Is there any other way? - Heater Core clogged

i was hoping to be able to cut it out with a dremel but looking at my 1988 GL that looks impossible. -
Is there any other way? - Heater Core clogged

can this be done on a 1988 subaru GL? I've seen some pictures where you see the heater lines under the dash but when i look under my dash i can't find them and it looks a little bit different. Perhaps it is only possible on an ea81? I've flushed my heater core a few times and i've used drano twice but it still isn't as hot as i need it to be. I'd love to put a new core in there but i dont want to remove the dash. I'm hoping i can cut my old one out. Thanks -
wow this is very cool. Yeah it would only be for deep snow. I'm moving to wyoming and i've heard the winters can be quite crazy there. I believe a legacy automatic with good appropriate tires would be more than enough to get me around in the winter time, however i really like the idea of being able to flip a switch and "lock" the diff. I'd probably not use it much but if i ever did get into some deep powder and was having trouble getting out, very cool mod to be able to lock it and get myself moving again.

is this the case? This sounds like a very cool modification for anyone with an automatic. I am looking for an auto and dislike the 90/10 split. I love the 4wd system on my GL and when it is locked, it is amazing in the snow. So with the newer outback legacys that have the automatic transmission, can you engage and on the switch allowing the differential to give a more 50/50 split of the power? Thanks

Hi guys i'm looking at purchasing a legacy to upgrade from my 88 GL. Now i know that the ej25 is plagued with head gasket problems, my question is when did they fix that>? I'm looking at a 2002 legacy with 127k miles. WOuld you think they have already had the head gaskets replaced if it is at 127k? i figure if it was a problem it would have been replaced already. Or does the ej25 from 2002 not have that problem? Anything else i should look at besides headgaskets and timing belts? I'm looking for an automatic too. Thanks guys

Is that a GL i spy with a hood scoop? Who's car is that down from your car Kingbobdole? any plans for your car? Looks pretty sweet, would be even sweeter with a paintjob and some ea81 spoked wheels -
1988 Subaru Gl 10 Price
r81gsr95 replied to scoobywagon45's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
DOH! i thought you were looking at that GL10, not that it was yours and you were trying to sell it. lol i'm a tool for not reading correctly. Yeah if you only that many miles on your engine that's pretty good. I would clean it up and see what you could get for it. Then look for a nice clean GL. These cars are worth their weight in gold, worth so much more than what you have to pay for one. Find a clean one for a thousand or two, go through junkyards looking for newer parts and restore them bit by bit. After not too long you will have a nice clean classic that will go and go and go -
Finally got a new exhaust
r81gsr95 replied to Stubies Subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so the 2.25 exhaust really gave you some increased performance? What is the stock exhaust size? 2 inch?> Thanks -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MagnaFlow-49-State-Converter-23869-Direct-Fit-Catalytic-Converter-DL-GL-STANDARD-/140923684522?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1988%7CMake%3ASubaru&hash=item20cfb4c6aa&vxp=mtr Is this the best option in replacing my Y pipe for my 1988 subaru GL ea82? I'm looking to put a new exhaust on the GL. I'm thinking i will take it to Midas or an exhaust shop that offers a lifetime warranty and have them put a whole new exhaust on it. I plan on keeping the car for a long time so i figure the lifetime warranty will be nice, with all the snow i drive my car in the exhaust tends to rust out. This Y pipe would be nice to install though, then take it to the shop and have them put a midpipe and muffler on it. Is this my best option? Would i be better of just taking it to midas and having them do the Y pipe as well? How would you guys go about replacing your exhaust? Not looking to spend too much. Idk if it would be cheaper to get a custom Y pipe made or buy this maganaflow one. I sure would like a nice quiet exhaust though. The quieter the better ! How much to get a whole new exhaust at a shop? any estimates? Thanks

