  1. Hello. Its been awhile since I have been here. This is my 3rd subaru my first was a '67 Subaru wagon my second was a '?? 75 I think Legacy. And now this is a 2003 Subaru Baja 4cyl. AWD. The CEL has been on for sometime now since I bought it. The guy said I needed a new O2 sensor. (this has not been done) Whenever it rains or has rainded and it is very humid or wet weather the car will start upon first start on my way to work .. I then drive about 15 miles and stop to get coffee .. Then when I go to leave the car simply turns over but will not start. If I leave the car for awhile (8 hours since I walk the rest of the way to work) and then return. The car starts fine. I took it to a guy today to read the codes for me and he gave me these numbers: P0420 P0340 P0420 However this was a few days AFTER I have had trouble in the rain .. It only happens when it rains or is humid or very wet out It will start in the morning and let me drive it just fine. But if I shutoff the engine and go back to it a few minutes later.. The car simply turns over until It sounds like I am going to kill my battery then I walk away and walk to work. ... not the best solution at least im not far from work (aobut 3 blocks). not that that matters. Any help appreciated.
  2. Hi there.. you had answered a post of mine and noticed I was close by. Do you work on Subarus? It is possible I need new rear struts and wouldnt mind paying a suby expert to help me if you can.

  3. Hello again my friends.. So.. I have a question I hope someone can help me figure this out. I have p185 75 R14's tires on my 1992 Legacy. I realize that this is a heavy car, even heavier than my other corsica I had. When I was jacking up this legacy to check the brakes and change a flat tire... It was very evident on my jack and on how hard it was to pump it how heavy this car is. When I make a turn and i'm going fairly fast.. not speeding .. but lets say at 25mph... and there are bumps in the road. The whole dang car starts to hop over into the next lane. Is there something wrong with the under carriage? Is it just too heavy? Are the struts bad or something? I have noticed if I go over a break in a road the back makes a lound thump sound. But if I go over speed bumps at slow speed Its a smooth ride. I'm confused. Thanks for help.
  4. First I'd like to say im not a subaru expert but I have worked on cars quite a bit in my day as I usually cant afford to take my vehicles to a proper dealr shop or other shop. First sign of my alternator taking the plunge was intermittent starts. I suggest you start up your subaru and then take off one of your battery cables. If the car dies, its your alternator. It may be that your alternator just isnt putting out enough juice to charge the battery fully. A simple test at a local auto store could hook it up to a tester for you. (usually a free deal in hopes you buy a battery or alternator from them) As far as over heating goes. Are you sure your water pump is circulating ok? I wonder if maybe you got ' another ' bad thermostat. It could happen. Good luck with your Subaru woes.
  5. Hey ... theres a subaru master that lives near me!!! woohooo!! Ok .. so I tried the loose lug nuts drive and brake forwards and backwards. This did not work. I called a Walker Tire and they said it would cost me 35.00 to put it on the lift and then whatever time it took to get it off if they have to cut a lug or whatever blah blah.. Called a few other places and ended up going to this used tire shop near my home and they took a Large Ball Peen looking hammer and wacked the heck out of the ' tire ' not the rim. And got it off. Took him 3 hits tho. He was surprised. He only charged me 6 bux yayy. He Quoted me 15. I gave him 10. Anyway I am hoping this weekend I can get to that oil pressure sensor... I hate taking off the Alternator again but oh well. As a side note, I hope this car gets around good in the snow. Should I do anything else to winterize it besides checking radiator fluid and changing oil? Thanks for all the tips.
  6. Hello. Its me again. I know my first post was kind of obnoxious and seemed like I didn't need help. But I am really excited about fixing my car and wanted to ask a few more questions. I went to a junkyard and found a poor subaru that looked just like mine except it was all wheel drive and an automatic. The tires were in better shape and were alloy so I took all 4. And I snagged the heater/AC control unit (wow was that easy to get off) A bunch of main fuses from under the hood, and what I think is the oil pressure sensor. Problem 1. I cant get the old / original tire off the front right. It wont let go of the center I presume. All the lugs come off ok but the tire will not budge at all! Problem 2. When I was going to replace the oil pressure sensor with the one from the junky car. The nut/ bolt thingy that the sensor goes into came out along with the sensor. When I put it back, it appears to be leaking all over the place with fresh oil in and around and on top of it. Do I take it back off and use some kind of thread lock on the nut bolt thing and the sensor? Or .. I'm not sure what to do. I wanted to add more info onto what I did that may have fixed my original problem of hard cold start. There is a rubber grommet that holds on the plastic engine ' cover ' that says subaru 16 valve blah blah ' It looked like the ruber gromet melted into the throttle body. It was simply covered in this black muck. I thought it was some kind of cover for the springs. But then I thought.. what happend to the gromets on that side. and thought it must have melted into the springs. Anyway I sprayed it down with water and used a tooth brush and scrubbed it till it was shiny.. then sprayed it with some solvent.... then doused it with Houdini. That may have fixed my original problem. Anyway .. any help and advice appreciated.
  7. I agree throwing parts at it is not the answer. But I am getting a little desperate since its getting colder and it doesnt want to start when its cold outside or in the morning its my only way to work. Plus the sensor was only 22.00 and I bought a 19mm deepwell for 5 bux and some high temp thread seal for 5 bux. I figured for 32.00 if I get it working I'ts better than what it seems like other people try to replace (the MAF). (from reading all over the web) I replaced the coolant temp sensor. It was actually pretty easy. I broke the old one getting it out, but I was going to test it when I removed it.. but this is moot now. I read a procedure on here to reset the computer by pulling the fuse and letting it sit overnight and put it back in and let it run for 15 mins. I tried this procedure this morning. The car started it up right away and the fans did not go on (until it got warmed up). And there is no CEL on. Its strange to me that it seems the computer kept thinking there was a problem when there wasnt. Or theres something elese wrong and it was a fluke that it started up right away. ( its about 65 degrees outside now) Anyway thanks for the responses.
  8. Well to add to this post even tho I've not gotten help yet I thought it was the engine coolant sensor, because the cooling fans would go on before I even started the car. So I replaced that today... still no love. I think I got all the codes out of the check engine light today also. It was kinda hard to read.. but here they are: 31 13 21 11 12 Sure hope someone can help
  9. Hello, Please Help. I have a 1992 Subaru Legacy it has 150 thousand miles on it and I bought it used from a private owner about 8 months ago. The car ran just fine during this time. Then one day I turned on the AC and the car began squeeking loudly and the Check Engnine Light came on. I was on my way to work so I just thought ok ...the AC is out. The next day I tried to start my car and the car would not start. Come to find out that it was the Alternator squeeking loudly and needed to be replaced. I used to work on cars back in high school and this replacement seemed pretty simple so I did it myself since the Shopts wanted 600.00 to replace it. The Check Engine Light never went out it is still on and its been getting colder and the car turns over but does not seem to want to start. After reading all over I thought it was the MAF sensor so I took that off and sprayed it really good with the CRC stuff from the auto store. This has not resolved the problem. The car does not want to start in the morning. Sometimes I can hold the throttle to the floor and it will start and stutter for a bit until taking off. It will then bog down if I try to use the accelerator too soon. But if I let it warm up a bit and after running for awhile, the car seems to run fine. Please help.
