  1. Yeah, sweet name. If it is an EA82 (that's the generation) it has timing belts. One easy way to determine this is to look and see if it has plastic on the front of the engine, this houses the belts. There is a great write up on doing timing belts. If you're gunna do the belts, might as well do the pump and vice-versa. One thing to watch out for is to line up the VALVE timing marks on the flywheel to the pointer. There is the ignition marks...you know 0...5...10..15..20 and then there are three marks close together, no one knows why there are three, but you line the pointer one to the middle, and put the passenger side pulley with the mark up, and the driver's with the mark down. then put the belts on, minding all the marks. Someone correct me if I am wrong. And please give a link to the write up. WELCOME TO THE BOARD!
  2. HAh where is cornelius? I'm in eugene, if it is closer. OH yeah, I weld too.
  3. Are EA81 and EA82 flywheels the same, or relatively?
  4. Or towing a trailer, have you seen that one video of the justy pulling a 14 foot trailer up a hill, It's all smoking and stuff, goes off camera, then you hear it stall, restart and gear grind, then it slinds backwards down a hill and crashes into a bank. It's the funniest thing ever.
  5. I agree with the 7000RPM, but put half a quart of ATF in there, it's a detergent...it'll clear up your lifters. At least that's what I did, never had noisy lifters again. about 7 oil changes later too.
  6. My GL-10 Turbo wagon gets 18mpg no matter how I drive it. Lead foot or light foot. Highway or city. Same. But, I think that it's getting better mileage now. Because I am at 150miles on one tank, thats "half" full. I ran a bottle of Techron through it in the last tank, with 89 octane. I believe a bottle of techron every 5 tanks is a good thing.
  7. Well telling us what kinda car you have is a great start. I'd change the fuel filters in it. If it is a car before 1984(or a hatch until like 1989) Theses are referred to as "EA-81s". It has two (well one is a seperator). One is in the engine bay (has three hoses on it) and there is one in front of the rear passenger side tire by the fuel pump. replace them both. If you have a car that is 1984 or newer (exc. hatches) these are EA82s. They have one fuel filter in back of the engine bay on the driver's side. Has one hose in, one hose out. (Is this the same on carb'd EA82?). Have you checked the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and plug wires? Hey welcome to the bored. Most of us are also not in the posistion to have a mechanic work on our cars. [HTi]Johnson
  8. SOmeone might have said this...but why not use that compressed air and route in to the intake. I know you'd have to put it in front of the maf...and make some sort of device that prevents it from cleaning out your airfilter(Going the wrong way). This would help in short bursts, but having your car compress the air in an air compressor then sending it through the intake would probably be redundant in long usage. Good Idea tho.
  9. I don't believe that the justy has an interference engine. I mean, why would subaru decide to make an engine have interference?
  10. Hello. Welcome to the board. I did this same swap on my 87 gl-10 Turbo. You'll need: -a 3.9 rear diff -Manual rear driveline -5spd Dual Range tranny -Manual tranny crossmember -shift linkage (all of it) -center console out of manual -front axles from a manual tranny car (I think, mine was turbo, which is the same) -Flywheel, flywheel bolts, pressure plate bolts, and clutch pack -Pedal assembly (for the clutch pedal) -clutch cable Did I forget anything anyone? Oh yeah about 4-6 hours and a keg on tap:drunk: Oh yeah, as for the 50 extra HP...do an EJ engine swap!! And if you do the swap, you'll have to crimp some wires together in the harness that goes to the automatic shifter. So the car can start. It's the Neutral/In Park switch. Good Luck, feel free to ask questions! [HTi]Johnson
  11. Those are awesome. Last time I put fog lights on my car, I rolled it the same day. I'm kinda apprehensive for my GL-10s sake.
  12. Wow. You still haven't received your title?
  13. SOunds like your cat is breaking up. What I did on my EA81 was cut a three sided hole in the top of the cat and peeled it back, ripped everything out and folded it back down and welded it back. Now if you don't have access to metal working tools, you could take the Y off and get a semi flexible piece of rod and slide it in the back of the pipe and smash the crap out. This made it sound more hollow, I ended up cutting the cat out and welding pipe there, to finish the Y. DISCLAIMER: Tampering with Emissions control pieces may be breaking laws in your country. (And not having a catylitic convertor will cause you to not pass emissions.)
