  1. sounds like when my cam sensor went out. threw a code though. do you have a check engine light on?
  2. oil might be too heavy. you need 5w-30 in those 2.2 all year round. try that. a 5 quart change jug of Valvoline (Subaru's best friend) is only 15 bucks at any local Wal-Mart
  3. no. the rod journals are bigger in diameter with bigger bearings than my 96 ej25 short block. tripped me out to the point where I made a thread about it and I was told its cause its a phase 2 ej25. also the fact that the thrust bearing is #5
  4. For sure. The floor mats are definitely a must. we dont have much for weather here in Kennewick, so i have a really nice set of floor mats i custom cut out of some carpet i had left over from a flooring job. You can see them in my pics in that link i gave you. Winter is about the dirtiest time around here for the outside of the car, as where summer is the dirtiest inside the the car. lol. I can keep my car clean all summer long with window cleaner and a rag, but i always give my car a good old fashioned waxing; the rub on kind too, not that wimpy wash on wash off stuff. Lol. but when i do have to do a major cleaning (say after some rain, or a few gravel roads xD) i use a soap with wax in it. my paint beads water all year round. Very helpful to keep your paint from being stained.
  5. Nice. If you think you'll have plans for this thing down the road you should post all your pics in the Members' Rides section. But damn thats clean.
  6. Wow. thats clean. My car wasnt that clean when i got it. see for yourself http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/131224-1996-subaru-legacy-station-wagontons-of-pics/ shes worth way more than i have into her now.
  7. Ok. I dont wanna steer this too far out of proportion (like its actually going somewhere with only 2 others contributing xD) but i need to ask a serious question; or more or less ask: Whats the deal on the Phase 2 ej25? I have a phase 2 short block that i tore apart and i like the idea of the bigger rods, but that doesnt necessarily mean they are stronger. So, what of em? if they are stronger i was questioning building a turbo ej25 using the phase 2 block with the 96 low comp heads and a really good head gasket. Would that be as reliable as going the 2.2 route? Can i put the bigger crank and rods from the 2.5 in the 2.2 block???
  8. Dude! Freaking sick you lucky mofo. Keep up the awesome improvements!
  9. Thats impeccable! My car was like that. Different story though. And why are you concerned with the head gaskets? 2.2s do not have that problem. My car is like yours, i have a full record of all the work ever done to that car, till the day i bought it, was done at the dealer. Now it has 225000 miles on it. never needed head gaskets. thats a 2.5 issue. I'd say you've found yourself a gem, just not a back yard gem like i did. lol. Savior it. She will run longer than you maybe? haha xD Love Subaru Oh yeah. and you need to get the correct gas cap to work with the EVAP system on your car or it will throw a code.
  10. Alright, its all done. it looks super awesome. Sooo, how does it look?
  11. I've got a septic tank so...... haha xD. I never flush the stuff. kewl to hear you can wash it out in the grass though
  12. more updates!!! progress on the hood today. got all the imperfections taken care of. then i primed, painted, and cleared the underside of the hood, and today (cause its 1:17 am my time) i will do the top. that way the bottom will be cured. i can throw a blanket on my sawhorses and flip it. All i have to say is: Dayum! So it begins...... sorry, missing pics inbetween. but, here's the base coat after priming and, Bam! clear coat I cant even sleep tonight. i keep going and checking my heater in the shop making sure its staying 70 degrees in there. lol. i'm almost pretty sure i'll pull an all nighter so i can paint my hood around 8 am.
  13. well, i figure it might be time for an update. i dont have any pics of it but about a month and a half ago the trim came loose on the passenger door and wiped out the fender. Got it fixed though. On a cool note i got a hood scoop hood for 40 bucks. it had some minor damages but i've already test fitted it. just need a little Body Ice and some cleaning the hood is ready for paint. And my original hood gets to chill in my room for the night. lol
  14. holy crap! thanks for pointing me in the right direction. 25 minutes later and no nore intermittent speedometer. excellent write up
  15. hey cool. thanks. blasted thing started working again but I doubt its gonna last.
  16. the rest of gauges work but the speedometer doesn't and its not counting miles. I did some searching and jave found out cars from this era have issues with the speedometer frying, and also some of the lights are out so I'm gonna replace the cluster anyway. I only had one person say the speedometer gear. what do you guys think it is?
  17. Alright. So there's a big ground wire that runs to the starter that we found wasnt hooked up like its supposed to be. It just dangled down and we didnt notice it while reinstalling the starter. We hooked it up and still cranks but wont start. We have fuel; pulled a plug and its got gas on it, but it was wet like its flooding. We dried out 3 of them and it still doesnt want to start. it doesnt even act like its trying to catch. Eliminated the MAF to see what would happen. no difference. maybe i fried the ECU by trying to start it without that big ground?
  18. i knew i was forgetting to mention something. we triple checked the timing before dropping the engine in and everything lines up perfect. And the compression would be a little low cause we havent gotten to drive it and seat the new rings. And the heads are perfect. we took em to a machine shop and had them professionally reconditioned. Did the gas test on the valves; doesnt leak a bit. Also, we eliminated the cam and crank sensors as being a problem by replacing them with ones out of our 1996 Outback that actually runs. and also the sensors that were in our non running engine work cause we put them in the other 96 to see if it would run on them and it does. Ive gone over it twice now. No missing grounds, no broken wires, no disconnected connectors. everything is as it should be. I just dont understand.
  19. Just as the title as. 1999 Outback wagon. At some point in time the car received a 96 2.5 swapped in(original engine probably kicked the bucket). We bought it for 500 bucks with a bad rod bearing. We rebuilt the engine, which ran with the bad rod bearing, but now after rebuilding it, it wont start. Everything is good so we dont understand why it wont start. We have fuel, spark, only checked number 1 cylinder but 110 compression, no vacuum leaks or disconnected lines, MAF is intact and clean, No codes, 40psi fuel pressure while cranking. Here's some things i noted. Pulled a wire and did a spark test. what should the spark look like? ours was kinda orangish. used a timing light and found its sparking at 10 degrees BTDC, and the damn thing appears to be flooding. Also, we pulled 3 of the plugs out and heated em real good with a torch and reinstalled them, and using a little bit of starting fluid, it still wouldnt fire. whats going on? i'm loosing it with this car. OH, and it wouldnt build any fuel pressure when we first got so its now got a new fuel pump. And its tried to fire up a twice, but immediately sputters and dies.
  20. hopefully someone else will jump on that for ya since I don't know. but if either of them was bad it would throw a code
  21. is it cranking over slow at all? doesn't sound like it but thought I'd ask. if its taking a while of cranking for the engine to fire its typically the crank or cam sensor. the cam sensor was going out on my car. knew it cause it threw a code. sometimes it would start normally, sometimes it would crank for a while before firing up. it finally went out for good, luckily at the junk yard so I just grabbed another one, put it on, and she fired right up and away I went. still works too 15000 miles later
  22. you should post this where I posted my turbo build questions in the turbo tech forum. I actually got help fast there. this area is for posting issue related questions.
  23. are all 2.5 exhaust headers the same? I'm trying to find a header and up-pipe which all seem to be the same for 2.0 and 2.5, but does year make a difference?
