  1. You can try unplugged the TCU and seeing if the rear tires spin. Make sure you got all 4 wheels jacked off the ground when you do this. Easiest to try it while on the lift. If they do not spin while the TCU is unplugged (and in drive) then you likely have problems with the tranny extension. Might be worn out clutches. Might be worn o-rings. Can't know until you get in there.
  2. I am in Boston, MA. Long way from Texas. I'd part with the entire engine (block and heads) for $200, but i fear that shipping will make it really expensive.

  3. I will check that next time it happens. It might be unrelated, but the rear defroster stopped working. Gotta check the fuse for that....
  4. You know the loud, high-pitched beep that sounds when the car is off and you put your keys in the cylinder? I hear that randomly when I am driving. It will beep once or twice or sometimes more often. I've tried jiggling the ignition key but it doesn't seem to stop the beeping (or start it). It's getting annoying. Any ideas?
  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO-tj9cict8&feature=share wtf?!
  6. The air filter box is on the other side of the engine compartment. Do you mean the ducting that goes into the throttle body?
  7. Definitely from Subaru. The new plate is aluminum, not cheap plastic. Like GD says you might consider replacing the rear main seal, but follow his instructions very closely.
  8. GD, how did you get to the bottom nut from the top? There was one bolt on the top and a nut on the bottom. I was able to feel the lower nut with my fingers but I had no good access to it.
  9. My starter motor started dying over the summer and I knew it was only a matter of time. I would turn the key and it would sometimes take a second or so until the starter would engage. A few months ago I had to bang on it to engage, but then it was fine. Yesterday morning on my way to school it wouldn't start, so I banged on it. It's been testing as "Failed" with my computerized starter/alternator/battery tester, so I know it wasn't doing well. Knowing I'd be pretty busy this semester and not wanting to be left walking to school I headed over to the Subaru dealer to pick up a new starter. I got part #23300AA230R1 for $199.96, but then I had a 15% off coupon. I also picked up replacement climate control bulbs as mine are burned out. I then headed over to my friend's garage to r/r my first ever Subaru starter. I had done plenty of them on other cars, but never on a Subaru. Let me tell you it's not as easy as on other cars! I had to raise and lower the car 3 times in order to get to the various bolts. I started by removing the battery cable and then taking out the long bolt on top. I then raised the car and took off the 14mm nut on the bottom of the starter and also disconnect what appeared to be a computer/electrical connector. The fuel lines were in the way so I had to lower the car in order to pull out the starter, so I lowered the car and pulled out the starter. I put in the new starter and started the thread on the long bolt, and then raised the car to start the nut, then lowered to finish the long bolt and raised it to finish the nut. Plugged back in the connector, lowered it and put on the battery connector again. Plugged back in the battery and turned the key. yay! Put on the starter/alternator/battery scanner and scanned it, and it passed! yay! So that's what I did today in the late afternoon/early evening. I'll return the old starter for the core charge in the next day or so.
  10. You can go over to the Marathon on the corner of Touhy and Western. They are open 24/7 and have mechanics there 24/7. They will let you rent one of the bays and use the lift for a very reasonable fee. I work there in the summers, doing the 9pm to 3am shift. At that time of night it's mostly brakes, oil changes, starters, alternators, and flat tires. Not much "major" work.
  11. It's pretty rare that the ej22 develops a leak, but it can happen. I would get a few cans of the engine degreaser and thoroughly clean off the engine. Wait a day and then visually inspect it while the car is running. Also, top off the coolant and see if it still gets low. It may have just been due to the heater core being opened. Where in Chicago are you located? I am from there and work at a garage there in the summers.
  12. I just called Chuck and Eddie's. The guy said he has an intake but wouldn't go take a look to see if it has the charcoal canister ports on it. When I asked who/when could confirm that he hung up on me. Not cool. Contrast this with F&S who called me in response to an email. The guy was pleasant, nice and patient. Guess who I will buy it from even if they have a higher price?
  13. Question: Can the intake from a 97 Legacy Outback EJ25 (with charcoal and EGR ports) fit on the ej22 engine that I have? If so then I think I already have one in my basement.
  14. In CT? THose guys are one state over from me. I'll call em in the morning.
  15. I'll check with the local yards and make sure any intake has both EGR and the charcoal ports.
  16. Follow up: I went to the garage today and identified the purge valve solenoid. I found a host going from it directly into a metal line sort of behind the power steering pump. I rigged a rubber host from the purge solenoid into the charcoal canister, and then another rubber line from the exit of the charcoal canister into the metal line behind the power steering pump. Does this sound right?
  17. Nic, you have to use an original Subaru sensor. Aftermarket ones are notoriously bad on Subarus.
