Sticking speedometer (around 70mph or so)
Subi81 replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks I didn't know there was an adjustment nut on there. Have to check that out next time I pull the dash. You are probably right graphite pouder would probably work better than oil or grease. THanks -
did you make sure the tire place didn't forget to put it on. Sometimes it happens

Should've taken a picture!

eh what are you going to do it was a free suby! The previous owners son's friend hit it with his lifted pos. I figgure it is my anti theft device. Thief looking for something to steal, my car sitting next to a nice straight (insert any car here) theif thinks hmmmm that guy is probably dead poor I'll look in the straight car. I guess that is my way to rationalise not fixing it. besides it gives it charactor. And isn't that what soobs are all about. I preffer the term avocado, is that what the factory called it "harb" what is that? Bty I have yet to see another soob with this same color, throw some junk in yours, you know load it down, and post it. Just kidding. -

Ok so we are showing off. Going off to college, the car was on a slight slope. Heaviest thing was probably my rolling tool box. Moving out of our old house, carrying, an ea-71 ea-82t and a 5 speed DR, trans, multiple 100's lbs of lead, (tore down an x-ray room) along with other stuff, Oh yea a really old bike. The diff was like 4inches off the ground. So com'on people how full have you got your suby? -
How good are these "JDM engines" ?
Subi81 replied to gotime242's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am not sure about their inspections. When I was over there my girlfriends family had a sambar that just came back from inspection. The family complained that it was running like crap and gave no heat. So I checked the thermostat and sure enough thermostat looked like it exploded. So I have lost a lot of respect for their inspection system. Maybe it was an isolated event. But when the inspection costs $1000 they should at least catch that. I have a theory that all of these JDM engines are really just junkyard american engines? Just my crazy theory. Not based on any facts whatsoever. I agree the Japanese repair market is a joke. If you need a part you have to go to the dealership. When I had to get the thermostat quess where I had to go. Yes for a freakin thermostat. In American I could buy a thermostat in a grocery store, well maybe not in a grocery store. end rant. -
anyone purchased a thermovalve (pics)
Subi81 replied to Subi81's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well the junkyard yeilded another broken one I guess I am off to the dealership. Eh I guess I need to go there anyway I needed new shifter bushings anyways -
not sure about 84 but my 81 with a hitachi the float was accessable if you took the carb top off I think 5 screws and you are in. You could also check the float level through a sight glass on the drivers side of the carb, it was under all the chanister and fuel lines. Good luck

Digi-dash temp guage values??
Subi81 replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry the analog chart gives all temperature as a function of resistance NOT gauge position, you would have to give me a resistance then I could throw a temperature back at you. Ya I did the same thing you did add up the temperature and you get like 300 deg, dam that is HOT. I found another chart that might be of more help. Out of the same 87 fsm. -
Digi-dash temp guage values??
Subi81 replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Was going to type all this out but figgured what the heck. I like the phase "somewhat overheating." Good luck Bty this data is out of an 87 fsm. I pretty sure that 87-89 all use the same digi dash I just check my fsm 88 and it was exactly the same -
Looks like this: The valve inquestion is off an 86 T wagon. Tested mine and it failed. I believe it is the reason I am having poor hot idle and failing my smog test. If you bought one from autozone or if there is a place on the net that rebuilds them let me know. I can only guess that the dealership wants an arm and a leg for one of these. Heck they wanted $140 for a vaccum advance? Thanks

ya the previous own of one of my subi's didn't use antiseise, just go slow back and forth and it should come out. After you get the plug out remember antiseise after I started using that I have had nooooo problems with stuck plugs. Good luck

The insulation under my hood...
Subi81 replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Funny, I was just talking to some friends about it. The only part of the car where the clear coat is peeling off is the hood area. Little background. The car was parked for over 2 years with leaves and stuff landing on it. Mice chewed up the insilation at some time. Not sure if the hood peeled before or after the mice got to the insillation. I guess I am just saying that this MAY happen to your car if you take out the insilation. But like Qman said the hood scoop will probably help. I installed a hood scoop and tore out the rest of the insilation. Any advanced destruction of the clear coat was caused by a high pressure washer more than anything. notice insilation missing (chewed by mice) notice hood clear coat damage -
Going down the road feeling bad...
Subi81 replied to belizeanbus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
glad to hear you got it back together. If you look at the mechanical fan the shaft has flats on four sides that you can get a cresent wrench on. I have been running my car without T belt covers for about 2 years. I blew one belt but the belt was of undeterminable age. When it did blow diagnosis and repair was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy. I guess it is a matter of personal preference. nude T belts or not nude? -
Ya that is nice. 914's are cool! Nice video's. My jaw just dropped seeing the need for speed video. To me that is what a turbo motor is best at. Awsome!

EA82T Thingamabob (whats this)
Subi81 replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep Fast idle control. Join the club mine decided to eject itself from my intake manafold 500 miles from home. The car would run fine if I was cruising at zero vaccum. But idle or boost and foggedaboodit!! Found one at the junkyard but the o-ring was all crusty had to go find one at a hardware store. -
Sticking speedometer (around 70mph or so)
Subi81 replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine does a similar thing (it just gets really slow to respond around 70) I think you have the right idea. Just put a little grease or oil on the main bearing or bushing and you should be good to go. Since it is such a pain in the butt to take out the dash I would test it out with an electric drill before it is mounted back in the car. just to make sure it doesn't stick. Good luck -
front mount intercooler progress. I/C piping.(DUW)
