alright, well you said earlier the best inter coolers are the water/air inter coolers, so im gonna buy one. well, actually, my friend is going to buy one for me and we are going to trade intercoolers cause he wants my front mount intercooler for his Honda. -

yes, thank you, all of this information is extremely helpful. but at the same time, doing a top mount inter cooler, does this mean that im going to have to cut a hole in my hood and but a little roof scoop like the wrx's have? -

it actually wasnt used for engine oil the first time. my grandpa gave me this big old transmission cooler that im going to fit up to use as a oil cooler. the oil return line that comes from the turbo is metal, so i will just cut out a small section of that metal line with a pipe cutter and fit my oil cooler that way. and you mentioned a top mount inter cooler, could some tell me if the top mount inter coolers are better then a front mount inter cooler please. i have already bought a front mount inter cooler that i will have a super easy time installing (when i finally get my lazy rump roast up to go buy the tubing) oh yeah, also forgot to mention, i hooked the car up to a battery today to check and see if the digi-dash lights up, and sure enough it works. another thing i like about this car is the glass moon roof that slides open, definitely will get the attention of my girlfriend on dates, also will be awesome on warm summer nights. also, all the power windows work, but they go slow; i think it might be because i didnt actually have the battery in the car, i just used a battery and jumper cables. but could someone please tell me, is slow moving windows a good indication that i have to replace the motors? or do you thing they might just be sticky since the car has been sitting for 5 years.? -

oh dont worry, i'll be able to get more power from it with out altering it much. im gonna make the exhaust completely straight (no cats cause we dont have laws on that here.) i've got a intercooler for it, and an oil cooler. i will have some pics for ya after i get the car. i just need to get back to the guy this morning but he's not answering his phone yet. and i have already had people tell me over an over about the EJ swaps, and i dont really care for them, i like originality in my cars, thats also why now that i have this GL-10 im going going to do the EA82 turbo swap on my other Subaru. -
freaking sweet, i love it. i just need to do a head gasket. but anyway, now im not going to do the motor swap on my 1987 Subaru GL wagon, just to save myself from a lot of unnecessary labor. long story short, what can i do to make the EA82 turbo motor better, and please people, dont give me a hassle about this motor, i have already heard all cons about this engine, i just want to know how to make it better cause i freaking love these cars. some more info on the car. 1988 Subaru GL-10 wagon EA82 Turbo all wheel drive, 5 speed power everything, including a bad rump roast glass moon roof digital dash (works perfectly, btw) car has 189,000 miles what happened: guy was going down the highway and the car overheated cause the thermostat got stuck. he stopped an immediately shut the car off, then the headgasket blew (out, not in) he had it towed home, started taking it apart, got tired with it, and decided to sell it (got a steal deal on a Volvo he said) damn, think i talked too much. ways to make ea82 better. Please?

thank you, thats what i needed to know. i am already aware of what everone has said about this engine and have already gotten the advice i needed to make this engine good (the way it should have been from the factory.) after tearing the motor apart the only thing i found wrong was a bad head gasket. so i got lucky with this one. plus, the turbo is in perfect condition, i already have the cross member, and have paid for the car im taking the wiring from. what you said is exactly what i wanted to know. what happened was, the junkyard car i got the motor from, someone took the starter out of it and cut a few wires, not wanting to screw with them i was in search of a different vehicle for the wiring. i guess i'll just go ahead and fix the wires that got cut. they arent that hard to fix i just didnt want to screw with em. -
but i think it might be stupid one. will the wiring from a 1989 Subaru car (dont know exact model) work with my EA82T motor im putting in my 1987 Subaru GL wagon? oh, btw, Subaru car is a 1.8 fuel injected.

also, i would like to pop the question about the gas tanks. now, about the picking up air problem. i shouldnt have that problem cause i never let my cars get that low. would probably have to be so low the light turns on. since i got my car the only time i have ever seen the gas light on was when i got it, the guy left it empty for me -.- since that i dont let my fuel get low enough. also, i like the fact that the pump isnt in the tank, makes it ever so easier for me. questions: which fuel pump should i run? or whats the best that anyone recommends. i read on hear about someone who was running 330cc fuel injectors. when i took my car about and saw the whole insides of the exhaust system, it looks like the car runs pretty damn lean stock. should i run bigger fuel injector so my car runs a little richer (not worried about fuel mileage at all btw) and i think thats it. oh, and i appreciate all of you people who are giving me help with this project. your advice is just gonna make this project 100 times better for me.

well, im pretty sure i probably did it WRONG to begin with. all we did was take the timing belt covers off and lined up the timing mark on the cam gear on the right(passenger side) of the motor. then checked the timing mark on the other side and found this. for all i know the whole timing was off cause i havent actually had the motor running. would have ran it at the junk yard if someone hadnt pulled the starter. also, i had absolutely no clue about any timing marks on the flywheel. i have a Haynes manual for this car, i guess i should start using it.

yeah, i had already discussed the oil cooler with my friend whos helping me on this. the oil cooler is a great idea, and im happy to hear someone else who says so. how did you run the lines, might i ask? oh, and hey, i wanted to mention to everyone. i dont know how it happened, but i totally lucked out on this motor. when i went at check it out at the junk yard, we put a socket and breaker bar on the crank to make sure the engine wasnt seized. to me, it seemed like it turned to easily so i thought maybe valves, head gasket, rings, anything that would keep the motor from having compression. when i finally picked up the motor yesterday, the first thing my friend and i did was check the timing. come to find out the timing on the left (drivers side) of the motor was a whole 180 degrees off. when we fixed the timing and put a socket and breaker bar on and turned the crank, it was perfect. you could feel the compression strokes, and also i didnt hear any noises indicating any cylinder leaks. the whole reason this car was at the junk yard, according to the yard guy, was cause the motor didnt run. well, i guess who ever did the timing belt service messed up. oh, and i also took my turbo down to a local turner shop and had it checked out and they told me it was in perfect condition. i was surprised and extremely happy to hear that.

