  1. I agree the higher the better I have switched back and forth: 87oct every time if I boost over 4 psi it pings, det, loss of power. but not boosting it does ok. but that one time you really want to go you are screwed, ping ping ping, pi, pi PING!! 91oct for the most part pretty good for me, before I was having some injector problems and it would ping on this too. got new injectors now everything a ok. never really tried the one in the middle. My manual doesn't give any specs on recommended oct rating. Its an 86.
  2. Go here and check it out, Click on New Dash http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/subi81@sbcglobal.net/my_photos I was torn about putting an exhaste gas temp in instead of oil pressure, But I would have to weld on a bung and I had the oil pressure gauge around, so there it is. bty this is on the 86 turbo wagon in the sig.
  3. You probibly know about this site, but in case you don't he put an intercooler and bpv/bov in his 914 with ea-82t motor and shows you how to install the 1.8t xt motor in a 914. http://www.etischer.com/914xt.html I think it is pretty cool. Maybe he solved some problems that you have. Good luck
  4. maybe your t belt slipped, happened on my brothers 87 turbo, it would run but get hot. put new belts on it and ran just fine. Good luck
  5. Ya Red is so much easier on the eyes. I think you might have inspiered me... wait I have a freaken digi dash, (*&^%!!
  6. Looked good for a couple of HP. What was happening in 3rd gear close up, all the bobbaling, is it the computer? Man I wish i could dyno my car, one of these days, one of these days
  7. I had a simalar problem, I thought it was the ignitor too, went to schuks or, autozone, ect, they wanted $300 dollars, or something crazy like that. It was way to much to just by one and hope it fixes the problem. My problem was fixed when I found that one of the 4 wires comming out of the disty was broken, I think it was the yellow one in my case. But check them all and look inside the sheath, that was my mistake. The wire pulled apart inside the sheath when I pulled the motor out without disconnecting the coil. Good luck Nevermind I just found out you have an 89, you don't even have the same modual. Good luck
  8. I am wondering how the chunk got out of the engine or did you find it still in there. Either way that is wild, I have seen one inch long cracks in sleeves but what you have is a real keeper. Give it a proper burial, sorry man.
  9. the Beeping might be your trip computer, but it is weird that it would go off ever 20 min, there is an alarm function but that is a daily alarm. The beep might also be your key is in the ignition and door ajar alarm, very anoying but eaily fixed. If you take off the plastic sheilding around the ignition switch you will see two wires comming from a sensor mounted right next to where the key goes in, follow these wires to the closest plug and unplug it. maybe your keysensor is snafu'ed. Good luck
  10. I was able to lift the engine in and out with three people, two lifting and one supervizing but we did it minus alt, and ac. Just make sure you get a really strong board or better yet metal pipe. Ours broke on the way back into the engine bay, Good luck!!
  11. Have any of you heard of this. I saw it a long time ago on a Z I think. Looking around an Audi parts store I guess they have them too. On the Z it consited of an industrial strenght hairdrier minus heating element. Does heat really effect these boogers?
  12. Mike M I am planning on cutting down the scoop a little bit to get it to fit just inside the hood bulge. LegacyT from what I have heard the wrx hood scopes aren't that good either. all the air gets pushed up to the rear of the intercooler and does nothing to cool the front part of the intercooler. The reason I choose the xt scoop is ease of monting and all the wrx scoops I found were really expensive. I guess I will just have to give it a try and post back. I think you are right about the sitting in traffic part they would do good to let that hot air out. I shot my air compressor at it and it did a pretty good job of catching most of the air? If that means anything. Thanks for the replies
  13. So I am planning on installing an xt hood scoop on my 86 turbo wagon with topmount intercooler. I have noticed that some of the xt hoodscoops have melted or warped in some cases. What caused this? Engine overheating, idleing to long, turbo to hot. I guess I want to know what type of temps the scoops can with stand before wasting time money ect putting one on. Thanks
  14. Listen for a vaccum leak inside the passanger compartment or in the engine bay. I have a horrable leak in the ventalation control and it makes my car idle really high. but boost is uneffected, because of the one way valve just a thought
  15. What are the little plastic boots that go on the ends of the injector tips? Currently I am running with 1 injector without a boot. car seems to run ok but geting some detonaton, or ping, above 5 lbs boost just wondering if it is related.
  16. Might want to check the trans fluid. My dad didn't on our 81 wagon and it blew 3rd gear out. For the longest time it had a really wierd grrrrrrring noise. I am not saying you will lose 2nd gear its just a good idea to check the fluid ever once in a while. to check the fluid, look for a dipstick on the passinger side opposite the clutch fork. enjoy
  17. 1. Mine does it too, something with the dash, the digital one are known to be a little problematic 2.Normal, on my 86 you can turn on the clearance lights with the car off by pushing in the headlight switch and turning to the left 3.Mine was dim too, got some new lightbulbs for it and good as new. 4. common, lash adjusters, as long as they don't tick to long. 5.I got my lsd out of an RX just check the ratios to make sure, 3.70 is the most common but I have heard that there are 3.9s somewhere 6.blah 7.blah 8. I think pretty stong, 12-14 psi seems like a lot of boost to me, just rember that you are driving a wagon. just kidding. Enjoy the bliss that is subaru
  18. Someone put an EA-82T in a porche 914 I believe here is the link http://www.etischer.com/914xt.html Pretty cool!
  19. Welcome to the board, I have an 81 same as yours but GL 4wd. They are great, I have had some problems with mine but nothing that can't be fixed. Watch the Radiator, Mine was actually pushed in when I bought it and eventualy blew a head gasket because of it. Sometimes the carbs can be a pain, had to rebuild that. Always check your engine oil and trans oil, My dad forgot and blew 3rd gear out, oops? Enjoy the passing light! it is kinda unique to the 81's-84's. Correct me if the years are wrong. Basically just ask a lot of questions everyone likes to help out. Enjoy
  20. Got one from the Junk Yard, Ironicaly from a subaru than I once owned. Thanks for the input will post pics when I get the ickey gear out. As a warning to all those that don't check their trans oil. Thanks!
  21. Thanks for the Advice, Did anyone have any problems viewing the pics, where they too big? too small ect? Thanks again
  22. Damn missed it! As soon as I saw the Metal chunks I was thinking PnP. Ya I have a $75 dollar 5 spd d/r in my 86 turbo wagon. Works like a Million bucks HA HA PnP! Thanks for the Reply
  23. So my dad was drinving my 81 wagon (4wd d/r manual) and came home said it wouldn't go into 3rd gear. Checked the Dipstick, no oil just smoke film. Drained less than a qt out of it. Found 4 or so teeth from I think 3rd gear in the bottom of the trans, with my finger. I am thinking junk yard trans, or rebuild. Let me know if anyone has experiance with rebuilding a subi trans. The crazy mechanic inside of me says go for it. But I am curious on expence To see the photos follow the link then click on "My Photos" http://photos.yahoo.com/subi81@sbcglobal.net Thanks a bunch!
