form a V, the cylinders of a horizontally opposed engine lie flat on each side of the crankshaft. When the pistons move they push out to either side, like the punches of a boxer -– hence the “boxer” name. Because a boxer engine is flatter than a conventional design, the vehicle’s center of gravity can be lowered -– a factor in vehicle handling. Like the current Subaru engines, the new dual overhead cam engine will be built in 2-liter and 2.5-liter versions. But only the 2.5-liter will be available in American-market vehicles. The power plant’s most significant new feature is a lengthening of the crankshaft stroke and a reduction in the size of the cylinder bores. While the overall displacement is virtually the same as that of the earlier engine, the move to a longer stroke reportedly improves combustion efficiency and fuel economy, while generating more low-speed torque. Other changes include revised intake ports, variable valve timing and the implementation of exhaust gas recirculation for combustion chamber cooling. An overall reduction in the weight of moving parts contributes to fuel efficiency Dominick Infante, a Subaru spokesman, said that the first application of the new engine design in the United States would be in the 2011 Subaru Forester. In that vehicle, the engine is rated at 170 horsepower, which is the same output as the previous engine. However, fuel economy has improved by 1 m.p.g. to 21 city/27 highway. Emissions were said to be reduced as well.
  12. Good points all well taken and opinions much respected...keep them coming,am sure there will be some middle ground...will talk to the other member and see what we can come up with...he is currently travelling abroad.Am still researching on the Baja rally.I believe that there were some awesome pictures here from Iceland when I first joined the board, anyone know/is in touch with that specific member?I hear that they have an awesome rally there too.Cheers, for all your $0.02.
  13. Trying to get my 87 RX going before the snow gets here:grin:...someone local has a totalled 89 RX that has been sitting in their garage for a few years. The odometer says 72,xxx miles,so I guess its a safe bet to try stick with the EA82T as I await an EJ swap after the winter.Question...is the engine a direct fit or did SUBARU make any changes that would affect/hinder that switch? And what to change or service in an engine that has been sitting for close to 4 years...if a direct fit? Thanks.
  14....''What he said. Besides with the unstable governments in Africa, I have no desire to go there for any reason''...:-\:-\ Personal opinion well respected...still counting on your moral support and cheers. Not to go too much down the memory lane and into AFRICAN history but just a brief outlook on how much the rally means to some of us.By the way,East Africa has maintained lots of stability after the much needed unhoisting of the Union Jack in the very early sixties. This rally has been running consistently and annually since 1953(was known then as the Coronation Rally later to be known as East African Safari Rally). Now they have the regular Safari Rally and the Classic Safari Rally...the latter being strictly for cars made before 1975.The founder,Englishman ERIC 'BWANA' CECIL actually just made his FINAL victory a few days ago,in KENYA where he chose to live...may he R.I.P. For some of us,this was a once a year event that we looked forward to...comparable to something like the SuperBowl...only that it lasted a few days around EASTER time.We had a chance to watch the SUBARU rallying greats such as MIKE KIRKLAND(who chose to settle in KENYA too),SHEKAR MEHTA...and the likes...at a time when SUBARU decided to introduce the RX to combat AUDI which had been running the 1.8T QUATTRO...while TOYOTA had been running the twin cam ALL TRAC CELICA...MAZDA had the 1.8 GTX....etc. Perhaps I may never achieve my team USMB dream at the rally, but it is still my intention to invite some willing USMB members who wanna test their rallying skills in more challenging conditions, and participate in some of the local rally events.
  15. Just a wild thought.....can enter as Team USMB.....for all the real rally drivers out there. The next one is a year away,we can get a couple of EA81s for the Classic Rally and then EA82s and EJs for the regular 4-5 day Rally...hopefully we can do this.(I know another USMB member from Baltimore,MD who is also interested). Some of us are originally native to the region so can easily work out details such as on the ground logistics like acqusition of vehicles(rather than shipping cars across the globe just for the rally),shops/garages for any mods, tools, work needed, leisure, the do's and dont's...etc.Best part is the safari part.In response to the the many questions that may arise like funding(in response to TURBONE below),we can register a local(citizen)as the main driver and have one of us(non locals)as navigator also known as co-driver(the rest as service crew...aka the pitcrew at the track races). This makes it cheaper for registration purposes since they have different prices for local and international entries. The other USMB member I mentioned here owns a Tours and Travel Company in Kenya and would be willing to work out the travel logistics at a possible discounted price and would help with accommodation arrangements. If we do different rallies, then other drivers get to take the main drivers slot...it doesnt have to be the Safari Rally, could be any one of the other foreign rallies.I chose the Safari Rally due to obvious bias(thats my place of origin)and also because it is one of the most gruelling rallies of all time...pushing machines to the limit. We can do this for the rally in Iceland, and other parts of Europe.By the way,I do have a family too...may the real rally drivers out there stand up?!
  16. Do you by any chance have the EA8T starter and bracket that holds up the AC Compressor?

  17. Sorry, got no pics. The one that the AC Compressor is bolted to,I also need the starter.Let me know cost plus shipping and will get the money to you by next Saturday latest(the 9th of Oct). Thanks again.

  18. The bracket that holds the AC Compressor...if you still have it,how much plus shipping to Baltimore,MD 21215?Thanks.Throw in the starter too,and can get you some money by end of week via whatever means preffered including paypal.Cannot recive PM's yet for some reason, just "conversation" messages.

  19. Got your message but am currently travelling abroad on business, will be back by the 19th or 20th of this month.I have your number and will call you then if car is not sold yet.I sincerely hope that someone gets this soonest.

  20. yes I am keeping the car to do a swap or whatever...and the car has to be moved from off the street right outside the garage due to city regulations...since it has no tags...sorry,another board member who had shown interest in the engine is coming up to pull the same engine that we were discussing...they committed to it.

  21. Yes there is a lift, tools and hoist at the garage,I will be travelling abroad in the next few days...maybe can do this some other time. The car needs to be moved by the thuis weekend the 31st.If you dont get it by then, will keep you posted.Cheers!

  22. We dumped the papers with other stuff while cleaning out the garage...I sincerely have no reason to try con you...if you want it for free, come pull it yourself, willing to provide you with the tools and space at the garage where the car is located...will be moving it this coming Saturday July the 31st.
