to much gear oil ....?
[HTi]Johnson replied to moshem74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a friend put ATF in the Diff. He's not a subaru dude. I spaced it when I was installing the radiator and he pulled the dipstick and said "Woh, this ATF smells like crap". He put 1/2quart in and I was like "WAIT, *****, that's where the gear oil goes!" So far no probs . I consider it a thurough oil flush. So, should I drain the gear oil? -
Hey all, I'm just saying that I shouldn't have any more questions about the 3AT to 4spd D/R Swap(Knocks on wood). It's done and driving. Thanks everyone for helping out/putting up with my noob questions.

Hey all. I am almost done with my 3AT to 4spd D/R swap. Just one problem. Where/how do I mount the 4wd lever, and are the "L" arms that go from the lever to the end piece on the transmission different between S/R and D/R?

3AT to 4Speed Starter Question
[HTi]Johnson replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
holy shizzle. That was a fast response THANKS Turbone. -
HEY. I just installed my 4speed tranny...after months of takling about it. It's still on jacks though, it got too late tonight. OK OK...the question: Does the starter from the 3AT have to be spaced for the 4Speed? I searched the board and found some post that said it doesn't need to be modified. But I've heard otherwise. THanks for your HELP [HTi]Johnson[uSMB]

I had a similar problem. I replaced the belt and forgot to release the hydraulic tensioner(pull the pin). After i put all the plastics on i started it and heard what I thought was pulley on plastic, so I dismissed it. About 3k miles later my car just died, 2 blocks frome my house, after going on a 200mile trip. So I pushed it to a gas station and took the plastics off, and found the tensioner bolt had snapped. Lucky for me, that whole plate come off. No drilling or easy outs.

You can lift anything. Are you wanting to keep it 2wd or convert it to 4wd? Jon Bloom (Mudrat79) lifts anything. Contact me for his number.

Last week I bought a 1991 Subaru Legacy wagon 2wd. It has everything. ABS, SUNROOF, AC, PS, PW, Cruise...ect. I bought it for $75!!!! The person who sold it to me said it died when he was driving...so he thought it was the T-belt and tore into it, he put it together, half assed. He just put the belt on and tried starting it, it didn't start, so he let a Mechanic get into it...he had no clue (He's a Jeep Tech). I got it, and took the belt off. I realigned it and put it back on...tried turning it over....nothing...So i checked the fuel and spark...ok. I checked the plugs...fine...the injectors...fine. Looked at the crank timing pulley..noticed that the arrow wasn't the alignment mark. So i realigned it...started it, it started, but i had to turn it off really fast because lack of the radiator and the tranny lines already spewed 2 gallons on the ground. Now that I haveb it all together it runs just fines...WTF was that guy thinking. It looks excellent (condition) So, what should I do to it, I'm new to the new gen subes .

how "good" are the full time 4wd trannys.
[HTi]Johnson replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mudrat79 (Jon Bloom) makes adapter Kits that allow an EJ engine to mate to a EA tranny. They have everything you'll need. They are tried and true. He uses one and Austin uses one. -

Total cost....priceless. -
Hello. Anyone know where I could get a repair manual for a EA81 4speed D/R tranny. With tons of pictures...simple minded. I've looked, and can't find any. Internet manuals are good. Free is better. But will pay for one.

I bought a 4sod (supposedly D/R) tranny from a mechanic. He said it was D/R. Well I brought it home and I can't get it to shift. The shifting rod will not move at all. And how can I tell if it is D/R? Pics please.

Hitachi Carb Mod ????
[HTi]Johnson replied to SubaSport's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, you'll notice more highway "power". The down side, might be gas mileage...that's what I heard. -
I also helped doing that swap (the little that I helped with). That block was resealed as much as possible. Unless he split it and completely did it over. But why? It'd be cheaper to get a crate motor. Brad was there almost the whole time, pretty much all his off time. Which is hard, he lives in Bend, car is in Eugene. Anyways, Brad good job, and great dedication. Most people would just ditch it by now. Let's get it done!

2 questions about power steering
[HTi]Johnson replied to TheMeatWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My 5 cents . You should just take the power steering out. Unless you do some pretty hard offroad action(like rock crawling or really bumpy shizzle). It just is a hassle and robs some power from your motor. I know GD is gonna shoot this down, but hey, my opinion is well, mine. If you don't believe me, you can ask the two PS systems I trashed canned. I mean, what are you going to use the PS for? Taking some slight corners at 35mph? Just my JuJu. -
I want to buy a subaru!!!
[HTi]Johnson replied to dustyrider's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Glad to hear of your interest in Subarus. I have a few questions. What do you want to use the Subaru for? Do you want to go off road a lot? Get a 4wd model. If you do get a 4wd model, get it in Dual Range. You like luxuries like power steering, AC, and a tachrometer? Get a GL Model. You stated you like that hatchbacks. So get a hatchback. WELCOME TO THE BOARDS.
