Team Cf and I headed up hwy 6..to Sand lake...we took the less travelled route ..a snow excursion..at TSF.. a few inches of fresh snow..I had just put on new larger snow tires(upgraded from 185/70R14 to 205/75R14). We just couldn't resist the temptation. We managed to make it up to Hogsback and I promptly stuck myself in some deep chewd' up soft stuff.. I had packed some plywood boards for sand...it worked great for getting out of the rut...+ a quick pull...from Team CF.. We saw a huge (15+)group of Range rovers up there.. Once we headed down hwy 6 again and followed this minivan doin 40mph in a 55 zone..doh...we decided to pass the guy and he got on it when we were tryin to pass...I had plenty of time..to get by doin 70...Team Cf was abit behind and just made it by at 73.. a couple miles down the road a sherrif comes up behind us both.. I thought we'd never get pulled over in our underpowerd subes... We got off with a warning...whew:banana: We arrived for a perfect day at sand lake.. we did some fun exporlation on the North end...and some fun in this huge bowl..wahoo! I did get stuck in some soft stuff..so we broke out my plywood and Team cf gave me a nudge with a strap... I didn't break a rear cv... We had a blast! Ya really missed out on a full day of fun

Hey Scott, I got a set of new snows and upgraded a couple tire sizes from 185/70R14 to 205/75R14...now the tires fill the wheel wells ...Removed the front and rear mudflaps.. Installed a new park brake cable(driver side), prepped another rear CV.. The same day Team CF and I played in the snow at TSF..then hit sand lake:banana: a sea n' ski day...lol

I needed abit more juice to run lights & accessories.. We had one in the shop "freebe" So I modified the bracketry to fit the monster gm alternator. Abit of cutting /welding or the stock bracket and adjustment arm spacing(welding in shims of about 3/4"). as stock bracket are easy to find in upullit. I used a napa belt Pn# 25-1365 The car idles and runs better overall and lights are brighter..single best upgrade yet ...

Do the ea81 hatches have rear bump stops to limit suspension travel? I see the wagons do.. anyone have pics with them.. I'm having issues with too much travel and breaking rear cv's on easy hill climbs in soft stuff like snow/sand. (note: it's got an SJR 4" lift installed and rancho rs5241 in the rear so I get more travel than stock upward..) Perhaps I need to fabricate some up?

I'm in ... maybe I'll fab up an offroad bumper for the occassion... Perhaps some biker goggles and skull face bandana.... Everyone needs a pirate x-bones flag on their soob... We need Cmiller to video the Xing of the dunes...en mass...with some mad max music..edited in...lol

I've been busy over the holidays...my camera finally died so I got a new one... I got an Accel supercoil for $25...fabbed a custom bracket plus some new Accel wires, Ngk plugs and fuel filters changed.. The am/fm stock radio was killing me after awhile...I hunted on Craigslist and found a used Premier cd/radio for $35 and new 5.25" 3-wayspeakers $20 for the rear( I used the side pockets in the rear ) Abit of plywood/cutout,speaker fabric and some self drilling screws to mount them. The front speakers I used a 3.5" coaxials for $9.95 via the net in the stock locations..with minor modification to mount. The slant radio console I cutout the am/fm radio slot to fit the new headunit in place . I went to tap plastics and bought some scrap and had them cut it out for me and I mounted via screws over the old fascia. I then decided to use up some black plastic paint I had and paint the console to match the new fascia.. The Gm 100amp alt conversion is next...

No pics ..been too busy with the boy...sledding..snowball fights... Of course I've been drivng my soobs..the outback gets around just fine...I did chain up all four though as the icy roads and due to pdx /wash/yamhill counties requiring chains on...The hatch is great in the snow lots o' donuts/cookies . We've got around 14" now in Newberg after this morn... Yesterday, I helped this guy with an ea82 wagon in sherwood overheating/w no heat(t-stat/low coolant)..drove him to safeway/back to get some coolant..Then in newberg helped a minivan get out of a ditch on 99w at the bottom of rex hill. Then helped this old lady at Newberg fred meyer scape ice/snow off her car..she had to been in her 80's..(pretty tough /determined woman..)

ea 81 dash speaker upgrade 3"-3.5" ?
scoobyclimbs replied to scoobyclimbs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So I take it you completely misread what I wrote in the thread... This is a wheeler so the door speakers maybe submerged...and I like using the side pockets for tools, tire psi guage. I have no room for the box speaker setup in the rear...recovery gear goes there, tools...spare rear axle...( i'm using the the stock location) I'm keeping the rear seat so my son can go wheelin' too... -
It's time to upgrade my '84 hatch to some new cones ... Not that I don't love the sound of my sube as it roars @ WOT I'm thinkin of 3" dia or 3.5" coaxials in the dash...anyone fit those sizes in ok? The bulk of the sound will be from the rear 5.25" speakers...more fader.. It's a wheeler so door speakers are out of the question...burble...burble Besides my screwdrivers ,tire psi guage fits nicely in the pockets..

Right on! Master of the mtn...Subaru does it again! Doh!...I didn't even get out.... I spent a few hours putting insulating plastic over the windows (alot warmer in da house now..). I would have been ready to go....No one called me including Michael... Yea It looked like alot of idiots out there... I'm hoping to get another truck in the shop , so I can do a headgasket...on a cummins..I have two trannys to do.. so I hope to stay in the warm shop this week...{{{BURRR}}} The teens are not fun to wrench in.

-
Sounds kewl...Yeah I think HR grease ya slipped on will be there... I'll be there early..8:30am
-
I'll be there! I just finished my front skidplate/mated to the bashplate..bomber:banana: Tommorrow I plan on doing my exhaust/muffler/raising the diff/plus axle seals.
-
Mindyou my son was in the hatch ..so rolling over was not an option...! Maybe when I weld in a rollbar.. It was so greasy..and when the back end started to come around "ok were havin fun now "Mudterrains would have been the tire of choice that day..The FWD option is nice to have when your in a jam..we still had to anchor the back to keep it from sliding...

scoobyclimbs replied to cmiller's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
nice work:drunk: Hows this Sunday for wheelin ... Team CF and I are always out and about...let's go wheelin' ! Don't forget the HP X-mas tree run..! I need to do the swap myself as my 4spd has a bad 3rd gear syncro and no hi range.. For the switch I would make it the turbo boost(Blower) switch ya know like the madmax intercepter...lol -
Rancho Shock Part number for 4" longer Shocks
scoobyclimbs replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Off Road

In my opinion as a mechanic I think the terrain (uneven/offcamber) one wheel was a foot off the ground . I gassed it and the other side caught shock loading the powertransfer thru the welded diff. and the weakest link was the cup. I will reset the rear to 4" if that's what you recommend Scott...

After all the work done it was time to take the virgin hatch out wheelin'.. A nice cruise out to TSF(Tillamook state Forest) we hit some trails.. The hatch performed flawlessly all day... I was happy until we got to the infamous hill that took out Chaz's diff..! I cleaned it the first time no problem..I did the second time with a bad line..and too much throttle ..{{{bang}} the left rear axle inner cup exploded..DOH! No biggie I removed the axle and we wheeled all day after that...

I also found some PIAA 520 fogs I mounted on the bumper. They were $60 like new from craigslist. They were chrome so I painted the covers with some black plastic paint I had.
