So long GL...
[HTi]Johnson replied to Heironymous Josch's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well at least you stayed Subaru. I did the same, I bought an Outback and still have a 82 gl and 87 RX -
MODS, delete this, stupid questions.

Whats ODD in this picture
[HTi]Johnson replied to Skip's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The engine bay is too clean? Not enough oil residue. -
Maybe this will help check your work TIMING BELT PROCEDURE-Miles Fox. You probably know, ea82t's are timed 20'BTDC. So, with the flywheel at 20' btdc, the left (Driver's side) cam mark should be ~30-40 degrees to the right about 2 'o clock. Then put the distributor in with the rotor pointing at the #1 plug I think it's the closest to the brake canister (someone confirm/correct me, it's been a-while).

Depends on how cold it gets there and how fast you would like your car to warm up. As you probably can tell or know, it draws a warm/hot draft of air into the intake so the engine can run right, because cold fuel doesn't atomize as well as warm fuel. There might be other reasons it's there. But if you notice, the valve closes (On the tube) as the engine warms up. You could look into a block heater for the coolant. Keeps it warm and makes cold starts not as hard on your engine. How cold does it get in Nebraska? EDIT: You don't need to block off the the part coming off the intake. If you did, and it's cold, your car probably won't start, as it would draw air from the end the tube was on.

I know. But that's like a kindergarten teacher yelling at his students because they don't know what he knows and have stupid ideas. As for Dain's comment, I don't know what that was about, kinda uncalled for.

My Loyale Saved My New XT Turbo! *pix*

I love the ram air intake. -
How many people, back in the day, when they first heard that someone wanted to stick an EJ22 into a EA and keep the stock transmission, thought it was a wild/stupid idea. I'm sure the idea wasn't taken as "Oh, yeah, sounds great, do it." Probably something like "What the hell...that'd be too much work to be worth it." was said. I'm saying that yeah, ideas are crazy, but they shouldn't be shot down. Here's a quote to think about:
-
Yes. You could do a EJ swap. You could do the same that everyone else is doing. Or, I know the aircraft engine is rated for a certain RPM band...that's higher than most anything that's pratical to a car. I was trying to make a point that having a "powerfull" ea81 engine in an ea81 car would be awesome, if I had the money, I'd make it happen. You can make anything powerful and fast by modifying or even putting a whole other type of engine in it. Wait, it must be my naive age and experience.

Fuel filter(s). I swear by replacing those.

I'm thinking you popped a head gasket. That happened to me on my Outback. Were there signs of head gasket failure, before this? You know...a little steam out the pipe and/little coolant loss? That's what my outback was like. Then cruising down the freeway and bluh...just crapped out. Lost enough compression not to start up. But I wasn't lucky enough to park at a bar, I was in the middle of nowhere and didn't have a beer. Hopefully it wasn't a HG...like he said, a horrible intake gasket failure.

I know everyone is apprehensive with throwing their money to a business that's just starting, or even a business that's been around. But that's why I started doing this (other than wanting my own bumpers/lift/rack). I didn't want to give someone my money and never see anything of it. I'm trying to keep the price down, as I know there's a reason most of us drive these older Subarus, nescessity, not pleasure. They are fun to drive, don't get me wrong. If you're interested in buying anything, PM me, I'll work with ya. Also, if you have any constructive suggestions, I'd like to know.

WTF is up with this Pius attitude. "You're not old enough..." "You don't have the experience..." "Look at my post count compared to your's...must mean I know more." Dude, it's not about age. And I would spend the money to have a 140 hp ea81 wagon, if I had it. Just to say I had one. I'm tired of this "you don't know what you're talking about" crap. Maybe we don't have the experience you have...I guess all of us didn't pop out with all of this knowledge, like you. We have to learn it. I'm greatfull of your contributions, experience, and knowledge but that doesn't give you the reason to act almighty. To the original post: I learned this from WJM... cheap-reliable-performance....pick two.

Ea81 blown headgasket?
[HTi]Johnson replied to BobBrumby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Water expands to over 1700 times it's size when turned to steam. (I know this from all my firefighter classes) So yea, not much to to see steam. -
One for me. Can't someone make/find/show us a program or application that makes it easier for the person asking "Who wants..." to know who wants. Just like a list of people's names with the amount they want and maybe a "comment section"

I know there's a lot of business doing this. I'm interested in it. My friend is too. But I'm worried about onroad applications (if you meant these to be an offroad mod) because of the centering of the holes, and if you weld the old holes, I'd be worried about the balance. I'm not a mathematician or engineer, but I know that something being slightly out of balanced spinning really fast isn't a good thing. That said, I'm still interested. That's a very good price. Hey, I could probably make the jig for you, if your interested. I have a lathe, milling machine, and a spiffy angle guide (Allows you to drill a hole, rotate 60 degrees, drill another). PM me if your interested.

Most people say go with the felpro head gaskets and then to the Subaru Dealer for the rest, including water pump and oil pump. The oil pump is kinda spendy, you might be abel to just reseal it. The "mickey mouse" gaskets, o-ring, and shaft seal. That's the best way to go, but if you're on a budget, fel-pro gaskets aren't bad. I've used Beck-Arnley (Spelling?).
-
Yeah, good points. I was told that Chilton's were better than Haynes, or is that for the electrical diagrams? I forget. I use RockAuto for my head gaskets. They're around $18 each, for the fel-pro permatorques. And for that hose, it's just an 1/8" or so line abour 6 inches long. Nothing special. Yeah, being someone's biatch probably sucks, so replace both.
-
Parts you'll need are: Head Gaskets (I go with fel-pro perma-torques) Valve Cover Gaskets Intake Gaskets Those are the bare minimum you'll need. I'm sure some people will add to or correct me, that's the safeguard of a forum. Some people will say that if you're in there, you should replace the water pump, reseal the oil pump, and replace the thermostat. Hey, if you want, go for it, but those can be done seperately at a later time. But you have to wonder why the car overheated. Was it the thermostat, waterpump, or a dumb@ss prior owner that forgot to keep his coolant levels up. Good Luck, [HTi]Johnson EDIT: How dare I not say to use the USMB to do the head job, we're all here to help, won't even need a manual. Dang it. OH yeah if you do it yourself, there's a little hose under the intake manifold, you'll see if once you start removing the intake. You should replace it before you put it back together.

replacement strut options?
[HTi]Johnson replied to SoobGoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Why a 3.5" lift? 3 or 4 are the normal ones. 3.5" material is odd. I could do the lift for ya...
