I know Mt.Hood pretty well The best wheein on the East side of Hood are near Green point upper resivour, Middle mtn, surveyors ridge , fir mtn . The North side...Lolo pass doesn't offer much but nice scenery photo ops. There's some nice hidden camp spots too... Although I did find a kewl creek x-ing and some nice shade for summer runs. Winter time Lolo pass is awesome! The South side ...Still creek basin is kewl especially in winter Chaz and I explored it abit last year. If ya follow still creek all the way to sherar burn rd(fs 2613) you can get within a mile to devils peak lookout tower 5,045ft. nice hike . It is an awesome winter drive when the gate is open!!! SE Hood ...Badger lake , gunsight butte are nice too...best in winter!!! Before they close the gates! FS rd 4610 is easy and can be done with a two wheel drive I did back in '90...there are lots of fun spurs and quarries.. Olallie lake scenic area (old skyline rd)is good too...there are some challenging sections following the powerlines up from hwy 46 ...early Winter driving is good... Although I haven't ventured much at wildcat, goat mtn yet.. Mollala does have some kewl stuff there also.. My weekends are pretty much free:headbang: my cell 503-314-7535

I hate to be the one to warn you ...your ring/pinion maybe toast if you drove it much like that..Those bearings and side case retainers are what set the preload on your ring /pinion. In effect you could have some damage and not know it.. Try getting a pen light and look through the trans dipstick tube while some one turns the wheels (while jacked up ) you can see the gears somewhat. I would drain the front differential and run a magnet up in the housing ...hope for no metal flakes or shavings..chunks... I just rebuilt my front diff. so my subie heart goes out to ya.... Hope for the best...

You shouldn't have a problem...mind you I had no spotter (2 1/2yr son. strapped in) I got away with minor scratches .. There's a few whoop-dee doos and it gets tight in the trees...I had one guy on a dirt bike tell me halfway in midpoint near the view)"It's 76" maximum width!" I replied "How do ya think I got here ...? air dropped from a chopper!" . I chuckled.. Before I even attempted it I asked some hardcore jeeper/rangerover folks What's it like.. ? They said " you wouldn't have enough clearance.." Did I prove them wrong..! I also noticed their tires and body panel scraps on the bolders... I laughed to myself " I cleaned that with no spotter...lol!" I also ran into some really cool jeeper folks there they thought it was way kewl my outback could do it..! Once I finished I came back down to the start and helped them fix a busted brake line ... The end is ugly (optional)...ya need a 4" lifted rig and mudterrains for it...lots of bolders and ugly ruts! call me when ya wanna go...I'm game to go down again! 503-314-7535:headbang:

Whoa! Hold on here..this was done on a legal Firebreak rd. ..it's not used much and abit overgrown. ...even the St. Forest map shows it as a rd. ! A cat cleared that trail for slash burning...note : clear cut area the photos are taken... I stay off all Illegal trails...! Wheelers and ATV folks can co-exist! The signage at Tillamook st. forest is very clear! It will show a jeep, quad, or dirt bike ...some are open to all uses ...example: Let's not put our foot in mouth before all the facts are present! Just because a rd becomes narrow and overgrown and few have been on it doesn't mean it's a quad trail...but "quad sized" refering to tightness. I think most of us here like the quad sized trails or " jeep double track with overgrowth . " here's an overgrown road..for ya as an example ...also in Tillamook st. forest...near Triangulation pt.

I had some fun on a road turned to quad trail...note the drivers view I was teetering on two wheels... http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9183

Yeppers! I'm back on the road....Wahoo! she drives like new... I did a complete rebuild of the front differential and dialed it in. I could only work on it after work for a few hours here and there. It was actually a fairly easy job...just time consuming...(getting parts....I purchased the only carrier(spider) gears in town....no one had them...). I'll post more pics of the teardown and aftermath.....
-
here's some update on my progress...I pulled the 4EAT out and dissasembled the f. diff and replaced the pinion gear/bearing (wasted). Also the ring gear...I didn't like the pitting I found on the spider gears so I'm replacing those too. I went down to Rallitek's new shop(nice facility) and met Marc....kewl guy. Picked up a trans mount bushing insert. for $29.00 ...might as well upgrade while it's out. Here's few pics before the camera batt. died. Note: the wasted pinon gear!
