  1. It didn't jump time. I'm just doing head gaskets. Check this out. When I was taking the radiator out I noticed some fine white particulate - like scale in the coolant. When I removed the head it was really ugly. Huge white chunks all around in the cooling jackets. Is this thing worth throwing money at? I'm concerned it really heated up bad. I'm sure the radiator and most likely the heater core have some smaller debris as well. Thanks
  2. Is there an easy way to check for bent valves without removing the springs, etc? I'm assuming that if they are bent they are going to hang when I rotate the cam. Thanks for the article links and PDFs. I knew about the valve issue, I wasn't expecting the one cam to rotate like that. Live and learn - my first interference timing-belt, head repair. Thanks
  3. In the process of pulling parts to do head gaskets. Rotated the crank to get everything in alignment for a visual before pulling the belt. Pulled the belt and the right side cams were under load and rotated when the belt was pulled. Should I be concerned about the valves or is it not an issue? Thanks!
  4. I'm going to do the gaskets instead of a swap. The engine has 180k on it. Anything else that should be addressed while it is out. I the head. block surface and cylinder walls will be checked, timing belt, pulleys, tensioner, water pump, valve cover gaskets replaced. Anything else that should be replaced or checked while it is out? Thanks
  5. Will the alt, power steering, A/C from the 2.5 bolt up to the 2.2 or do I need to have all that including brackets, etc. on the existing 2.2 engine? I can get a 2.2 with everything on it for more, but wanted to check. Thanks
  6. Will my 99 EJ2.5D flywheel work on the 93-95 EJ2.2 or will I need the EJ2.2 flywheel? Thanks
  7. Sounds good. Any comment on this - Is the 6th digit of the VIN that the motor comes from a big priority since we are going to a different motor? I'm looking at a 96 Imprezza/Outback EJ2.2 that has a 4 in the 6th digit. Thanks
  8. You all rock! I will look for EJ2.2 as mentioned. It sounds like it will bolt right up to my tranny. Is the 6th digit of the VIN that the motor comes from a big priority since we are going to a different motor? I'm looking at a 96 Imprezza/Outback EJ2.2 that has a 4 in the 6th digit. Hopefully I can find a good used one with lower miles. Did the 2.2s have the head gasket issue as well? Since it will be out, should I replace anything other than the usual timing belt/pulleys/tensioner/water pump? Thanks again.
  9. Thanks for all the replies! Sorry, it is not a GT. The car is a 1999 Legacy Limited SUS 30th Anniversary Here is my engine number: EJ25DAXEYL 2.5 DOHC Newer Motor(JDM): EJ25 D - 2.5 DOHC both from a Legacy Outback Trans: EJ25-B82438 So would it be better to look for an EJ22 : 97- 99? Will a tanny with that motor work as well? I'm hoping to find a lower mileage motor/trans if possible. My current trans seems to be fine althought there is a slight delay for it to engage when shifting form P to D or D to R. Other than that it shifts fine and smooth.
  10. Sorry, newbie here. So my intake won't bolt on to the newer heads so I need to put my heads on the newer motor as well? What other timing components would need to be pulled from my motor and placed on the newer one? Will the newer tranny be fine? I'm also concerned that the hardware all drops in but then I get engine codes due to something not being compatible. Thanks!
  11. I have a 1999 Legacy GT Limited (2.5 DOHC) and would like to know if a 2001-2005 EJ25D 2.5(DOHC) engine/tranny will work. The guy told me I would need to use my intake/EGR otherwise it would be fine. Thoughts or comments? Thanks!
