I "think" I have a stuck caliper due to stuck slide pins,(and probly warped rotor) just got back from Napa/ the library to get manual and sil glide lube. Please excuse my EXTREME ignorance MilesFox said to remove caliper by removing bottom bolt and sliding up. Which bolt is it?? Do I assume the slide pins are the ones with the little rubber boots on??? and the one to remove is the one closest to the ground actually going through what the book calls a "support"???? Am I supposted to be removing the support too??? The only brakes I've ever done were GM and I always had buddies supervising me. I'm alone here, 40 miles from the "buddies" Please help Thanks!!!!!

Thanks for your input! I am leaning to this, as the issue.Best method for cleaning???Should I soak them in something?? Green scrubby pad?? Would this make the wheel hot???? EXTREME pounding steering shake? Lugnuts were NOT loose, In fact, I had a hard time cracking some of them loose. This is WAY worse than any imbalance I've felt before! Tire wear is minimal, nothing like my old Safari Van that DID have a bad ball joint, That tire was smooth on outside and meaty on inside. Possible--- But this wouldn't make wheel hot would it?? This is possible-How will I know if the cause is wheel bearing or just stuck slide pins? I jacked up the car and I can't move the wheel by hand. Thank You I will try to do this

After searching many posts, I think I have my problem mostly diagnosed, but I'm looking for any input ya'll are willing to share. Car is 01 Outback H6 Automatic w/118,000miles. I "think" I have a seized caliper/warped rotor, on front pass. side. Shake is terrible! Also hear noise like warped rotor, BUT oddly, I do not feel that in pedal as much as I would have thought, and the car was not pulling right excessively either. That wheel was quite a bit hotter than the others. I jacked up the car, took the wheel off, and there does seem to be pad material on that rotor. Also, I was unable to turn the rotor by hand. I have more detailed questions to ask RE: fixing brakes--- But I will wait till you experts weigh in on, if this is really my problem, or could it be something else such as wheel bearing or CV or what???? According to reciepts from previous owner, the following was done at 103,000miles Front rotors, pads, 2-CV axels, Pass.side caliper, Pass.side caliper housing. (All Napa parts) Any/all input would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

To anyone who may be wondering about this Yellow Gremlin that recently appeared beside my name in the posts: My Friend guessed my password, and put HIS car on there. Since his car is pretty cool, and I don't know how to change it, I guess I will remain the Yellow Gremlin, until I become the Super Bee???? One of these days, we'll see one of MY rides... -K

I agree 100%! However, in this person's first post, they offered to "have babies" for anyone who will help them, perhaps this "he" is not a "he" at all, and we should accept everyone, black/white/green/purple/male/female as we are, people who live/love Subaru... As a side note, I'm confused- to me, Michigan City, IN. would have meant Indiana, not Michigan, Mass. OR CT??? What up???

Yes, Stationary... Now that you mention it, I do recall the corner mech. that looked at it before I bought it, mentioned something about one axle being replaced. I didn't find any reciepts though, the above (in Quote) is all I found other than tires and oil changes. Any thoughts on the high pitch whine in the A.M.'s ???

I like the gunmetal, for sure. And they probably wouldn't show brake dust as much as the silver. -
Unfortunatly, I'm in Wisconsin, about 1/2 hour from Milwaukee, so- nowhere near you:( I will do some more intense listening in the next few days, but as of now what I hear is... 1st thing in A.M.-grindy noise I attribute to rusted rotors(it's been really humid here) my buddies say this is normal(rotors rusting overnight) so I haven't worried about it. Also 1st thing in A.M.- kinda loud whine for the first couple of miles, kinda like the high pitch sound my 80's GM makes with a vaccum leak. After a while the whine diminishes, and there is a sort of rumbling noise, at first I thought it was mostly in 2nd or 3rd gear, but today I was idling in "drive" and it was rumbling. The rumbling reminded me of the sound my 85 Olds made right before the tranny went out, but they are 2 completely diffrent animals, and I am no mechanic, so I may be totally wrong. I will do some more listening. Thank You very much for your input

I am very interested in this pinion bearing issue, as it seems my diff. bearings have already been replaced. You noted the pinion and ring gears are expensive, does replacing the bearing alone, not require extensive labor? Do I then assume my gears have not been damaged already by this bearing? Needing replacement soon anyway? O.K. I'm getting ahead of myself- as I'm sure you can tell, I'm no mechanic. What does a "going" pinion gear sound like?? Is it whiney or growly or ??. Thank You for your help

O.K. I finally checked the tranny fluid. The "easy" one to get to, on the pass. side... a little bit overfilled with the cleanest gear lube I've ever seen in a vehicle I've owned. The "evil" other one, driver side, was just a tad low with nice clean pink fluid. Do I add fluid to tube where I pulled dipstick?(evil driver side) I don't know how that would be possible, the way it's buried under all that whatnot:eek: (a funnel w/a long hose attached???) Is there a specific type/brand fluid anyone recommends? Same stuff I put in my old Chevys? (I think that's what the book said) How bad is it that the gear lube side was slightly over full? Do I really need to do anything about that? I appreciate all input- Thank ya'll

15 in rims?
KaraK replied to rangermatt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Don't really want to downgrade brakes. Alloys that came with my car are (sorry to say) kinda ugly, and also scratched up. Probably a stupid question from a newbie:slobber:- Are all Subaru 5 bolt patterns the same?? Not like GM w/ big and small 5 bolt pattern? If I find Forester 16" Steelies w/ 5 bolts they'll fit? I will probably also look into the "primitive" 15" wheels just to save $ on tires-winter or summer. Just wondering??? Thanks! -
Thank you for replying:) (Yes it is an Auto.) If this was one of my former cars, the tranny fluid would have been checked (by me) immediately. However, I was informed (by USMB) that this car had 2 tranny dipsticks- so I had the guy at the dealership I bought it from, show me where to check it- both dipsticks are really down under(one on each side) near the exaust manifolds and TIGHT. I have been afraid to stick my hands down there. I knew the car had tranny work done recently(by prev. owner) so I wanted to assume tranny fluid was O.K. I really do need to stick my hands in there when it is hot and running hey?

O.K. I dug thru the reciepts prev. owner left in the car- found one from an out of state "Professional Transmission Service" (guy traveled for work) on 11/11/09 w/104k. following parts listed as replaced- Diff. center bearing support 2-Tapered bearing w/race Front seal Rear seal Internal pipe seal Parts $576.86 Fluid and filter $129.95 Labor $795.00 Exaust repair-Broken bolt extraction $90.00 FYI this work was done about 1000 miles from where I am, so taking it back is not an option, although it had only a 90 day warranty anyway. My mechanical ability is at changing fluids, brake jobs, maybe a line here and there, not much else... Sooo... The pinion bearing is NOT on the above list?!?!:-\ Should I take it to a VERY trusted, VERY expensive Tranny shop?(I've known these guys for years) OR should I take it to a Subaru person I've never met? Do I assume this rumbling noise IS the Pinion bearing? Thank You All for your input

Welcome! I am also new, I had the exact question, but had other issues to clear up first. So- we are stuck with the expensive 16's? (I have a 01 LLBean) Where is the best place to find 16" wheels that are not these aluminum things? I HATE cleaning aluminum!
