So, I took one apart, to see what exactly it is they rebuild. I couldn't figure it out. Here's what they look like completely dismantled, minus the second thing from the left, it has a little ball and a spring in it. So, I'm going to do this to eight of them, clean them out and put them in my RX that is clackin' like none other (new oil pump, wix filter, and good pressure on an aftermarket gauge). Then I'm going to take the noisy ones apart and see if there is something noticeably wrong with them. I'm surprised that's all they are. What do they rebuild on these?

U-Pull-It checklist...areas of concern
[HTi]Johnson replied to LuberJack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As for the steering. What kind of fluid did you use...or the prior owner use? It uses ATF. Some people use powersteering fluid, that doesn't work well. -
clutch cable : prone to failure?
[HTi]Johnson replied to brokebill's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Clutch cables and throttle cables like to become a source of a ground. I recommend running extra grounds from the engine to the firewall (Close to the cable holes) check the engine to battery ground. -
Will this idea work?
[HTi]Johnson replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is there any way to get a nut behind the metal? Could you tack weld a nut to a stiff piece of wire and thread it back there? -
I'm going to say: Change the fuel filters. There are two. One in engine bay, one right next to pump. You'd be surprised. Should have changed those first. EDIT: I Reread your post. Did you change both fuel filters?

subaru in honda commercial
[HTi]Johnson replied to SoobGoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Awesome. I'd say it's kind of a rib rubbing/ respect to Subaru. Those japanese car companies actually help each other out more than hurt. It's kind of a national pride thing. -
EA81 oil pump gasket leaking
[HTi]Johnson replied to ()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's good to know, I've only done EA82s. On a side note, can the pans swap out? If not, is there a benefit to adding baffles for high angle applications? -
I've searched, but all the links I found were broken. Can someone send me a picture of the socket or a socket you made, for the re torquing of the head bolts on the ea82s? Thanks much, Justin.

EA81 oil pump gasket leaking
[HTi]Johnson replied to ()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Really easy. Oil pan on the other hand...I'd imagine you'd have to jack the engine up a little, with the mounts unbolted. -
TIMING BELT PROCEDURE. Thanks to MilesFox, located in the Engine Section of the USRM. (Link on the top right of any page)

PermaTorq headgaskets. You don't have those on there.

Maybe stick the ballasts behind the fender? Between the outter and inner fender. And, if you do this, do a write up, I've been thinking about doing it, but have no time right now.

Check this out, it might prolong the life. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50430 It's a how to repack your timing pulley bearings. You could probably get away with doing it with the pulleys still on the engine with the belts in place, just try not to get the grease on the belts. Thanks to subeman90 for the write up.

[quote name='The Dude Abides']If this thing grenades is the motor done for or do i need to do a timeing belt kit. Ben[/quote] Nope, just a new timing belt kit. The engines are non-interference, meaning the valves won't hit each other or the pistons if the belts break.

Success Fixing 'Subaru Tap' Problem
[HTi]Johnson replied to Robert M's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yup, stick clacking away after installing a new pump. When I resealed the engine, I used anaerobic sealant, so I know the ports aren't clogged. Damn lifters. -
Success Fixing 'Subaru Tap' Problem
[HTi]Johnson replied to Robert M's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Agreed. I tried everything. Now I'm replacing the pump with a brand new spendy Subaru one. The next thing after that would be replacing the HVLAs themselves...I'm not about to do that. I'd rather save and do the EJ conversion that I've been wanting to do anyways.(Not saying that an EJ conversion is easier then replacing the HVLAs.) -
I've heard stories from a friend's coworker. Him and his other coworker built one of these for each car, and they say they get better mileage, like 14 mpg more. It could be that he changed his driving habits, but he swears he didn't. Check this out http://www.drivewater.com It's not about running it off complete hydrogen, it about mixing it in. I think if you want better MPG you gotta heat the fuel, not the air, it'll atomize better and ignite more thoroughly.

Sad sight in Camdenton, MO
[HTi]Johnson replied to cobcob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've heard that they are paying more for scrap steel then scrap aluminum right now. Steel prices are outrageous. That being said, you're going to see more cars getting crushed that shouldn't. -
Something could have rattled loose after all the driving? Don't you like how the Sube quits after it brings you back to safety? I drove 120 miles and then the subaru died a couple blocks from home. Turned out that I forgot to remove the pin on the idler pulley (ej), after a timing belt job and drove 120 miles with the damn thing bouncing.

[HTi]Johnson replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh I know it's not for sale. THis is the Service Reps rig. IT has a complete EJ swap in it. Don't know what engine. And a cool bumper. -
BINGO! SO, all is not lost, is it? Does she run? Hopefully things work out.