  14. Snow and ice aren't the biggest culprits for rust. It's the salt they put on the roads to get rid of the snow/ice.
  15. With a little work, the subaru WILL go FARTHER than the jeep!!!
  16. That's awsome subaru nuts. By the way, you could get away with tapping it to the next thread size without drilling it out. Because the bolt acted as a drill when it removed all the threads. What is the bolt size? 6mm? Now it's perfect for a 7 or 8 mm. I'd say try tapping it first. If it fails go ghetto-fab on it. Right ON!!! The USMB is the most valuable source for subaru.
  17. WOw, you must have a lot of time in your 45 min commute to figure out all that there "mathematics with yer 'piston travel' "
  18. What are you driving? I'd guess it was an EA82 Manual. With my GL-10-Turbo, it loves 3500rpm. anything much lower lugs it. OH yeah, if it was a manual you'd have to open the tranny up and put a 3.7 diff in, unless the tranny is from a turbo. Automatics are 3.7 too, I believe. You probably know all this since you are asking about gear ratios.
  19. Those silica beads are the same thing you find in jerky bags and shipping bags. Check this out 200 Packets Of SILICA GEL DESSICANT - CAMERA DRYING NEW . BAM Filter time. Better yet
  20. Why can't you run Megasquirt on your turbo'd car? And he was saying that he didn't want to put more money, than he paid for the car, into the car.
  21. Ok, I realized that I didn't post this in my last post. John is a great guy. He knows what he is doing and does it well. When I got my EA81 wagon and wanted to work on it...he told me to come over and he'll show me some things. This was like 2 or 3 weeks before WCSS6. I cam e over there and met Brad (subaru_styles). They were in the process of creating his RX wagon. I would stay and help 'till like 12 AM and leave, but they would stay up till 5 or even all night. They finally got the RX Wagon rolling. Brad took off a first time and then spun a cup in his rear axle (It was an AWD RX tranny) so john towed it back and replaced the axle for Brad. Then Brad was driving it down I-5 and blew his engine(probably racing VW's), not really but it was an old engine, that wasn't used to the new spider intake and such. John told Brad to bring the car back and we'll work on it. John put off his projects (the weeble-wooble) to get Brad rolling again. We spent endless nights to swap a new engine in, but in the end, the engine wouldn't run after it was warmed up. Let's see, in the three weeks I was at John's...they worked on Austins EJ conversion, Brad's RX wagon, made about 4 or 5 bumpers, and helped countless subaru's get going again. As John would be working, people would show up to his house and ask for help or a part, and John would oblige. When I was helping out there, I noticed that John's kids would come out and see what he was up to...or ask for him to put them to bed, Like a great father, he put his family first. As for bumpers or anything that needs to be bent, let me say this. The bender he has isn't that fastest in the world...in fact, it may be the slowest power driven bender in the world. But it gets the job done. I helped John from July to September, but stopped after that because I have college and work to juggle. I would like to spend more time there, he's a cool guy and working on Subarus is cool too, but I have a little thing called LIFE that gets in my way, DANG LIFE! Now he has a job and is Mr. Mom when gets home. That doesn't leave much time for him to work in his shop. Although he is making a great attempt to connect all the ends together with everyone. Just next time, everyone, don't pay full price up front if you don't trust him...maybe half price or the price of materials and once he has it completed, pay the rest. Good Day, Justin Johnson
  22. Yeah all bolt in. No cutting needed. The pedal assembly has four bolts up there. You have to undo all the cables and wires...etc. Oh yeah..if you want the 4wd lights and reverse lights, you'll have to wire those in.
  23. Yeah, what the heck is a trailor! Oh the thing I use to tow my dirtbike with my wagon. What do you have done to that bad boy?
  24. The conversion is pretty easy...especially if you are going to pull the engine. What you will need is: -Tranny (EA82 5Speed Dual Range) -Driveshaft from a manual transimission car (Ea82 of course) -Rear Diff (3.9 Gear ratio) - All the shifting linkage - EA82 Flywheel, and clutch kit.(you'll need the flywheel bolts too) - Pedal Assembly from manual car - Clutch Cable - Center Console from manual car I believe that's it. Someone add to this if you believe I bypassed something You can probably get all of this from a board member.(That's what I did. Way cheaper than junkyards) You have an Automatic Tranny with a turbo...you're axles should be the same, mine were. Always willing to help, [HTi]Johnson
