When you put that much money in an older car, make sure that you keep all of the receipts and take pictures. If your car is in an accident, the insurance company (yours or the other guys) will total the car out at kbb prices. Your receipts can be added on to that price. Unfortunately, the time that you put in, is not included. A mechanic's time can be included. Routine maintenance is, also, not included, but those receipts go toward proving that the car was well maintained. The only other thing that you can do, that I know of, is to get the car appraised. That's usually done by recognized car clubs. You could also enter it in some car shows. I know all of this because I ended up suing over an old TR4 that I had restored. It was totaled in a rear end collision and the insurance company offered me $500. We ended up in court with pictures and receipts and the judge awarded $4000. He said that he felt it was probably worth more and could have awarded more if I had an appraisal. Hope that helps.

Weird road noise...makes me worry
buzzcon replied to buzzcon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay, I'll check it when it gets light out, well when I finally get up. Hope that's the problem. It'd sure be nice if it was that easy...Thanks ~Myles~ -
My wife's 86 gl sedan, Annie, is making some weird sounds. I've been driving her, while working on the wagon and now she wants her fair share of attention. :-\ When I'm driving, the right rear coilovers squeak. If I hit a bump, there's a deep clunk that comes from the same area. The coilover seems to be working fine, but the noise that eminates from that area has me worried. Any ideas of what I might be looking for? Thanks ~Myles~

My alarm system quit working, along with my foglights, last summer. I tried to track the problem down, when I have time or when I'm not fixing something else. Never found the problem, though. So, yesterday I'm driving to work and my alarm goes off! I pulled over to the side of the road, turned the alarm off, the doors locked and my foglights started working. Aint life Grand!

I just took the car out for a ride and when I step on the gas, it seems more like an exhaust leak. The pitch of the sound doesn't change, when the turbo spools up, it just sounds faster, as the engine picks up rpms. It is not the same sound I had with my old turbo; not that metallic sound. I, also, looked at my old turbo and the impeller doesn't spin smoothly, so it was definitely on the way out. I don't know enough about turbos to know why the boost is different between the two. Maybe someone else will share their knowledge on that. If you find out anything let me know, but it's sounding more like an exhaust problem to me. ~Myles~ -
I can't seem to win, on this problem. This was my original post: "When the turbo kicks in, on my 88, ea82t wagon, it sounds like someone put a playing card on a bicycle wheel. It has kind of gradually came on and gets louder everyday. Any ideas? How bad is this? I would really be happy if someone said "just tighten up that thingamajiggy and it'll be fine" and that was really true." Everyone agreed that it was my turbo. I bought a turbo from a member, but the shaft had too much play in it, so I sent it back. I bought another one from another member and installed it. The noise is STILL there and now it only puts out 5lbs. of boost; the old one put out 7lbs. I don't know where to look. Can a leak in the exhaust manifold make that sort of noise? My car's been down since the 2nd of November. It only sounds like that when it spools up, so it keeps sounding like the turbo. The member I bought the turbo from had it on his car, with no problems, so I doubt that it's bad. Help Thanks ~Myles~

Advice on buying an ’85 Subaru GL Sedan
buzzcon replied to mark bellhorn's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My wife has an '86 gl sedan, with 110,000 miles on it and it runs great. The only thing I've had to do with it is replace the timing belts and it needs a new radiator. As far as power is concerned, it's a sube. Mine's a 5 speed turbo and it still doesn't have any power. More than the automatic, but that's still not saying much. It's a 23 year old car. If you can get it for $700 or so, you're probably doing good, IF it's rust free and running good. You can't hardly get a car that's in running condition for much less. -
Wheel Bearing Job Parts List Help
buzzcon replied to cloudbrk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, this a a good deal, but as to your other question, I"m not sure. I haven't gotten mine yet, but I couldn't pass this up. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-FT-Wheel-Bearing-Kit-85-94-Loyale_W0QQitemZ150183935349QQihZ005QQcategoryZ42609QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -
I'm still dealing with this turbo issue. I finally got this one from Rob but it has too much shaft play, so I'm back to square one! I haven't driven my car since you guys pointed out what should've been the obvious, to me. So if anyone has a good (affordable) turbo, let me know. Thanks ~Myles~

Can I Cry Now?? Is It Time 2 Give Up??
buzzcon replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Taking a screwdriver to the floorboards isn't a bad idea. When they 1st started car inspections in St. Louis, back in the late 60's, they didn't do body inspections, still don't as far as I know. My Aunts sister-in-law, rushed her kids out to her husbands fishing wagon, which had passed inspection 2 weeks before and headed out on I 55. No seatbelt laws, in fact no seat belts, in a lot of cars. Her 3 year old jumped off the back seat and fell thru the floorboard. He was killed instantly, by the undercarriage of the car. I was pretty young at the time, but I remember how it changed what we did in the rear seat of the car. From then on we sat quietly. Opt for safety and don't allow children in the car, unlesss you're sure the rear floorboards are safe. Bucky is one of my favorite cars:-\ I'm so sorry. I'll cry with you. ~ Connie ~ ~The Con of Buzzcon~