TURBONE! where would i be able to find these 3rd gen heads? ^^^^^^ another question, is it a good idea that im going to put an intercooler on this motor, my friend said it would help with the heat problem. my friend and i are going to look at every aspect of the heat problems that are associated with this motor and take care of them. that other guy said that it would be a bad idea to put a 170 degree thermostat in my car. how would that hurt my motor and mess up my emissions??? i dont understand. i have always used the coolest thermostat i could get in all my cars and never had problems. anyway. so Turbone, can you help me out??? if we could i was wondering if maybe we could sometime get on a chat and you could maybe help me with some other questions.

ok, i guess i will stay away from it then and just stick to my analog cluster. shouldnt be that hard to wire up, should it???
-
so hey, did the Subaru digital dash boards ever have any problems? i was thinking about just taking the one out and putting it in my car. i went on google and check out the dash while its lighted up and i think it looks bad rump roast. but somethings are just straight up worse then they appear. any opinions on digital dash?
-
-
another thing i forgot to ask was for info on the dash. my car has the analog dash with tach, speedometer, and the other 4 things (oil, volts, fuel, engine temp) the car im taking from has the digital dash. will i have to take the digital cluster, or will my regular one work?? someone on here, if i remember right, told me my dash will still work/compatible.

all right. thank you for the help people. im aware of the EJ22 motor swap, but i just like taking ************ty motors and making them better. another question. what causes the heads to crack? is the turbo too much or does the motor get to hot or something? i remember people telling me of engine heat problems. i have already got down everything im going to do to the cooling system to eliminate too much heat problems. also i heard about head gasket problems and i got that figured out too.

like in my before thread, i have bought an EA82T motor, im fully rebuilding it, and need some help. now lets stay on topic this time, the admins closed my last thread. im wondering what all wiring im going to need out of the old car so i can make this engine run. should i get all the wiring from the other car, or do i just need the stuff that runs to the motor and the ECU? the car im getting the motor from had a automatic tranny, does that affect my swap? and is it just me, or do the fuel injected EA82's not have the pump in the tank? some info, My car, 1987 Subaru GL wagon carbed EA82. new motor, 1985 Subaru something wagon EA82T. looks exactly like my car, just different motor.

well, for some reason the guy at the junk yard told me it was a 1993, so they are the ones messed up. i think its a 1985, judging by the big circled "85" on the outside of the car. it doesnt matter anymore anyway, for the EA82T or the EJ22. after i told my grandpa about the the fuel system stuff he said no. since he's one the paying for all or it, well, i guess thats just how it plays out for now. im pissed off about it too. i guess im just gonna be pulling all the a/c stuff since my car doesnt have the a/c lines, and im gonna take the rear disc brakes too for now. edit: oh and hey, if anyone knows of stuff i can do to my original EA82 carb motor better (besides Weber carb swap, im doing that) please let me know. -

yes, i get the everything as far as wiring goes. but now that you told me i dont need all or it, i will only take what i need. for the fuel pump, what all do i need besides the pump?? oh, car is a 1993 Subaru GL-10 -

thank you, thank you, thank you. my grandpa will be glad to hear this. he is the one who payed for my motor for me to do this swap, and he thought i was getting into too much work as far as the wiring goes. but now that you told me i only need the engine wiring stuff and ECU, thats very help full. means i dont have to tear out my whole dashboard. -

see, thats what i was thinking of doing. i helped a friend of mine with a engine swap on his Honda Prelude so i have the whole entire wiring stuff down, and he was gonna help me strip the wiring out and put it in my car, but i would also have to take the instrument panel seeing as the car i want the motor from is a GL-10 with the digital dash. so it would be hella work, but we could do it. also, i kinda want to do this for my end of the year project of the my class at the vocational center. look at me saying crap. anyway, i got a deal on the motor and wiring harness for only 250 dollars, and the motor has only 131,000 miles on it, versus the 200,000 miles my motor has. also, this motor i want to take doesnt have lifters that clack like f'in hell. -
im thinking of taking the whole entire turbo engine and such from a Subaru GL-10 station wagon and putting it in my 1987 Subaru GL wagon. now, i know thats a lot of work and i dont care, here's what i want to know. everything i will need from the old car to make the engine work right in mine, and i need to make sure i dont need any super special tools. also, i was wondering, if i just wanted to maybe take the turbo from the junk Subaru and put it on my motor, would it damage anything on my motor, seeing as its the the non turbo engine??? im afraid the turbo hurting my connecting rods.

Whether its rally or street. anyway. hello, my actual name is Cameron. im a Subaru freak, but at the same time new to Subaru know how and what not. i own a 1987 Subaru GL station wagon with the 1.8 liter carb motor, and im here to get some questions answered for a motor swap im doing with it.
