desertsubaru replied to SoobGoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey you stole my car:banana: But mines not a turbo and thats the way it looked when I moved from AZ to PA. I had about 700 pounds of stuff in my car on the way back:clap: I have only seen 4 in this color now. Is that a factory sun roof? -
I think I need to disable my choke...
desertsubaru replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a manual choke and have no problems with it starting or running. With this set up you know when its open or closed. Knob pulled out closed knob pushed in open. -
ea82 swapping long blocks
desertsubaru replied to pheonix165's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just did a swap from a 91 Ea82 into my 86 ea 82 carbed wagon and all i had to do is put the carb/intake and disty onto the 91 block and it runs great except for my carb is on its way out. When the carb was good i could take it up to allmost 7000 rpms with no problem and get over 30 mpg. The 91 has more compression so its got a little more horeses and torque. Have fun everything should just bolt on. It took me 5 hours to do a total swap up and running. -
Rust Prevention- Best Method, Hot Oil?

Didnt you know that WD 40 is mostly fish oil? -
Rust! Break it to me gently.
desertsubaru replied to yorab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Say goodbye to that car because that is a bad spot for rust. It could be fixed but the cost would be to great to bother with. Keep it for parts and find another sube to take its place. Sorry to tell you this but I live in PA and if you dont keep on top of the rust it kills the car real fast. -

Rust Prevention- Best Method, Hot Oil?
desertsubaru replied to Milemaker13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My 86 wagon leaks oil and it sprayed all the way to the rear diff. I have gone through three pennsylvania winters and still no rust, So oil does prevent rust. -
I added a clutch fan and look what it does!

Dirt + water in gas, killed my idle
desertsubaru replied to Konyak's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hicrappy carbs are known to do that. Mine did it to often and never really did find a cause. Most likely you got some dirt in the carb. I know that was one of my problems. Try running some cleaner or seafoam in the tank and see if that helps. If not then a rebuild or a weber is the next step. Put some dry gas in the tank for the water. -
Yea i just lost 2 days working on this thing. It was well worth it:grin: The newer engine 1990 (180.00k) runs better then the 86 ever did! Lots more power and the pick up is out of this world. GD how much more horsepower does the 90 have then the 86 and how much did I loose putting the carb(holley 5200) on. I know I should have just did the spfi swap but dont have the funds for it at this time. Next month Im getting a 90 for a parts car so in the spring it will get done. Another reason I didnt do the swap is my y pipe dosent have the bung for the o2 senser and I dont have a way to weld one on. Thanks for the help!

No problem I have one. But how did it fry by just taking it off and setting it aside and then putting it back on.

I did a search but no thread on this problem. 86 Ea82 4x4 wagon carbed. I just did my engine swap that went very well but I have a small problem. My charge light stays on but the gauge is on 13 except at higher RPMs then it goes up to allmost 18. The gauge goes up when I hit a bump sometimes to and the head and dash lights get brighter but then when I slow down it goes back to normal and the charge light dims some. Im sure Its a ground but the grounds I took off I put back where they came from. Oh and the parking brake light stays on dim to.

Whats emission testing? We dont have it where i live in PA but 25 miles south they do. When we get our cars inspected once a year they are suppose to look and see if you have a cat and ths pcv hooked up but where I go I use to work for they guy so its give me the $30 and pull it in the bay.

86 GL what to ask, look for, prior to purchase
desertsubaru replied to wp96's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
First thing to look for is a lower price! That is way to high for an old sube like that unless he wants to fix whats wrong with it. -
First engine I retired because of old age it still ran but was beat to heck I still have It for parts and the heads are gen 1 with no cracks . Second engine still runs great yet except the HGs took a poop because of over heat, but still is a strong engine so I plan to do every thing to it when i take it out. I will be able to hear all four engines in JY run as they all are there rust. yes i plan to let them run untill i know they dont over heat. My carbed intakes egr is blocked off so no problem there. What the heck for A $150 this last engine has been a great runner. I allso have a tendency to lets say be a little hard on my engines, not changing oil on time and stuff like that. Lets Face it I beat the heck out of this car and she has never left me on side of the road.

After more testing I know for sure its HG. I pulled the pcv hoses off the valve covers and steam was coming out of both. I pluged the coolent line that goes to the carb Allso just in case. So now next saturday I get to pick out of 4 different subes with Ea82s, 88 to 92 All spfi. $150 pulled with out intake and alt. I dont have ac so not worried about that. Well this will be this cars third engine but still plan to do HGs and reseal on this engine because its only at 125.00 miles. It did over heat on me a couple of weaks ago so thats life. Any thing I should look for on these engines? Im use to 86 and older so I dont know to much about newer Ea82s. Then i get to put it in old school by putting hoist on 6 inch round oak tree limb in 30 or 40f weather

What about with the carb on it? Still more power? The engine I can get dosent come with the intake just a long block. I need to get this done ASAP because its my only car.
