should i or should i not
[HTi]Johnson replied to Buddy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah. I get crap all the time from the guys at the firehouse because of my car. One who has a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee gives me crap, I just ask him what he does with it, and he says "I drive it to work", so I make fun of him for using a v8 gas hog as a commuter. And when he was changing his oil, he burnt himself on his header trying to get the oil filter off. I laughed. Another has a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and he tells me that my subaru always breaks down and is unreliable. Sure, parts break everynow and then, but when his tranny goes out(which dodge trucks are known for) who will be laughing now, especially when he is paying over $2500 to get it fixed. When I pay about $250 for the tranny and clutch kit. And when he says "Man it cost me $50 to fill up" I laugh and remind him that I pay less for a tank and get more mileage. And he is scared of taking it off road. I agree with the 250,000 mile point, you never see any cars with 250k on it, unless it is a subaru. Just ask the Dodge punk how much his daddy paid for his dodge. And how much he has to pay for maintenance parts. Also, ask him how many times dodge has changed the way their drive train is engineered. And make note that subaru still uses it's basic system from the 1970'S!! Because why mess with perfection? by your profile you are 16, and that should be highschool age. If this guy is from your school, who cares what he says. I realize, now, that people like that in highschool don't matter now, in the real world. Yes, they may make you feel like crap, but that's just because they want you to feel worse than they are. But in the end, if you really have to have a new-er car, get a Subaru. -
Has anyone used one of these to bend pipe for exhaust? If so, how'd it do? Nevermind, I searched this issue. My bad. You can delete please.

Since headgaskets are the weakest point (one hopes) , what would the best ones be? -

The block that we put in my friends car didn't need tapped. -
My first car...project
[HTi]Johnson replied to NewDriverOlderRide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, well, is his a dual range? He didn't state. Is it a push button 4wd or is there a spiffy lever that goes up, twice. -
carbed block for turbo

Knock sensor, yes, vent hole no. The spot that it goes in is there, it just doesn't go all the way to the crank. You could drill and put your own vent there, but the shavings would go into the crankcase. -

Knocking sound, universal joint?
[HTi]Johnson replied to Hatchet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's what the prior owner of my wagon thought. The U joint went and busted the rear output shaft housing on the tranny all to hell. -
Pillar guages for EA82 cars?
[HTi]Johnson replied to Tin Soldier's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've heard to use 1st gen impreza pods. They're a direct fit, subaru_styles says. -
Pneumatic Height Control???
[HTi]Johnson replied to KNIGHTRIDER's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You could take the whole airbag system out...and replace it with struts from the same type of vehicle. That's what I did because mine weren't reliable and it makes for better handling. -
Valve spring removal
[HTi]Johnson replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've used one of those. They work. If the head is off, yes, you compress it and then push it down and tap the valve up. If it is still on the block, you could wiggle the compressor with the spring being compressed, it'll shake those little keepers loose. -
How come these pistons not look the same?
[HTi]Johnson replied to subynut's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Probably difference in turbo, carbureted, or SPFI -
So I just got a weber.....
[HTi]Johnson replied to Jerry DeMoss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think that is a manual choke and the DGEV is an electric. -
disty installation
[HTi]Johnson replied to belizeanbus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The disty goes counter clockwise. You're # 1 cylinder is the one closest to the driver's side F R O N 2 4 T 3 1 The firing order is 1324. The #1 cylinder is on the passenger front, #3 is passenger rear, #2 is driver's front and #4 is driver's back. Did you follow themanual to put the timing belts on too? If so, they are probably wrong. There are valve timing marks on the flywheel. They are three marks together. Put the pointer on the center one and then put the passenger's pully up and the driver's down. then put the belts on. then turn the engine over, by hand, and put it back on the marks, they should line back up. -
Subaru_styles and I were just talking about this. He's gunna use the 4wd Pushbutton to engage his diff lock on his RX Wagon. It's a GL with an RX trans and diff. He said something about the button's wiring harness being the same as his diff lock's. Maybe you PM him. (Subaru_styles His name is Brad). I understand what you mean. Everyone was over thinking it. The Diff lock switch isn't anything special but a switch. It completes a circuit and tells the system to lock the diff (which uses vacuum selenoids). But yes, the 4wd pushbutton is a on/off switch. It will work, but I'd ask Brad.

That kinda supports people's reasoning for having nice brush guards(Should be deer guards) and a lift. Hit the deer, it goes under.

Hello. Does anyone have an exploded view, or detailed pictures of the internals of a EA82 5spd 4wd tranny?
-
Hello, is an Engine in a 1998 Outback isn't an interference is it. I don't think it is and was just making sure. Oh, what does the pulley, on the lower left side of the crank do(It's part of the timing belt system)? Is it the oil pump. I'm asking these questions for someone who has mechanics telling them that there motor is shot because the pulley sheared off the, what I think is the, oil pump. Thanks, Justin.

Who purchased John Bloom's RX?
[HTi]Johnson replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know he didn't swap pistons, I helped him do the swap, nights before wcss6 Thanks for the info. -
Hello all. I was wondering who purchased John Bloom's (Mudrat) RX. I was wanting to ask them if the block had a crank case vent on it. It's a carbed block. I believe it would be to the left of the KNock sensor in the back (By the bell housing) Thanks! Justin Johnson

Gas Milage, TOD's, and Oil leaks
[HTi]Johnson replied to froggymike's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've had the same luck with Marvel's Mystery oil and ATF. ATF wins in my book. (It's cheaper) Yeah, oil change, with cheap oil, substitute a Quart of oil with 1 qt ATF. Run it fairly high RPMS...like 5 or 6 grand for 5 seconds at a time(Whatever you are comfortable with) I drove my at 6.5k for 10-15 seconds(I was pissed), it went away.
