Cheapest Catalytic Converter Solution
desertsubaru replied to Bill90Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Most you pullits dont care. Besides most of the guys where you pay dont know that the cat on a sube is part of the y pipe. I got lucky when I lived in AZ and found a good y pipe that the cat was already hollowed out. Federal law also says you must enter the country legally but they dont do a very good job inforcing it.:-\ -

Most of the times the you pullits dont touch anything but the gas tank. The problem though is you got to get it before the junkyard vultures get to them. Around here we have upulls and a group of lets say not so legal people stand out side all day and wait for a car to come in. AS soon as they put it on the ground they swoop in and strip it then take the parts to a garage or whatever then re sell them. They usaly dont touch old subes, they just want the ricer cars. -
6 vs. 6 and a half
desertsubaru replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I went from an 86 carbed Ea82 engine to a 90 and used the same disty. My redline now is close to 6800rpm from the 6000 of the 86 engine. I think its more to do with the cams and the compression then the disty. -
The things you do to get home
desertsubaru replied to desertsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think most people that drive old subes have some Mac in them. -
Was on my way home today when my throttle cable snapped. So i took it apart near the carb, cut some of the case back, took my needlenose vise grips and clamped it back together. Made it the rest of the way home with no problem. Are all ea82 throttle cables the same? How big of a job to replace it?

If you would go to the junkyard and pull the whole y pipe they would not know it was used.Besides it would be replaced with an OEM one from another sube. -

Junkyard or if you dont have to have it, have someone make up a pipe to replace it. -
where do I buy 505 15 inch rim tires?
desertsubaru replied to HATCHY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Last time I checked they were $250 plus. I did find a place in England that had them used and was willing to ship four for $250 do a search for kingpin tires. -

You can but its still a pain if you have everything in your way. Its your car so do what you want. My bolts wouldt come out so I just ripped them off. Becarful you dont hit your Radiator. -
I bought an engine that set for 4 years and after I put it in my car it fired right up. Had one heck of a tod untill the HLAs got pumped up but ran very well untill I cracked a head and it still ran but I changed it with another engine untill I can replace the heads.

carb gasket question??
desertsubaru replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I use this stuff called, super "300" gasket sealer form a gasket. Its real sticky but can be brushed on(Brush in can). It also wont degrade because of gas. -
Brake pads can make a HUGE difference.
desertsubaru replied to WoodsWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had that same thing happen on mine with13 inch tires. It just took an hour of driving to lets say ruff the new pads up. After that mine worked great. I put a set of those $12 pads on and they lasted 3 1/2 years on the front of my sube. Even going 3000 miles with 800 pounds in the car didnt ware them out. Your right wagner is a better pad though. -

Longest trip in a Loyale
desertsubaru replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Went from Sedona AZ to northeast Pa with 800 pounds of stuff in the back. In Kansas my carb started acting up but she kept on chugging at 75 mph with hardly a struggle. It was in the 90s all the way untill Kentucky when it started raining and the temp dropped to like 50. Oh and the engine had 198.000 miles on it at the time. -
I could see why this car was there! Rust from one end of the frame to the next, it was so bad the rear diff was just hanging there. The engine only has 124k on it but it was an auto. It did have a good hicrappy carb on it.

Got a brand new 2 core radiator $30. Plus a rebuilt Disty out of The new ringold PA u pull. There was an xt withs some good parts. and a few other Ea82s and a Ea81 wagon.

I forgot to ask about relays!

So there is no circut board to fry in the disty thats cool! Thanks GD once again you the man!
-
Could you take a disty from a sube that has points and put it in a EA82? My friends son is doing a project at his school about EMPs. Since my car dont have a ECU but does have electronic ignition that I know will fry. So I want to put points in it and do the test.
