Problems were after the tuneup. I dont believe it is the o2 simply because its showing lean on both banks. I originally thought the MAF but this model doesnt have that. I will pull a different plug and get a picture of it tonight. Signs of being lean to me, but I can smell fuel at the exhaust. Really dont want to risk burning the valves so I am trying not to use it at the moment. Trying to figure out how to get at the EGR without taking the intake off. Engine layout on this model is unpleasant to say the least. EZ30 was named ironically I think..

It has been running smooth, although it has a noticeable lack in power. My fault on the plugs, sent the wife to buy a set, guess I wasnt specific enough. Doesnt seem like stuck brakes. I did briefly had a hard to start/no start this week but I think it was rust on the battery terminals as opposed to the fuel issue.

Shaking a wrench at my Outback. (2001 h6 vdc) 120k miles, fairly recent tuneup.. new plugs (Autolite, not NGK unfortunately), oil change (5w30 full synthetic), new oil filter, new fuel filter, new PCV, new Fram air filter, and cleaned sludge out of the bottom of the antifreeze overflow with a refill. Had an oiled air filter in previously for less than 3000 miles and ended up with a CEL light right after the tuneup, new air filter has been in less than 300 miles. Reset CEL and hasnt come back, was showing P0171 and P0174. Mileage has gone from roughly 28mpg down to around 14. I have found nothing disconnected and no holes in my vacuum lines. I do have an ABS 71 code but I doubt that would effect things. Autolite plugs now have some glazing on them that look like overheating. No bubbles in my antifreeze, nothing in my oil either. Tire pressures are as marked on the door. I have also run Gumout fuel injector cleaner through as well with no noticeable change.

Thanks Hadnt come across that one. Mine is a 2001 so it should be a good start.. Baja just showed up so I already tore into it.. 120k on it and the owner has never done any sort of tuneup other than "a new belt." Havent checked the oil yet, but the air filter is one of the nastiest ones I have ever seen. Cabin air filter is missing, ton of leaves and crap in its place. Cant wait to see how the plugs look tomorrow.. Folks still got 26mpg on the way down though Have to say, looking at them I never thought the Baja had the same spirit as the Brat.. Drove it around today and its complete 180, still got the soul in there, and so many little features for the driver.. should have bought one years ago. *followup All 4 plugs had oil in the tube around the spark plug, but otherwise fine.. Sensor around cabin filter was disconnected waiting for filter to show up tomorrow, folks used the ac level 3 with it disconnected, heard a pop, and now level 3 doesnt work Assuming the resistor setup is similar to the Brat.. going to look at that next. Tailgate handle was stuck.. return spring all cruded up. Vehicle came from Minnesota so everything metal has a light-medium amount of rusting on it. Yep. Still a Brat.

It did drain the battery once... I was fortunate enough to be out in the country shooting.. far away from town Heat isnt necessary but im a bit ocd about things not working in my vehicles. I am thinking about a wire wall of some sort to keep the dogs out of the front seat.. its a VDC so I dont want to make the interior look cheap by adding toggle switches. Reset the ABS and the light didnt go out.. wonder if its an alignment issue or bad sensor.. be nice if it told me which one to check out.

Weber Fuel Economy Question
hanyou replied to benjamachine's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am getting right around 20mpg in city.. 10btc or 12 btc.. still 20mpg city. Folks are bringing it back north this week so I will get an update on highway, but it was 17mpg when I got it.. Mechanic adjusted the carb and had it well outside what it should have been, but oddly enough I got the same mpg that way as I do now. Car runs really smooth regardless and was supposedly rebuilt 50k ago. Unrelated, but... wife had the mechanic replace a CV boot while I was deployed and he claimed my thermostat was bad.. supposedly replaced it free of charge.. Wife pointed to my AC idleup and said he called it the thermostat.. also its the same piece as when I left :/ It doesnt idle any higher with it connected and the AC on though.. around 5-600 rpm, shaking the whole time. -
Gumout injector cleaner took the light off on the Outback.. Pulling code 71 for the ABS/VDC light. Going to reset the code and see if it comes back.. car was hit before I bought it so hoping its an old code before they fixed it. Dogs keep turning on the heated seats when they get left in the car so now my fuse is blown. again. Roll bar and push bar transfered over from my Gen 1 parts Brat to the driver.. need to seal an old bolt hole and redrill it so the water pump lines up right. Otherwise, everything is coming up Millhouse!

