Shaving the block results in a greater overall volume change than decking the heads. Looking at my photos of my HC ea81 build, it looks like you could get away with .020 off the block. i can post some high-res pics if you want. Just let me know. With the block shaved AND heads decked though you are probably getting dangerously close when it comes to piston/valve interference. Would probably be a good runner if you didnt have interference problems. Just so long as you figure out the correct valve train geometry. I know mine is a bit noisy. It is slowly working in, but still noisier than I had hoped it would be. Mine is all hydro.

The switch controls the relay. The relay controls the flow of electricity between the power source and the load. So yes, a "middle man"
-
Always use a relay, and always use a "switched" power source for the switch. You do not want the switch to have power when the ignition is off. I normally wire my switch to the running lights. That way the off road lamps canot be on unless the running lights are on. I always wire as such:

That should be a bit brighter than stock great build!

Says who? The Felpro Permatorque headgaskets are a proven gasket. Im sure Victor makes a great gasket but to claim it is BETTER would imply that the Felpro have failure problems, in which they do not. Have you EVER seen a felpro permatorque gasket failure on a EA81?
-
If that is the case then you have either the incorrect pressure plate, TOB, clutch fork, or a combination of the three.
-
Dont bother. Go with Felpro perma-torque gaskets.

Yes, motor is pointed the wrong way. But this vintage Rav uses the same type of AWD system that most Subarus do. A viscous coupled center diff controls power distribution front to rear. Only hang-up is the non- "symmetrical" front axle lengths due to the transfersely mounted engine and trans. So loss of traction in severe cases it due primarily to torque steer. Fun little rig though.

My GL is officially the garage queen! I ran across a low mileage '05 Rav I couldnt say no to. So it will be the wifes DD and our road trip rig. I finished up with giving the Rav a base-line service just so I know things are up to speed. Pretty clean little thing. I think its even SMALLER that the GL Ill have to do a photo-shoot and comparo with these two little 4wds. They are VERY similar in more ways than you could imagine... Silly little japanese rigs!

Hey Twitch, The heads were shaved .015 So far it LOVES the larger exhaust. Opening it up really helped this ea81 rev. Ill let you know if Im headed that way in the GL! It would be great to meet up!

Have a question about the Crosstrek? Ask an owner!
Idasho replied to subeman90's topic in Crosstrek "XV"
I was planning on picking up an XV in the next year or two.... until an '05 Rav landed in my lap. Simply a deal I couldnt pass up. The XV looks to be a fantastic rig. Great looks, great features, great MPG, and its a SUBARU. One question for ya.... Are you satisfied with the power it has? -
We REALLY need to get you an EA81 rig... I really want one of these for my HC EA81!
-
Yeah, those are never intended as recovery points. To get the most solid recovery points on the rear, it will need to be tied into the bumper mounts.

I dont have enough problematic old vehicles so...

They are never ALL fixed. -
Anyone want to get a FREE VIN check?
Idasho replied to Idasho's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
your not following the directions if you got 421000 results. You need to narrow it down by selection last 24hrs And FYI, I just used it this evening. Still working. Though I will say that WEEKENDS do seem to be troublesome, as there simply are not as many dealers requesting auto-checks on the weekend. If you cannot find a hit on the weekend, try it mid-day monday or afternoon. bottom line, it still works. -
Bad fuel economy with weber?
Idasho replied to Kevint143's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Weber has a very simple tuning guide that will tell you if you need different jets. It isnt as simple as slapping on a kit that is supposed to be perfect for your application. Even weber states this. Lots of variables dictate your particular tune, thats why each and every car with the "same" weber is running with a slightly different tune, Heck, just a few thousand feet elevation difference can be enough to warrant different jets. A quick google search found this weber guide. http://www.classicinlines.com/WeberTune.asp -
Bad fuel economy with weber?
Idasho replied to Kevint143's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Key to the weber is the tune. That includes possibly having to switch jets. -
It is more or less a direct swap. Only real change is shift linkage and where it mounts. All stuff you will have to address as it happens. No problem doing it with the engine in. First things first though, looking at that bellhousing you need to determine FOR SURE if that is gear oil or engine oil. If it is gear oil you have some work to do before you even touch the car.

More info here... http://www.flowkoolerwaterpumps.com/info/common_waterpump_failures.html Bottom line, nothing is perfect. And items that utilize rotary seals almost always require time to "mate" with the surface it seals against in order to provide the best seal possible.

Im not talking about debris that came in the pump. Im talking about debris that is always pumping through the coolant system. Also, the bearings are sealed. A small weep early in the life of a water pump is not going to harm the bearings.
-
is it constantly leaking? I have had more than a couple brand new pumps weep a bit soon after install, only to quit leaking when given the chance. I attribute it to debris in the coolant system , stuck between the seal and the shaft within the pump. The reman pump on my low mileage high compression ea81 is one such case. It started weeping 4-500 miles after install. It was weeping enough to dribble down the the oil pan. It did this for a week or so. I watched it carefully, then ordered up a brand new pump. When the new pump came in I pulled it into the shop for replacement, only to find the leak had quit. So I put the brand new pump on the shelf, and kept driving with the old pump. Hasnt leaked since.... about 3k miles on it now.

Aftermarket Accelerator cable problems?
Idasho replied to Señor Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
dealer couldnt get one for mine. It has one of the various forms of cruise control on it, that uses 3 cables. One from the throttle pedal to a junction box. One from the cruise control gizmo to the junction box, and one from the junction box to the carb. So I built my own, using new motorcycle brake cables, sheaths, and ends. The cable is slightly larger diameter than OEM, but uses MANY more strands of wire, and the sheaths are much higher quality, lined with nylon. -
I just made the push to a fully synthetic 5w40 Rotella for my HC EA81 Damn good oil.
