  1. 1985 GL pulling out of a parking lot I lost all my gears in front wheel drive. It sounds like they are stripping out when I let out the clutch in any of the gears. When I put the selector in 4WD lo I have all gears and all is fine. what happened and what is the fix? thanks Dirk
  2. Fan works now. After removal of fan and disassembly of the motor to remove debris. After reinstall of dash (I took almost everything apart) I had to remove the Off button on the heater control because it was not realizing the complete movement and want not turning off. All works now.
  3. ok thanks that explains some things. I have the EA82 in that case with the overhead cam, plastic covers and distributor on the driver's side.
  4. How do I determine which series I have EA81 or EA82?
  5. Thanks for the info. I may do that with the vin. I certainly never considered auto zone an authority on subarus.
  6. Thanks for the replies it has a Nippon coil, not sure about the distributor. The engine family is FFJ1.8T2HCPO I have been to two parts houses, Napa and Auto Zone and I encountered the same problem in both places. At Auto Zone (and I know some of you are cringing when I mention a discount auto parts store) the ask for the VIN and whether it is a 4 or 5 and mine is a 5. I am assuming this is 4 wheel drive because you can put it into 4 wheel drive, and I am assuming the FWD on the selector means Front Wheel Drive rather than Four Wheel Drive which is designated on the selector as 4wheel drive HI and 4 wheel drive LO. And the original owners packet says 4WD.
  7. Ok I finally found it. thanks. I removed the fan and motor which has a small rubber hose running into the motor which I assume is for cooling. Mice had gotten into the duct work and I could feel inside the fan housing up to the heat exchanger which had mouse nesting material covering it. That same nesting material had gotten sucked into the rubber vent hose to the motor and there were bits of it around the brushes. The fan will turn but I don't know if it is still good. Could not get anything out of it trying to put it to a battery. How do I tell if it is fried resisters? the fan did not work in any number position.
  8. When I go to the parts store to order a new distributor cap, and give them the car specs, they come up with the wrong cap. The correct cap they have listed for a 2 wheel drive but I have a 1985 Subaru GL 1800 non-turbo, 4 wheel drive. Could the distributor have been replaced at one point? thanks Dirk
  9. Hi, just found this forum. I have a 1985 soob GL with a 1800 non-turbo 4 wheel drive. I am trying to get to the blower for the heater but can not find/get to it. The manual I have says to remove the radio console, but that seems to be the whole dash. I have removed the panel around the shifter and 4wd selector. also the heater control panel. Where do i go from here? thanks Dirk