1988 Subaru Gl 10 Price
r81gsr95 replied to scoobywagon45's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i wouldn't buy that. It's an automatic! Horrible gas mileage, no power, gutless. Someone messed up the paint job, stickers all over the place, the windows are tinted. That ea82T engine is so unreliable. Find something like this. a clean 5 speed ea82 GL or Loyale. No turbo. These motors go forever unlike the turbo versions. Find something like that for 2 grand. Something well taken care of, a car that someone actually cared about and really looked after. It will last so much longer than a car someone just used and didn't treat well. Best of luck! -

wow! that 360k.. details? so the stock engine made it to 355k and then it had to be rebuilt? pretty impressive. How long did the stock clutch last? Did anything go out between say 250k -350k that needed to be replaced? Just wondering what might be next to go on my car. Thanks -

this is how i want my subaru to look. Classic and clean! I love the wheels, i need to get mine painted and done up like that. The next move on my subaru though is retrofit headlamps still deciding on what projector to use but i really love the acura TSX projectors. They are cheap and their cutoff is very sexy. Another option is bmw e46 m3 projectors. These are dirt cheap, like 80 dollars for a pair but their cutoff is barely there. I plan to go to the junk yard and pick up a set of loyale headlights. I'll open them up and mount the projectors, then mount the ballasts and wire them up to my stock headlamps. I plan to make the headlights look as stock as possible. can't wait to have them light up the road like the newer subarus. -

I really would like to tint the windows in my subaru but not too sure how it would turn out. Nice to see some other loyales with tint so i can get an idea. The picture i just posted of my subi makes it look as if the rear windows are tinted. It looks pretty good i think but i doubt i'll get mine tinted. It just always seems to turn out bad on classic cars. I like your color combo though -

holy spoob there are some nice subarus in here! -
my GL was doing that. The fuel pump ended up going out not too long after and i replaced it with a universal pump that i bought off ebay. The pump was like 40 or 50 dollars. The car sure runs great now with the new pump. Easy as pie to replace as well, didn't even have to jack the car up.

subaru GL ea82 in high altitude
r81gsr95 replied to r81gsr95's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I see that some exhaust options and a delta low torque cam could give me some more power? would i want a low end cam or a top end one? -
subaru GL ea82 in high altitude
r81gsr95 replied to r81gsr95's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The engine is running great. It has good compression, clutch is still strong. The body is beautiful and it's really a great car. I have replaced the axles and wheel bearings. I will have some money to spend on it and feel like a new engine would push this car for another 300k. I want the assurance a new engine would give, especially in some Wyoming winters. The extra power would be nice. A new engine with a new exhaust, it would be like a new car again! So if I swapped out my fuel injection for a Webber carb I could actually see some power gains? Any extra power wound be great! Maybe that is just If my engine has a carburetor already? I wish I could put an engine that had a little bit more power, especially since ill lose power due to the altitude.. I don't want the wiring hassle though and the shop I will go to charges a lot lot more to swap an EJ than an ea82. I wish I could find someone to do the full swap for 2grand but it seems a remanufactured ea82 swap is cheaper. Brand new engine, new exhaust, new clutch, gotta have a bit more power than my old 250k ea82 I have now. Can't go wrong right guys? I plan to have some friends that will be studying at my school. It will be their first time in the country and wanted to be able to drive them to Denver and other surrounding areas. I need reliability first, but power there too. Enough to go camping, road tripping, and snowboarding. My ea82 is enough right now, but I'm at sea level.. thanks everyone -
Hey guys i was wondering if anyone here lives in colorado or wyoming? I'm from Washington but am moving to wyoming for school and am wondering how my subaru GL will do in the high altitude? Right now i would say the car barely has enough power, she is at 250k miles but is running really strong. It has enough power to run me around , with 2 people in the car it can get a little big sluggish. I plan to put a remanufactured ea82 in it so i'm thinking a brand new engine should have a few more horses than what i have now. I'm wondering though, if i move to wyoming, and the car barely has enough power as is sits now, will it be completely gutless 7,000 feet up in the air? If anyone lives in colorado or wyoming and they have an ea82 or ea81, if they could tell me how the car is that would great! i'm either going to sell it and buy a newer subaru. Or i'm going to put a new ea82 in my GL and enjoy the newness of a new engine, and drive her for another 250k. Do you guys think this car would have plenty of power with a new engine, even in the high altitude? I guess that's my major question. Thanks again

the wheels need to be drilled, or your hubs need to be drilled.
