  1. seems like you and i have the same beliefs. its good to find other people who like restoring cars the way i do. good luck with everything, keep posting how your work is going, and dont forget pics. pics are always nice.
  2. what you anyone recommend i use to get the carbon buildup off my intake valves? there's a ton of it on the intake valves on both heads.
  3. now theres some smart thinkin! i bet no one else has ever thought of that.
  4. yo, i dont remember where i say this, but someone put the dual transfer case in a Legacy. if anything, thats what you should do. front wheel drive for around town and fuel economy, and 4 wheel drive for screwing around. oh, and snow. but if you have the time, and just a little bit more money then what it would cost to do the EA82 swap (just stay out of that, listen to GD) you should just do the EJ22 swap. its the same cost for all the overhaul parts for the EJ22, and they are easier to get, the only thing you have to do differently is a bell housing adapter (talking about the dual ranger case here) and have your flywheel bolt pattern modded so your ea82 flywheel bolts up to the ej22 crank. now, what GD said about just letting the cars rot, you dont need to do that. take which ever one is in the best condition and restore it. then do a ej22 swap, if your capable of handling all the re-wiring your gonna have to do. also, i might add that restoring and rebuilding is much more fun, educational, but also harder and more work then buying a good condition car. my belief is in building cars pretty much myself by getting POS's that need work and making them like brand new again. and the great thing is, so far in life each one has payed off. also, you can have waaaaaaaaay more pride in a car that you put tones of blood and sweat into. like the 1988 GL-10 i just bought. bought it with a cracked block. got a junk yard EA82 turbo engine, completely rebuilding it, gotta do a little body work (3 dents, 2 small, 1 large) and then im repainting the car. definitely will be a lot more pride (for me) with my car then going out and buy something new thats already built. where in the hell is the fun in that????? so, good luck on making your decision.
  5. hey, i have a 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager with a 3.8 liter V-6. i recently gutted out the catalytic converter cause it was sooo plug, it could barely accelerate and was costing me mileage. the old housing for the cat is still there (which i believe the rattling noise might be coming from) but it didnt rattle before. my dad has 1996 Plymouth grand voyage with a 3.3 (the p.o.s. motor) and the exhaust makes the same noise, and he still has the cat in his exhaust. i have checked everything on the whole exhaust system and im coming up with no answers. i have tried asking every one i could think of but no one else could figure it out. ("everyone i could think of" probably amounts to about 10 people cause i dont really know many people or have many friends.)
  6. your machine sounds the steal deal for the end of time, but your kinda wrong about the cleaner i used. i did not hurt my hand at all, did a wonderful job at cleaning, doesnt smell horrible (was even using the machine in my garage so im not in the cold) and i did not have any problems. oh, also forgot to add, the stuff i bought is biodegradable. does any one have any clue what cleaner the pro's use when cleaning fuel injectors? after some research online and talk with my 24-year-career automotive teacher, i found out the pro's use sonic scrub just like the one i have, and they flush out the injectors while holding them open while having them hooked up to power. i have everything i would need to do it the way they do except a good recommended cleaner. any suggestions?
  7. like what cleaners do you use and how do you get them to clean affectivly? i recently bought a 1 gallon jug of this cleaner called Purple Power and dumped the whole thing into a sonic scrub machine that my grandparents have, and i have been able to effortlessly clean my engine parts spotless. i completely tore down my intake manifold for the 1988 GL-10, removed all electronic parts, and anything else that could come off and washed the thing till it looked brand new. only took me about 45 minutes to get it completely clean. now, not everyone on here would have one of these 20,000 dollar sonic scrub machines like i do, so i was wondering what other ways you people clean parts. oh, and most importantly, i was wanting to know what you people would recommend for a good cleaner. my machine is 100 percent stainless steel, so no cleaners would hurt it. (cept maybe acid.)
  8. after doing more checking on the EA82 turbo motor from the overheated 1988 Subaru GL-10 i just picked up, i found out that the cylinder is cracked on number 3. i guess not only did the guy over heat the poor thing, but then he went and poured cold water in it.
  9. 1987 Subaru GL wagon. EA82 carbed, 5 speed manual w/ dual range transfer case. hit 200,000 miles about a month ago. atm, has 201,234 miles.
  10. what in the world???? O.O i just ************ my pants when i saw this pic of your Subaru. your Subaru is the same everything as mine to a 98 percent degree (from just what i see in the pic) you car is the same color, same color interior, same wheels, some make, year, model, same everything as the one i just bought and on the same freaking date. WTF???? the only difference i can see between yours and mine, is mine has the fully opening glass moon roof.
  11. yes, i would love to know if this is a good idea for the heads. i have a friend that has all the stuff to port and polish the heads for my soobie. would it be a good idea to have that done?
  12. ok, what exactly is so bad about the stock turbos? do they not produce enough to actually do any good? are they a POS that break often? and how much is that TD04 gonna cost? o.o and trust me, i wouldnt over boost it, i really actually dont want to do to much to this motor, i just bought this car cause i love these station wagons and wanted to be able to enjoy it for what it is, a turbo Subaru Station wagon which i have wanted my whole love. (plus my girlfriend totally digs it. *thumbs up*) but yeah, if i ever did get one of those TD04's what would be the recommended boost? by your opinion that is. and like i said before, im gonna be running a air/water intercooler, which unless im convinced to do otherwise, is gonna be the only non factory thing im gonna do, cause i just straight up cant stand the idea that subaru made it to where that hot air coming from the turbo goes straight into the motor. oh, and i am starting "fresh" with the motor. i bought a motor from the junk yard for only 250 dollars when i first signed up for this place (that when people started giving me hell about the EA82) i have completely disassembled it and im going to fully rebuild it. oh, and forgot to mention that it has 60,000 less miles then the motor in the car that i just bought and am talking about. oh, and just found out today after more "checking out" of the motor and block. the car i bought, i bought it cause of a blown head gasket right? well i think wrong, whether the guy knew it or not, he over heated the car soo badly that it cracked the cylinder wall in piston number 3. the guy told me it overheated cause the thermostat stuck. but yeah, im done talking now.
