  1. Sorry I haven't thanked you guys for your advice. I got busy with the hoses and you know, but anyhow thanks. I finally got it done. I took the innercooler off to get to the turbo, the turbo off to get to the hoses and the chin bones connected to the ankle bone and you know the rest of that song. I replaced all of the hoses and I wrapped them with aircraft heat tape and put thermotech alluminum sleeves over it. That should hold up for a while. It's up and running better than ever. I found some loose intake bolts, so tightening them up cured some problems. So, I guess it was worth it. Even though it's a PITA, pulling the turbo is the best way to go. Thanks again...
  2. The coolant hose under the turbo, in my 88gl wagon, is leaking. What's the best way to get to it? It looks like a real PITA! It's the one that is on the left side of the engine and goes directly under the turbo.
  3. Got the timing belts on, and it started right up. No problems. I reinstalled the side timing coverings and left the center one off. It'll be an easy deal next time. Thanks for your help. I looked at the 88 gl xt. I have a feeling that it was one of the hurricane Katrina cars. I know it has been submerged and I heard they were selling those cars out west. So, I'm still looking.
  4. Thanks a lot. I was working on it, but it got dark and really cold, so I'll go back after it tomorrow. I appreciate the help. I'm going to look at an '88 gl xt, 5 speed, fwd tomorrow, too. It sounds like a sweet deal. Any advice on it. I've never driven one before, but I love my '86 gl, so becoming a total subie family's okay by me. The '86 is my wife's and it's an automatic, but it's been good to us. We started out looking for a brat and had no luck there, but hope springs eternal.
  5. Okay, I'm replacing the timing belts. You were right the driver belt was broke. When I time this, is the drilled mark on the cam at 12 o'clock high. There are three lines on the flywheel; is it the center line on the flywheel that lines up with the mark when the cams are at 12 o'clock? How do you adjust the tension on the belts? Thanks for the help.
  6. Thanks for the tips on the timing belt. I'm going to replace them this week. I've got 97,000 miles on my 86 GL and the oil pressure reads at 0 when stopped and about 30 when doing 55. In town it reads between 15 and 20. The owners manual says not to worry about the 0 reading at an idle. Will resealing it help and if so how do you reseal it? Thanks again for all the help.
  7. Help, my 86 subie quit! It died at a stop sign and though the engine cranks , it won't turn over. It also sounds different. Could I have a broken timing belt and is there any way to check, without tearing everything down?
  8. This is the first post I've done so I hope I get it right. Can anyone help me with this rack & pinnion thing. I've got a 1986 gl 4wd, with power steering. It leaks atf out of both rack & pinnion boots. Is there a rebuilding kit and where would I find it? My Hayes manual doesn't show how to rebuild, only to replace the rack. (ouch on the price of that!) Any help would be appreciated. I've had my subie for a couple of years and it's leaked the whole time, but now it uses as much atf as gas, uh, accutally more.
  9. Hi, I'm new here and not a pro when it comes to subies, but I want to throw in my two cents. I went thru the same thing with my 85 Jetta; lost my wipers, blower motor and headlights. It was the ignition swich. I've got an '86 Subaru GL, I bought about 7 months ago. I love it and am now longing for a brat to keep it company.