Playing with the Outback... Cleaned sludge out of the radiator, new fuel filter, now troubleshooting p0171 and po174. ABS and VDC light have been on since I bought it.. may or may not get around to that.. 104 out today x_x Finally got the rebuilt gen 2 Brat going, just need to do a few finishing touches and dial the Weber in better. Exhaust spacers are gone so probably going to run straight pipes instead. Folks swapping my Baja for my Brat next week.. First time I get to see it since they picked it up for me Probably going to be the only Baja in all Japan ^^

Can i see a pic of your weber setup.
hanyou replied to Greenley's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was afraid of that... I hooked it up to the solenoid that came with the brat and nothing happened, hooked it up to another one I had and.. nothing happened. -

Anyone happen to have pictures of the idleup setup for the ac with a Weber on? http://i.imgur.com/TI6cK.jpg The red circle connects to the solenoid correct? http://i.imgur.com/Ln0h2.jpg http://i.imgur.com/sAPLu.jpg Started randomly popping caps on the intake this week.. some oil coming out the top hose of the EGR.. Tried capping it entirely before but the motor wont run that way :s -

They were on the rig when I bought it.. only thing I saw on them was "Superior" written on the cap themselves. -

I forgot I previously figured it was 180 deg off and turned the disty. Put it back to where it should be and adjusted it a little more to where I thought was exactly on plug 1.. hit the cylinder with some starter fluid and it tried to start.. put a bit more down the carb and it idled until the fluid went out.. now to hook throttle cable back up and figure how I want to wire in the fuel pump. Perhaps working on the car until 3am wasnt a good idea Thanks for the help!

I bought an automatic 84 Brat with the intake manifold left off due to a broken bolt. Knowing nothing about its history, I rebuilt it and put a new Weber on it. It has new pistons, rings, and gaskets. Timing mark at 0 with cylinder 1 on TDC, distributor installed with rotor at spark plug 1. Plugs spark. I sprayed starter fluid down the carb and on another occassion into cylinder 1. Engine tries to crank but wont turn over. Spacer between the heads and y pipe is gone so I cannot hook up the exhaust, but because of this I did see a couple brief pops of fire. Sounded like a mild backfire but without it going it is kind of hard to adjust timing :s Fuel pump was on a toggle, jumped it to fill up my fuel filter but it only filled half way and kept trying to pump with no avail. Tank 1/2 - 3/4 full of fresh gas. Fuel problem, not enough pressure? Any thoughts?

Muffler/exhaust put on the gen 1, only a mere $300 only game around and pressed on time. Solved more wiring in gen 2, just need to put fuel pump and starter back stock and get front turn signals to not be solid on. Rings finally put on piston, grabbing compressor today and hopefully get the engine finished up. Cleaned Walmart out of 13" tires in preparation for the fleet's big move to South Dakota for storage while I move to Japan. 2000 Forester lined up to buy when I get there

Wore myself out trying to solve a problem that didnt exist.. Fuel wasnt getting to the carb so I swapped out my fuel pump with a spare, checked out the relay, checked hoses... and promptly realized the PO had wired a toggle switch for the power to the pump Bedlined, drilled out/threaded the broken bolts for my water pump, and finally got a belt on the sucker. Tailpipe support rusted through so PO also thought it logical to bend the tailpipe back over itself and stuff it up underneath My parts vehicle's pipe is toasted too. New pipe when I can legally drive it to the shop.
-
Poked at the gen 1 some more. New bedliner, spark plugs, disty cap, battery cables, plug wires, oil, gear oil for tranny, rear dif next. Removed A/C stuffs. Quad headlights swapped over to replace dual bulb setup.. Large duals are hard to find around here and both are smashed. Best of all.. hit of gas and starter fluid and she fired up and idled. Once I get the old broken water pump bolts out she will be good to go.. drill just spins around my extractor.. then broke the drill >.< PO bent the exhaust back on itself, so green gen 1 is gonna be a donor. Wiper motor too Valve cover was about gunked shut, same with most hoses. Red gen 2 getting bedlined over the coming long weekend, just wish I had the fabled tailgate trim.

The devil is that? I am off to Tokyo in Sep and can only bring the Outback with, I would love to pick one of those up -
Changing the timing bumped me from 18mpg city up to 24 Turning the car on makes the battery show in the red, even once it starts idling.. driving gets it back up to normal until I turn on the a/c. Autozone says battery was bad, threw in a brand new one.. same results :s Also, $120 for the cheapest new battery?! X_X

Subaru dealership in Corpus Christi had a handful framed on the walls, might know where to get more. Of course the lady helping at the time had no idea what a Brat was, so probably not the best people to contact >.>

conversion to weber carb, how too!!?
hanyou replied to wilcox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It would probably be beneficial to post make a sticky showing the procedure.. many of the old threads merely reference the other threads or have pictures that are broken links. The USMB guide isnt bad but the pictures arent close enough/detailed enough. Just my 2 cents.. -
Adjusted the timing in Blue.. 10 deg btdc down to 8. Seems to be shifting a bit smoother and has more get up n go at lower speeds, at least to my imagination First time timing a vehicle, surprisingly easy. Hopefully that helps the mpg a bit, suspect rear brakes are effecting it as well. Adjustment screw doesnt effect the spinning of the tire at all while messing with brakes, not a full spin at any adjustment :s
