I need to replace the electrical part of the ignition switch. Right now I can't start the car with the ignition. I insert the key and turn it to on, and then use a push button that the previous owner installed, to start the car. I need to replace the switch because it is effecting other things, like my cruise doesn't work and the tranny computer isn't getting all the right signals. Tranny was completely rebuilt, but the tech said things are not working quite right and won't work right til ignition is fixed.

Parking pall

After driving the car today (my fiance' has had it) I discovered that the tanny is a MB3, not the 4EAT originally suggested. The parking pawl does engage as long as the key is on. As soon as the key is turned off it disengages. I have another thread on this forum about my ignition problems. -

How is that any different from stopping the wheels on one side from turning with a 2x4? -
This is the 3rd thread I have started. I want to start by saying thanks to all who gave advice and continue to give advice on the other threads. Now, on to the task. I recently bought a 05 Impreza RS (auto tran). The previous owner had the ignition switch go bad on him and had done the "wire in a button to activate the starter" trick. Now, when the ignition switch failed, he got a check engine light (that is still on), and he lost cruise control. Everything else seems to work ok as far as I can tell. I like to have things to be working correctly and I really like cruise, so I'm going to have to fix it. Any advice on how to go about it? Is this just a switch issue, or is there more to it? Thanks in advance for the help.

Wow nipper! Great idea! One question. Could I do that test by just jacking up one side of the car? -

so, in reguards to the second part of my question, is there any way that its somehow tied to the ignition switch? -

Yes it is definitely going back, but one question, if the parking pall is not activated electronically, then why should I check the electrical plugs? -
I have 05 Impreza RS. The transmission was recently rebuilt and now the parking pall won't engage when you put it in park. The tranny guy said it was because the ignition is messed up. (I have to start it with a button installed as a temp fix.) So the question is, does the parking pall get engaged electronically and does the ignition have anything to do with it?

Interesting thoughts guys. The car has 84k on it. the front diff was rebuilt at the same tie as the tranny, and the rear diff fluid was changed at the same time. milesfox, you're idea of a possible earlier tranny or diff change is very interesting. I will have that checked out. a new development; I'm still getting the lurching or what some call a shudder, in tight turning. Its still binding up. In other words the same reason that the tranny was rebuild and supposed to fix. Another reason why I think Milesfox may be on to something, because it took several hundred miles for it to start binding up again. Also the parking pall won't engage when its put in park. ( I know, some rebuild huh!) I've been told that it is operated electronically. does anyone know if this is true? -

The tires are a brand new matched set of michelin X-ice Xi2's. I have read about the wheel bearing issue on this forum, and I dont think its that, because it changes from acceleration to deceleration and from cold to warm operating temp. But I could be wrong. Any other thoughts? -
Hey all, I'm new to posting on the forum, but have been a reader for a while and found there to be an amazing amount of info here. I just bought a 05 impreza RS, auto tranny, at a really good price knowing that there was a need to have a bit of work done. It seem that the middle diff was going to need to be rebuilt. It was a gamble, and in this case it was a bad one. I put these new michelin snow tire on it that everyone is raving and of course the binding in the middle diff got worse, but it also developed a howl especially on deceleration. I took it to a very reputable tranny guy tat i have used before, and he told me the front diff needed a new ring and pinion as well as a complete rebuild on the tranny, So after a complete rebuild of front diff and tranny, and a fluid change on the rear diff, I still have a howl. The mechanic couldn't figure it out. Could it be those tires? any ideas?