  13. yes i have read that thread, the whole thing, really didnt like the stuff i read. but maybe i should read it again. its been a while. but yeah, i planned on putting on an inter cooler anyway. im putting on a air/water inter cooler. and im aware of the detonation issue that would incur from using the higher compression rings/pistons. i just make up for that by using higher octane (premium) gasoline.
  14. hey people, im back. i was wondering, would it hurt anything if i wanted to run the higher compression pistons and rings from a non turbo EA82 in my Turbo EA82? it wont burn holes in my pistons or burn up the valves will it? just wondering. didnt do it, fyi, just a question.
  15. other people will be more helpful with motor help, but i can definetally tell ya that that rust on there is very common. get it sanded down and filled in before it spreads. if your gonna paint it i hope your ready. i have paint guns, all the mixing equipment, air compressor and such. did a full repaint on my 1987 Subaru GL wagon carb. masking everything off is the most pain staking part.
  16. which fendors are you looking for? i live in washington state, and the local junk yard where i live has about 6 of those old subaru's that still have perfectly straight bodies. just deponds on what you need.

  17. i've desided to take a break for a while, but would like to get this back on topic, if you all please. i will still be checking on this once in while to see if anyone has posted any new ideas. also, i would like to ask a few "on topic" things before i leave. the question was getting power out of the EA82 turbo engines. but what i would like to re-ask is what can i do to squeeze what i can out of it w/o a lot of money. i have felpro head gaskets like one of the admins had told me to use to make the HG's last longer. and some "more power" things i was gonna do on my own was get rid of the cats and make the exhaust straight so it breaths better, try to get a K&N cone air filter or equivilent, and the air/water inter cooler. anything else someone would like to add would be nice. someone mentioned some monitoring gages or something to keep the exhaust temp in check, and something to keep the head temps in check. also, people have mentioned strict cooling maintainence, like keeping hoses replaced and thermostat replacement. thats really all i can think of/remember.
  18. thanks for trying to boost my confidence about my cars a little, but i dont think 2 nice people is enough to make me stay. im going to restore these cars as best i can. the one i just bought, 1988 GL-10 wagon, besides needing that head gasket (which was all it needed) is a gem. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. the interior is spotless, no tears on the seats, still has factory original floor mats inside, floors are spotless, carpet in perfect condition, paint is almost perfect besides the normal rock chips that they all have, im gonna repaint the engine hood. but anyway. i might poke in once in a while to try and look for answers using the search and stuff and read threads, but i dont think i will be posting questions anymore, for GD's sake. i bet we are both on the brink of blowing a head gasket; him because of me, and me because of him.
  19. i specifically said 75 lbs(short for pounds) i didnt say 75 psi did i? i know what i said.
  20. GD, the reason im not going to O-ring the block is 1, cause i is too expensive like you said it would be, 2, there is no machine shop locally that would do it for me cause they dont have the know how, and 3, im not trying to build a 500+hp motor thats gonna be pushing 15+ pounds of boost, hell, i probably wont even up the boost, my friend (god, his name is Tanner, im tired of saying "my friend) tanner is the one who keeps wanting me to up the boost and do all this other ************, like the steel HG, connecting rods, ect. i would just like to keep the motor the way it is. im still going to do the AWIC though, cause i know it will help. and i know YOU didnt say anything about the connecting rods being a problem if i want to up the boost, other people did. this isnt the only website im using for research ya know. but, if you please, would you mind telling me about the connecting rods? would they really hold up to more boost w/o having to buy different ones? hell, instead of upping the boost, could i just up the compression? what would that do to my motor? oh, GD, i google Cometic and checked out their website, found this cool thing that lets you choose what car you want to look for a head gasket for, but under Subaru, the EA82 doesnt show up. would i have to call them about it?
  21. damn, i cant believe the HG's held up to that. and how did you get to 75 lbs with out bustin a head bolt off? and were you also running different connecting rods? cause i now for a fact that if you try to go over the 7lb boost that the system already puts out your gonna have problems.
  22. my automotive teacher told me all about the o-ring block thing, so im definitely not going to do that. the number one thing i would like to find is a good set of connecting rods and pistons. for the head gaskets, i have a connection who is going to hook me up with some multi-layer steel headgaskets, the kind of head gaskets they have on dirtbikes and quads. i would love to get a set of those ARP head bolts that GD was talking about, but for now i guess i will just go with OEM ones.
  23. im going to get a water/air intercooler for my 1988 Subaru GL-10 turbo wagon, and completely gut the exhaust system of the cats to help it flow better, and try a cold air intake with one of those cone air filters. but, what else can i do to make this engine a little bit better? GD, i have heard everything you could ever want to say to me about how bad the EA82 turbo is, but look at it this way, its not your problem its mine, and i really appreciate your help and advise, so if you could put aside all of your opinions on how bad this motor is, i would like help with some performance ideas and/or things that could make this motor better. a friend of mine told me to ask about these specific things: after market connecting rods better pistons and rings head gaskets that will hold up and also i used the search and read about cooling system maintainence and replacing the cooling lines and such every year, so i will keep up with that. also, im fitting the car with dual electric cooling fans with a adjustable thermostat switch for the fans. also, what temp thermostat would anyone recommend for the EA82 turbo?
