Stupid high performance... (not really)
[HTi]Johnson replied to xt6_4_life's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't pull the engine just to do the timng belts, but if you plan on a complete reseal...yeah...best to pull it. -

EA82 bumper interchangability?
[HTi]Johnson replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. -
EA82 Bumpers are the same between GL and DL, right? Is there a difference between years, I forgot when they went with the more inset blinker (1985?). Could I take a bumper off of a GL and put it on a DL? I tried searching, but after 4 years, that search engine still has me confused.

Looking for some simple welding advice.
[HTi]Johnson replied to Gyoas759's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Any good lincoln or miller will work for your case. Like a little kit from home depot would be fine, but if you want to make structure stuff, you should look into a higher amperage unit. Check craigslist. -
I believe you'll need a new belt. Just check to make sure that your belt will route properly.

Never fill your gas tank
[HTi]Johnson replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe it was on it's last leg anyways, and the extra weight of the full tank just broke it's back? I dunno. That happened to me when I filled my tank, the Outback blew a head gasket. -
Are they still held to the strict inspection standards?

I got the quote... ...from the USMB.And I just decided to live with it.

The aviation industry has strict standards. I forgot what the rules are, but the engines are overhauled every so many hours. As GD said in the other thread, something along the lines of, complications at 20,000feet are deadly. I'm not too sure if many use an ea82 for aviation though, with timing belts and that junk.

Just thought I'd share...
[HTi]Johnson replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Update: I can't find a thing wrong with it. Other than it has some minor mold in it and the P.O. decided to spray paint some of the exterior with an outline of cat and some weird symbol. Not to mention all the damn stickers...especially the "organic cottage cheese" stickers...that tells ya about the prior. -
New type of Bumper. Named "Box Bumper" until we make a catchy name, tell us what you think. These are 1/8 plate bumpers formed into the box shape you see. The new models will be wider in the front face. These will easily accept a skid plate, which are in Development easily install and protect a winch (not included). Can add D-rings. Also available for EA82s. $200. Ea82 bumpers might cost extra because of blinker placement. Email if you're interested in EA82 bumpers.

So, today I had some time to work on my $100 Ea82 DL wagon. I got it cheap because the owner said it popped a head gasket. So I bought a head gasket kit and had the engine almost ready to pull, just had to drop the y pipe and engine mounts. Then I called my friend to see if he could help, he asked if I did the typical checks...like compression test and check the timing belts. I did do those and the left bank had no compression what-so-ever. Then I checked the disty to see if it was spinning...it was so I knew that belt was intact and I pulled the cover of the right belt, it was intact. So...must be a head gasket or hole in a piston or something. Then he asked if I actually check the valve timing...I did not. So I pulled the left cover and turned the car over, I noticed the belt was slapping...what the hell...I pulled the center cover and noticed the tensioner bolts came loose...so I reset the timing and reassembled the engine enough to test start it...and after a couple minutes of coaxing, it fired up. So, tomorrow, I'm going to bust out a comp test again and see where to go from there.

Does it have a rear diff?

Full time d/r 5 speed
[HTi]Johnson replied to galopagus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think he has a Full Time box now, without a diff lock switch. I always thought all full times had switches. -
Full time d/r 5 speed
[HTi]Johnson replied to galopagus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All the diff lock on a full time box does is split the power 50/50. I think it's 70 front 30 rear without the switch on. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I need to know too. -
Need Quick help with my Tranny!

I think there is a thing about the reverse switch...I've never dealt with it. -
Need Quick help with my Tranny!
[HTi]Johnson replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Should be 3.9. What kind of tranny do you have in your loyale now? It will bolt right up. As long as you've had a manual tranny in there before. If it's an automatic you'll need the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, clutch pedal/cable. As for shifting components..,.they are all bolt on, you don't need to cut or modify anything. If you have an automatic you're rear diff will be 3.7 and needs to be changed out. And you'll need the center console, just the part that the shifter boot is attached to, and the d/r shift lever. -
copywright infringment???
[HTi]Johnson replied to xt6_4_life's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
He's a great guy to deal with. I ordered some custom stuff from him a while back and it was great work. He made sure it was what I wanted before doing it. I know, I need to get some money together for the next set that I asked ya about. -
Painting your Old Mess
[HTi]Johnson replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wet sanding is when you use really fine sand paper to sand a paint job. It's done by putting the paper in water and then sanding, or you can spray the water on with a spray bottle. It's like buffing it. Takes imperfections out and makes the coat more even. If you think you're going to try this, google the how-to. Because I can't explain it well enough.
