engine swap into '78 BRAT
Scooner replied to sandBRAT's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
From what i've seen and read it is quite the pain to put an EJ in a first gen. I believe it has to do with widening the frame rails because the motor is too wide? You might have the skills to do this work though? Personally i love the ease of installing a 90-94 EJ22 harness and ECU. There is a guy on here however who is doing this swap on here though, i think his name is KevinT and he has a brat in the members rides section. Cheers! -
^^that's cool^^ glad to see a car live on!

It might be booty slap for all i know? What do i know? Haha it's when i first start that thing i can hear a tap tap rap tap rap tap hip hop bee bop ll cool j sound in the engine then it goes away. Then under throttle i can hear it slightly, what is HLA adventure? I can't think of what that means right now, and it is a 1990 22.

After 4 or 5 months of trying to get a guys attention by writing notes, and leaving him messages...he calls me today out of the blue to talk about Subies. We talked for a solid hour, really cool guy. He has 4 brats and a 81 Wagon. He wants to work out a deal with me which is cool, he was thrilled that a younger guy was so into brats and old subies. He thought the younger generation didnt know anything about them nonetheless appreciate them. I said i know a WHOLE community who appreciates them haha. So needless to say patience prevailed in my case and i'm going to go look at his stash soon, 2 gen 1 and 2 gen 2 T-tops. Good luck on your quest! P.S. He said i could just have the 81' Wagon if i went to get it in another town close to him. Haha the universe has many ways of unfolding. -
Hey Mitch, i'd definitely take a minute to look at the timing belt tensioners. There is a reason the belt skipped bro, i would suspect one of those. Something caused the belt to move and it could happen again. Maybe the smoke is just from some deposits burning off? I couldn't see your videos from looking at the site on my phone, no videos on here ever show up for some reason.

I thought you replaced the timing belt and all of the components when you did the swap? I might be mistaken though. Good news is that motor is super easy to get the timing back to where it should be and it's non interference in case it is off. If it is off see if the belt has a broken tooth or two. Make sure the crank and cam pulleys aren't damaged either so the new belt doesn't get hurt when you put it on! You might want to think about doing a new water pump while you're in there, their not that expensive either.

Looking at the Brat in the back row you can see the steering wheel is on the left side, so you're right one of these cars could very well be one of ours. I love that the ship says subaru on it, i wonder what size boxer engine it has haha. -

I'm sorry that happened to you, what a freak of an accident. I'm glad you are okay and good job on that wagon man, there aren't hardly any left like that. Personally i'm still in the process of trying to get ahold of some cheap Brats. The cars, not the delicious Johnsonville ones. -

Besides the decals, the orange subaru in that link is pretty sweet. His story about the fire sounds awful, i can't imagine. Does anyone know if he is a member on here? -

Yes sir, we will have to see how it goes with this weather haha nothing like waking up to snow and having to scrap windows. Forgot how much that is not fun. -
That mickey mouse gasket must've not seated correctly? Those can be kind of tricky!

Funny thing, ran a can of BG44K through it one day and about a week later that car ran even worse! Haha took awhile to find that clogged injector as i was new to the EJ22. I could actually see bits of gunk sticking out of the spray holes. Be careful when you go to put them back in as well as the O rings will probably need to be replaced. If not they literally pour gas into the cylinder and cause much stress and anxiety. Are they black top or red top injectors?

Up by Lory State Park at all? -
Hey Mitch i had a similar problem with my first swap and it turned out one of my fuel injectors was clogged. I replaced it and fixed all of the problems. You might want to try cleaning that IAC as well?

P.S. The Tandoori Wings paired with a Himalayan IPA is about the greatest thing ever in life at the Yak and Yeti near olde town Arvada.

is the port cars 1995 and newer have which can tell you things going on in the engine and alot of other systems of the car. From what i've seen/read about OBD II which is 1995 and newer in subies can be a pain with certain sensors and what not. The easiest by far is the EJ22 swap from years 1990-1994 which is OBD I, still has diagbostics but not as advanced as OBD II. If you're really serious and interested you are going to spend countless hours reading and researching on this site brother haha
