  1. Compression test that engine. All four cylinders, take all the plugs out and comp. test it. check the spark at each plug wire, it should be a nice blue color. Very bright. My friend had a car that would start and run like crap...turned out to be a crappy coil wire...the spark looked yellow like a flame. What about ignition timing....needs to be 20' BTDC with green connectors connected. The black smoke could be a burnt exhaust valve...happened to me.
  2. What's wrong with bending it back? Unless there is a serious kink in it, no worries. You think it's some high carbon piece of steel, that might "shatter". If you think that's the "worst advice ever" then anyone with a lift and bigger tires should have bigger rotors and calipers...nah that might be the second to worst advice ever....that's even more dangerous than bending a piece of mild steel back into place. If you wanna tell me my job (iron/steel worker) go ahead. Oh, and I have done this and drove over 10K on it. You just have to make sure you get it realigned. Sorry, I just took offense. I know that replacing it would be the best thing, but if you think of all the things we do to these machines, bending a rod back and having it realigned is the least of my worries.
  3. Nah, plates, tags, and title transfer (same as registering) was a little less than $120. So, brumby, you pay $470 for registration and insurance?
  4. I've never had a problem with my accel and stock disty in either my 1983 wagon or my 1987 ea82t wagon. I've put over 50k on each. EDIT: I'm not saying that you're wrong, just stating my experiences. Maybe I'm just lucky.
  5. If you have questions about your lifters check these guys out http://www.mizpahprecision.com/pricing.htm They remanufacture the lifters...like $5.20 a piece without core and $4.50 if you send them your core. They told me that it would take shipping plus 1 or 2 days to get them back. But I never bought any from them because my Tick of DEATH was cured by an oil pump reseal.
  6. You could bend the rod back and replace the ends and get it aligned.
  7. Yeah i know, it's about 1.5 year's late. But check it out...lifted xt-6. Who's is it? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10101&cat=500&ppuser=4732
  8. I asked because it could have been your High/Reverse bands. I had this same problem in my 1983 GL with 3at. It turned out to be the governor housing was loose and leaking ATF...it couldn't pressurize for the high gear.
  9. The EGR on my RX was disconnected when I bought the car, I'm thinking of hooking it back up. I have been getting pinging and i KNOW my timing is DEAD ON. It could be a lot of other factors like knock sensor and stuff....but I run Chevron Supreme, so I know it';s not the gas.
  10. Then what is that thing that is inline with my alternator's belt? Is it the radial defibrillator?
  11. I wonder what Professional he's gunna consult that isn't on this board? I don't think anyone who isn't on this board go be a "Professional" in Subaru.
  12. Try this out http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/USRM2/Transmission/Governor/ATgovenorclean.htm
  13. I'd get some exhaust gaskets and studs and put those on and see if any exhaust comes out of that hole. I mean aluminum melts at 660' C! I highly doubt that your exhaust got that hot...imagine what the pistons would look like.
  14. Well I guess I should ask you if there is any exhaust coming out of this hole. That should have been my first question. BUt was that bolt missing when you got under there?
  15. I've seen those holes on every EA82 head that I have handled. It freaked me out at first...but I guess it's to prevent water from building up in a void in the head.
  16. Why is that bolt missing? Are you sure that's not the casting hole they have there so water drains. And the lack of a bolt/stud caused your gasket to blow out and resulting the melting of the timing cover?
  17. All the parts should interchange...engines and everything...the only diff would be the intake on the engine (Carb, SPFI, MPFI) and the pistons. Anyone know of any other differences?
  18. It does sound like too thick of oil. Especially if it goes away when it warms up.
  19. I believe the coolant temp sensor is located to top left of the throttle body. It is between the manifold and Crankcase vent.
  20. Does anyone have pictures of an "O Ringed" engine? I would like to see what it looks like.
  21. All the axle nuts on the front of my Subarus have been 36mm.
