Back when I first started wheeling my Subarus, I never broke anything. But I have been lately...it's probably the fact that I know that I have a tow home with one of my friend's trucks and trailer. I do agree that not breaking anything is the goal and having to not worry about something breaking is great. But, sometimes stuff breaks and that's something that you need to think about and drive accordingly to. And, believe me, I don't have the money or time to keep replacing things. As for solid axles...I have an idea that might be able to fix that. Question: How much of an angle will a rear CV shaft work...if the angle was constant, not going more or less of an angle? I had an idea of completely housing the diff, axles, and spindles as one unit and having them pivoting on one point...with attachments to the torsion bar too.

Exactly. I love the looks on people's faces when they see, what they think is, a station wagon mobbin' down trails or across the sand dunes. Yes, you could go the route of a Toyota or something that was more meant to be offroaded, it may be fun. But not as much of a challenge. They have a bigger aftermarket support than our old Subarus do, so it makes modding your Subaru more a personal thing since you usually have to make the pieces yourself. The sense of accomplishment must be higher with a Subaru.

...have to split the block to get the cam out of an Ea81? Or is Haynes Manual lying to me again (which I hope it is)!?

...like this? I'm just working in the E.R. Lobby today, we're REALLY SLOW (dare I say that). Just pondering.

So, I'm bored out in my shop. I want to know what you guys would like to see on your Subarus. You know, custom things like light bars or maybe something you though up and just don't have the means to materialize it. PM me your ideas or post them here.

I believe that if you don't break something when you go out wheeling, you're not having fun. I blew up a welded rear diff last time I was out. I haven't taken it apart to see what went wrong. I also think that if you break something, it's just an excuse to make it stronger. In theory, once you replace everything that breaks with a stronger piece, nothing will break. But, finding out when the breaking stops is the hard part. I do understand the anger it brings to break something offroad, especially when it happens right in the beginning of your trip. But that's the challenge. The engineers didn't think that someone was going to get the great idea of lifting one of their wagons they designed. This may just be my view, but I always look at things and wonder how to make it better and breaking it is an easy way of doing this. Good day all, Justin.

I know the bumpers themselves are wider, as for the mounting points, I can't remember.

Hello all. I'm going to be putting a 5speed in my RX and just want to know what all do I need from the donor car to make the diff lock switch work? Is there a way to make it work without chasing the wiring harness under the seats and behind the dash? Thanks for your input. -Justin.

Well, too bad I live in Eugene. Take some pics and we can asses the material needed. I kinda feel like a road trip. I know how to weld, I used to get paid to do it at an iron shop... I may be willing to help out. -

:eek:Why? I hope it wasn't just to fix the body. Because it should be easy to do with everything in, only a few pieces removed. Good luck though, do you have a welder? -

So...turns out the timing belt tensioner on the left side of the engine came loose and through off all the timing. It runs like a champ now. -
Don't the 2WD EA82s have all the mounting bolt holes for the 4wd setup? I agree with trying to find a 4wd so you can have one as a daily driver.

AT rear Axles to D/R rear axles

That's what I was getting at. But it is good to know the fact that older ones had a DOJ. True. -

A couple of :Flame:will get it out:lol:. Good luck though. Maybe flag the area with flags or marking tape so the plow drivers don't plow it. -

It's an ea82. Come to think of it, I haven't check the right timing belt. I checked the left one just to make sure the disty was still spinning. -

I believe all EA82 rear axles are the same. As with all EA81s are the same. But you can't swap EA81 to EA82 or vice-versa. -

I did the spark plug thing. It sounds like it's running on 2 cylinders. I think the disty may have water in it. It's also spfi. -
Hello all. It's been ages since I posted in the general forums. The story: The other day, I finally got to take my 1988 DL Wagon, with it's untested 4 inch lift out to play. It did awesome. There was some steep road climbs with snow that it just pushed on through. THEN....I found a trail that no one has used. My friend walked along the trail and scouted it out. He said that there was a little puddle in part of it, so I went for it, I had to cross some deep ruts to continue on with the trail and about 50 yards into the trail...it felt like my front end just got ripped out. What it turned out to be was the fact that the "little frozen puddle" was a 3 ft deep puddle with 2 inch thick ice over it. My car actually made it a car length and a half onto the ice before it fell through. The questions: So, the car was at operating temp before taking the ice bath, what could that do to the engine (it was never completely submerged.)? I turned the car immediately, so I know I didn't hydro lock it. But could a starter cause hydrolock damage? When I got it home, had to be towed, I drained the oil and front diff. Oil was a milkshake and the diff was normal. Thanks for your time, [HTi]Johnson

If it's anything like the EA82 tick, no, it's not on it's way out. I've got thousands of miles on an engine that sounds like that.

How much disassembly is required
[HTi]Johnson replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Harder than an EA82. I can tell you that. I never managed to get an EA81 tranny split, but was able to with EA82. I think they EA81s have a big nut at the back of the gearing that I was able to find a socket for it. -
